A handful of stores will open Thursday

You can add this to your Thanksgiving Day activities: shopping.
While most retailers close for the holiday, a select few welcome shoppers who are eager to get a jump on the Black Friday rush or just get out of the house for a while.
Mark Hughes, manager of Garden Ridge at 11015 E. 51st St., said his store has been open on Thanksgiving for at least the last 10 years, and for good reason.
"It's usually wall-to-wall customers that day," he said. "There's a line of people when we open at 8 a.m."
Hughes said Thanksgiving customers are usually going after the specials that are only good for that day. The store will be open until midnight.
Other retailers also are not waiting for Black Friday to begin their sales bonanza.
Discount retailers Big Lots!, Dollar General and Family Dollar are all open Thursday, offering specials on everything from food items to kitchen gadgets, cookware, electronics and toys.
Family Dollar stores are open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and Big Lots! stores are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. with advertised specials such as $5 video games, a $69 Hoover vacuum and deals on appliances and linens.
Dollar General locations are having an 11-hour sale from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. with specials including $25 digital cameras, $20 DVD players, two for $10 DVDs and $1 holiday lights.
At Kmart, the atmosphere on Thanksgiving morning is similar to Black Friday: shoppers lined up before opening, excited to be one of the first inside to snag a hot deal on the perfect Christmas gift, said Sheryl Johnston, manager of the Kmart at 51st Street and Harvard Avenue.
"Things are busy — very busy," she said.
Usually items such as electronics or featured gifts in the flier are the most popular targets for Thanksgiving buyers, Johnston said.
Despite the heavy Thanksgiving traffic, Black Friday itself is even bigger, she said.
"Friday's an even bigger day," Johnston said. "It's about three regular days combined together."

I think retailers should be close today to let their employees spend the holiday with their families. All they after is the extra buck which they will get on Black Friday with people being so greedy about bargains.

All of the above named stores specialize in cheap Chinese merchandise.

K-Mart wasn't built on those principles. It was built on the principle of family values. There was no such thing as open on holidays. When Mr. Kresge passed away all that changed.
.
With K-mart and Sears merging, why is K-mart open when Sears employees get the day off?

I guess this has turned into a annual tradition. For me I prefer to wait and take my time.

That's nice, you all have fun. I'll be lounging in front of the tube.
