hits and myths

Let's debunk a football myth a week.

First: The pro overtime system favors the team winning the coin toss.

Wrong.

Since the sudden-win system was put in place, the
actual results are about 50-50.

Some seasons, the team kicking off in overtime has won more than 50 percent of the time.

One thing skewing the results is the fact that the team receiving the overtime kickoff occasionally wins the game after several punts!

The concept that the team that gets the ball first scores with that possession more than half the time is baloney.

The pro system is a hundred times better than the rinky-dink college playoff that looks like junior high school.

Good pro teams kick off, play D, get the ball back, win the game.

Chump teams dislike the pro system.

Good pro teams kick off, play D get the ball back, win the game. Or good pro teams recive the ball, kick a fieldgoal and win the game. How can you say that is not rinky-dink. Compaired to both teams having a fair chance like the college playoff system. I guess it depends on how you look it if your a chump or not. For myself a good college game beats a pro game all to hell. GO SOONERS

Junior High? Wrong. Way too generous.

David: You're right. The college playoff is more like a video game than anything real.

Out Pick The Picker

The Picker began entertaining – and infuriating – sports fans in 1993. Each week during football season, he writes about his picks of college and NFL games in his Thursday Sports column. He's never afraid of sharing his opinions about the game and the personalities who play it. Readers have a chance to go against him each season in the Outpick the Picker contest. He welcomes the competition.
