Oklahoma rig count rises by one to 78

The number of drilling rigs actively exploring for oil or gas in Oklahoma edged up by one this week to 78, Baker Hughes Inc. reported Friday.

The state's rig count is 60 percent below the year-ago level of 195.

Nationwide, the net number of active drilling units rose by nine this week to 1,078, said Houston-based Baker Hughes. A year ago, the national total was 1,992.

Of the rigs running this week, 734 were exploring for natural gas and 332 for oil, the report said, while 12 were listed as miscellaneous.

Of the other major oil- and gas-producing states, Louisiana's net rig total rose by five this week, New Mexico gained three rigs, Arkansas and California each gained two, and Colorado gained one.

Texas lost four rigs, while North Dakota's tally fell by one.

Baker Hughes, an oil-field services company and toolmaker, has tracked rig counts since 1944.

Manufacturers plan symposium next week

Companies sticking together through tough economic times will be the theme of a symposium next week for manufacturers.

The Tulsa Economic Development Council and the Oklahoma Manufacturing Alliance are putting together the event, set to begin at 8:30 a.m. Thursday at the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame downtown.

Advanced Metal Recycling partner Todd Ray said the goal of the gathering is to bring manufacturers together and learn more about "green funding," company culture and getting federal stimulus money for local companies.

Mike Seney, senior vice president of the State Chamber of Oklahoma, is among the scheduled speakers, as well as Brad Frank, president of Tulsa Tube Bending.

A tour of the Advanced Metal Recycling facility also is planned.

More information about the event is available from Valerie Adams at (918) 592-5050 or vadams@advancedmetalrecycling.com.
