Microsoft Corp. announced Wednesday that Chief Financial Officer Chris Liddell will resign after 4 1/2 years to seek a new position that broadens his career.

Liddell, 51, will leave at the end of the year.

He will be replaced by Peter Klein, who has served as finance chief of the company's business and server units, the company's two biggest businesses by sales last quarter.

Liddell, a New Zealand native, joined Microsoft in 2005 and was the first outsider to be named finance chief in more than two decades.

He was previously CFO at International Paper Co. and had been CEO at Carter Holt Harvey Ltd., then New Zealand's second-largest public company.
