Anadarko Petroleum Corp. said Wednesday it has made its third deepwater discovery in the Gulf of Mexico this year.

A well drilled in waters 3,400 feet deep at the Samurai prospect, about 12 miles north of Anadarko's Marco Polo platform, found 120 feet of oil-bearing sand, the Houston-based company said in a statement. Anadarko operates the block that includes Samurai and shares ownership equally with Samson Offshore Co. — a unit of Tulsa-based Samson Investment Co. — and Murphy Oil Corp. of El Dorado, Ark.

Anadarko CEO Jim Hackett raised his estimate last month for 2009 discoveries by 50 percent to 350 million barrels of oil equivalent after exploration successes in the Gulf of Mexico and off the coast of Ghana.

Samurai is among 12 "high- impact" deepwater wells planned this year, the company has said.

A Samurai appraisal well will be drilled within the next year, Anadarko said.
