Shoppers get out early to nab stores' best deals

Kayden Dayre and his team came prepared for Black Friday. Armed with a Thermos of hot cocoa, a mini charcoal grill and even a tent, he was ready to brave the sub-40-degree temperatures in exchange for a hot deal.

Dayre, a 19-year-old from Sapulpa, was one of thousands of people who lined up at various retailers across the Tulsa area, hoping to get his hands on heavily discounted video games, electronics and various other items.

He arrived at Best Buy at about 2 p.m. Thanksgiving Day.

"We didn't have Thanksgiving dinner, but we had people bringing us food," he said.

Shoppers turned out in force, starting at midnight, to brave crowded shopping centers. In one of the worst economic periods in generations, retailers were slashing prices on many popular items, such as flat-panel televisions and laptop computers, in hopes of pulling in extra revenue.

Stores call the shopping holiday Black Friday because it's the day that many finally turn a profit for the year.

Only one of Dayre's friends was after a high-demand item. Cody Nunnely hoped to pick up a $100 Garmin GPS. Some friends just tagged along for fun and company.

Toys R Us opened the doors at both of its Tulsa locations at midnight. Just minutes before the opening of the chain's store at 71st Street and Memorial Drive, more than 1,000 people had gathered to form a line that stretched hundreds of yards past the door.

Melissa Wood of Broken Arrow came with her daughter Jessica, 20, to pick up toys and electronics for their family.

"Definitely for the MP3 player," Jessica Wood said, holding up a ticket that guaranteed her one of the few $20 portable music devices.

The Wood women arrived at the store at 8 p.m. Thursday and had about 40 people in front of them. Melissa Wood also hoped to pick up a few toys for her children.

Others behind Wood weren't so lucky. Tulsa Police officers were forced to conduct some active crowd control at Toys R Us, with officers urging frenzied shoppers to be patient or look elsewhere for items.

To avoid dangerous crowds and stampedes this year, Wal-Mart encouraged early-arriving shoppers to wait next to individual items in advance of being able to purchase the chain's doorbuster specials at 5 a.m.

Mitchell Sullivan, his wife and nephew staked out a spot at the Sears store in midtown Tulsa at 4 p.m. Thursday, hoping to purchase one of nine front-loading washer and dryer sets selling for $479.

"I've never done anything like this," Sullivan said.

After the washer and dryer, he said, he was done with shopping for the day.

At the nearby Target store in midtown, 18-year-old Vincent Arrington and his fiancee were the first in line for a 40-inch flat-panel television.

"I can't feel my toes," Arrington said at 3:30 a.m. as temperatures hovered at 39 degrees.

I went to Walmart in bixby and you couldn't tell it was anything but a normal day even seemed a bit slow and didn't have to wait in any lines.

I'm glad all you people had money because my kids are going without x-mas this year. But we sure had some good peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for Thanksgiving. Everyone with money hope you have a happy year knowning you are making an outrageous amount of money while so many are doing without. As I have said before if people would just boycott these sporting events, movies and Wal-Mart maybe prices would come down.

hippienana, there were several charities providing food baskets for people in need, volunteers would even deliver them to you if you didn’t have transportation.
There were also several restaurants that provided free Thanksgiving dinner for people who were needy, volunteers would even pick your family up and drive you to the restaurant if you didn’t have transportation.
If your kids ate peanut butter and jelly shame on you.
You do have to extend your hand and let people know you’re in need.
If you think your special and expect everyone to read your mind and suddenly deliver a fully cooked meal to your door, well that’s just not going to happen!
Register at the Salvation Army, Toys for Tots and the Angel Tree and your kids will have toys for Christmas.
Same for Christmas dinner!
Stop sitting in front of your computer and whining.
Start seeking out the people and organizations waiting out there to help your family through the holidays.

Hippienana...maybe if you didnt spend $30 a month on internet access you could have taken advantage of Wal-Marts dinner for 4 for $20 special? Just a thought. Also if everyone just boycotts as you suggest then that does nothing to lower prices. It does however raise the unemployment rate because companies can no longer afford to pay employees. I assume something similar is the result of why you think your kids will not be having Christmas. However there are multiple charities that were created solely for the purpose of providing presents to underprivileged as well as meals. Maybe you could use your internet access to search for those instead of shaming those of us that spend money trying to improve the economy so companies can hire unemployed workers.

hippienana thanks for the warm wishes for the holiday season. I will be enjoying the fruits of my hard work this year. Sounds like you need to make some changes if you can't feed your family. No one can change it for you but YOU! Good luck my friend.

hippienana - Now I'M supposed to feel bad, because YOU are a failure? Is that what you are saying? Your trainwreck of a life is supposed to make ME feel guilty?

Your "boycott" argument shows exactly why you are a failure in life: If EVERYONE boycotted those events - before any prices came down, there'd be a TON more people unemployed!

Here's an idea - instead of sitting around wallowing in class envy, try making something of yourself. Quit whining on internet message boards - and go WORK. There ARE jobs out there that I'm sure pay better than the food stamps you're living off of now.

hippienana: I read many of your posts where it says you have a 37 and 19 year daughters, a son in law and grandkids that live with you. It sounds like you had a hard life growing up as well. Out of three 4 adults living there they should all be contributing to the household bills, if not I would suggest a family meeting to discuss finances. As others stated there are many agencies that help those who are having financial problems to provide for Thanksgiving and Christmas as well as DHS for AFDC, Wic, help with baby formula, other baby needs. There is Catholic Charities, many churches, Salvation Army helps with past due utility bills and more. I would suggest you and your grown daughter sign up for Christmas help and other help you may need. God Bless and hope next year is better for you.

