Chrysler Group, the Detroit-based automaker now being run by Fiat SpA, will sell four models of the Italian carmaker's 500 subcompact in the U.S., CEO Sergio Marchionne says.

Chrysler, which emerged from bankruptcy June 10, will eventually sell a convertible, wagon and sporty version called the "Abarth" in addition to the four-seat subcompact, Marchionne said.

While the base 500 will go on sale next year, he didn't say when the other models will be available.

"All of those cars will be coming to the U.S.," Marchionne said. "Fiat will be known in the U.S. purely in terms of its 500 car."

Turin-based Fiat owns 20 percent of Chrysler Group and is sharing vehicles and technology with the U.S. car company.

In Europe, the Fiat small car can be equipped with a 1.2- liter or 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine or a 1.3-liter turbo diesel. The 1.4-liter engine variant gets a combined city- highway average of 36 miles per gallon under European regulatory standards.

I don't know what the Fiat 500 looks like, but the 2 Fiat 850 Spyders I owned were sporty, sexy, and fun to drive. I hope I can say the same for the Chrysler Fiat 500.
