Verizon Wireless, the nation's second largest cellular phone company, is building an $18 million 50,000-square-foot network operations center in east Tulsa, company officials said Friday.

Construction on the network operations center is expected to be completed early in 2009. The facility will employ 20 people, said Verizon Wireless spokeswoman Audrey Lundy.

"The network operations center will strengthen the reliability and boost capacity for wireless callers and data users across the Oklahoma-Arkansas region," Lundy said in a telephone interview. "The center will handle all wireless traffic within the area."

The Verizon Wireless facility is being built at 12223 E. State Farm Boulevard, which is just north of the intersection of 51st Street and 129th East Avenue.