I guess i am a party pooper. I stayed home and saved gas money. and eat left overs from thansgiving. and got on line and did pretty good selling on ebay.the only place i went was to the post office to mail several things i sold on ebay while i was sleeping.of course i am quite a bit older now and my fun is not the same as it was when i was young.but now after sellng all day long on ebay i have a lot to get ready for mondays mail. most of my sales are going to canada and calif with just a few to other states. so shows me a few others stayed home to avoid the crowds and save money to.and it was fun.oh i had family and kids and grand kids with me so i really enjoyed today.

I hope the rest enjoyed today as much as i did.

God Bless All of you.

Say what you want about Walmart, but they actually handled it pretty well this year, IMO. I went to the one in Edmond this morning about 4:15, and my shopping buddy went to the digital cameras while I went to the blu-ray players. Instead of getting people's hopes up (or worse: fighting for stuff), Walmart actually handed out "tickets" and if you got a ticket...you were guaranteed to get it. The checkout lines were another story, though

hippienana,I am sorry you and yours are having a rough time this year. You are not alone in this rough time. I am on unemployment because my boss decided to shut down the business without telling anyone. I have children and grandchildren. I went to Walmart at 4am and I do not regret it one bit. Because when I got up and went to these sales, I got winter coats for my 4 children for $7 a piece. Coats I couldn't have afforded otherwise. I bought my grandchildren much needed clothes.

I also look at it this way. You say boycott. Heres what happens if we boycott: job loss, rise in unemplyment, less sales tax taken in means less cops on our streets catching rapists, murderers and pedophiles, and with all that it would end up with utilities going up so that electricity you are using to complain might be shut off not only for you but for the many citizens that cannot afford a hike in bills.
So there are many good things that comes out of black friday. Its a chain effect. we pend and save money at this time but are also keeping things affordable at the same time. If we boycotted wal mart then even something like milk would skyrocket and we couldnt afford it. Basic supply and demand.

I am sick & tired of people whining about how much money others are making. Most of them worked their butts off for it too & deserve to have it. Whats wrong with that?
They should feel bad because others out there made bad choices?
Get a dream, work hard, persevere & kick butt to get what you want in life.

I am by no means complaining about how much money anyone is making. I was making good money and worked my tail off. I was very good at what I did. I was a health care provider that specialized in the elderly specifically alzheimers and cancer. I hold no grudge for people that work hard and reap the benefits. The only reason I am not working is through no decision of my own. My biss shut the doors of the business without notifying anyone. Am I complaining, No. Even though it was bad business it opened up new alternatives for me. I am in school to up my education yet again so when I enter the job market again I have even better skills to do my job and get an even better job.

Ya know,I know things are hard for alot of people who are tryin to make ends meet.More than the average now it seems like.Christmas always seems like it puts people in a hard shape. There are ways of doin for the children without even askin for help.Toys R US is a fine store for folks who have money. So is JC.Penney's and Sears, why even Wal-Mart can be considered as such as one of these stores, but there are sores with fine products and toys for ordinary folks such as hippegnana, and for well folks like me,who are just like ya.The Dollar Tree has great little items and so does the dollar store and family dollar...Even if I did have lots of bread to throw around I wouldnt.I'd probably shop JC.Penney's cause I like that store, but be sure I'd hit these cheap stores too.Cant imagine anyone not havin a Christmas, even if its a little one....I aint ashamed to say it,thats for the sharp nose folks who dont understand that.Christmas is about Love.

HAHA, stood in line at 3:30 in the morning for a 40" LCD at Target and froze your berry's eh? I was at Broken Arrow Target about 9:45 am, lite crowds, and plenty of 40" LCD's at the advertised price sitting there waiting to be bought.
(I'm talking a full pallet) Got EVERYTHING that I wanted that was advertised, walked right up to a cashier and was out the door in 15 minutes. Maybe it's just the thrill of standing or sleeping in the cold that turns people on? Not me, I'll wait a bit, let the rudeness of the crowds leave, and if in doubt, buy online for the same price if not cheaper, free shipping. Wow.

You were blessed and and didn't realize it. There are those who would liked to have had peanut butter, jelly or bread. They would have considered all three a feast and a blessing.

Hippienana,America was built on free enterprise and hard work.
1st Christmas is about Jesus Christ being born in human flesh to dye for our sins.
2nd Younger people seem to think that everyone owes them, that if someone works hard for their money and they have extra they should give it away.
3rd. I have experienced hard times with little income I worked 3 jobs and went to school at night to better my self. My income has doubled what it was before I went back to school. Yes I need to make more money and I'm not where I need to be, but NO ONE OWES ME! I work in a low income area and I see it everyday. Those who can work but won't because they want to live off of everyone else. They won't even volunteer at a church or a local school. I know of one lady that keeps having babies and is making more on welfare than I make.

A lot of non working people on welfare and SSI are taking in more money than a lot of working people.free food with no taxes and cheap rent free medical and free ckecks each month. why would they want to work for less. they would have to get up early and leave home and go do something they may not wont to do.

I am not putting them down that are disabled or the ones that want to do better or the ones who lost their jobs and will go back to work. I am talking about the ones who don`t want to work.some laws need to change. and something needs to be done to change their minds.
