Students evacuated from Bartlesville school; no danger in suspicious backpack found

Students were placed in lockdown mode and told to stay in their 5th hour classrooms around 2 p.m. after school officials observed a student who left a bag deemed suspicious in a hallway than quickly moved away.

"The student quickly left the area after putting the bag down , which brought suspicion and the school went into lockdown," community relations supervisor Chris Tanea said.

Bartlesville police and the Oklahoma Highway Patrol bomb squad later determined the backpack contained school supplies. A student had left it in the hallway with no harm intended.

The incident comes just before the one-year anniversary of the arrest of former Bartlesville student Sammie Chavez, who was convicted of planning a mass school shooting.

Saturday will be the anniversary of Chavez's arrest and also the one-year anniversary of the mass shooting in Newtown, Conn. that resulted in 28 deaths.

In Bartlesville, Chavez was accused of planning to lure students into a school auditorium where he planned to shoot them and place bombs at the doors.
