ConocoPhillips CEO says replacing oil lengthy process
LONG TERM
Jim Mulva:
Climate change can't be ignored.

It may take a century for the nation to replace fossil fuels with alternative energy sources, according to the CEO of ConocoPhillips, the nation's third-largest oil company.
The country will need to develop its own oil and natural gas deposits and continue importing petroleum while developing alternative supplies in the decades ahead, Jim Mulva said Tuesday at the National Summit economic conference in Detroit.
At the same time, he added, the nation must address climate change.
The U.S. needs policies that encourage investments in all types of energy and avoids hurting the economy by making the nation less competitive than countries with cheaper energy, Mulva said.
Proposed climate legislation in Congress threatens to drive U.S. refiners out of business by imposing higher carbon costs on domestic fuel than on imports, he said.
"Government action is needed on energy and climate policy, and some form of legislation seems likely to pass," Mulva said. "We hope that it is realistically based on the hard energy facts I've mentioned and not on politically popular hot air."

Whaaat!? We can't do this now by just putting solar panels on every roof and a windmill in every backyard?

It will take a century to replace the fossil fuels if the oil companies are allowed to position themselves as the energy masters as they are now.
Anything big oil does will be for the purpose of maintaining its dominance with people and the environment secondary or lower in priority..

You can apply that statement to any industry in America. Big does not equal bad. I bet you don't shop at Wal-mart either though...

I think we need more Wind Power in the nation. I think we need to go crazy building wind farms. I also think that Electric vehicles will one day replace gas vehicles.
