"August: Osage County"

Overview: View the first trailer for ‘August: Osage County,’ which offers us our first look inside the big house in rural Osage County where all the filming took place, in addition to all of the stars fussing and fighting.

The film is directed by John Wells, the longtime TV producer of “ER” and “The West Wing,” while the producers include George Clooney and Grant Heslov, who through their company have produced Oscar nominees “Good Night and Good Luck” and “The Ides of March.”

Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts and the other cast members of “August: Osage County” will be shooting their film in the Bartlesville and Pawhuska areas beginning next month.

What's the movie about? In "August: Osage County," a former college professor and one-time famous poet disappears from his residence in a rural area outside Pawhuska.

He has just hired a housekeeper to care for the home and to keep an eye on his pill-popping wife, but when he vanishes, generations of the Weston family descend upon the three-story home.

A dozen people inside a house at such an emotional time is bound to create a scene or two. The Westons have so many sins and secrets they are hiding that Tulsa-native Tracy Letts created what many have deemed one of the great American plays out of all their volcanic scenes.

Tragedy brings the family together, to confront and to attack one another, with the assault led by family matriarch Violet Weston. The result is a comedy and a drama of epic proportions.

The play is becoming a movie, and the stars are coming to Oklahoma.

THE STARS
So who’s coming to northeastern Oklahoma to shoot “August: Osage County”? Here’s who we know is involved in the film so far, and their roles in making the movie.

Meryl Streep as Violet Weston
Meryl Streep portrays the family matriarch of the Weston clan, an acid-tongued woman living with mouth cancer, addicted to multiple narcotics and willing to reveal painful family secrets if they serve her purposes.

Julia Roberts as Barbara Weston
Roberts will play Violet’s oldest daughter, Barbara, a college professor who is married but currently separated. While Barbara might like to save her marriage and rein in both her mother and her pot-smoking teen daughter, but her controlling nature may not allow such wishes.

Chris Cooper as Charles Aiken
Cooper has been cast as Charlie, the long-suffering husband of Mattie Fae. He’s been cowed by her spiteful comments into becoming a man who’s too afraid to put his foot down and restore order to his marriage.

Abigail Breslin as Jean Fordham
Abigail Breslin is cast to play the 14-year-old daughter of Barbara and Bill, who is none too happy about her parents’ split. The smart-mouthed girl’s reaction has been to take up smoking both pot and cigarettes. Abigail Breslin, the breakout Oscar-nominee from “Little Miss Sunshine,” whose resume ranges from “Kit Kittredge: An American Girl” to “Zombieland.”

Juliette Lewis as Karen
Lewis has been cast as the youngest of Violet’s daughters, Karen, who arrives home from Florida, where she lives with her fiance. Karen is blissful to the point of delusion withregarding the man she plans to marry, considering his own dirty secrets.

Benedict Cumberbatch as Little Charles
Cumberbatch is a surprise choice to play the son of Mattie Fae and Charlie, as a 37-year-old man who is unemployed and who’s grown accustomed to his mother referring to him as the “screw-up” of the family. The British star of “Sherlock” on BBC and an increasing presence in movies, Cumberbatch will make the most use of a dialect coach.

Sam Shepard as Beverly
Shepard has the small, but important, role of Beverly, Violet’s husband. The character makes only a brief appearance at the start of the play, and his disappearance sparks a gathering of the family at the ancestral home.

Misty Upham as Johnna
Johnna, the Weston family’s live-in housekeeper, who is hired by Beverly just days before his disappearance. The American Indian woman (a Cheyenne) has few lines but is a constant presence, making her something of a silent witness to the Westons’ theatrics. Upham is best known for her acclaimed supporting role in the 2008 drama “Frozen River.”

Margo Martindale as Mattie Fae
Violet’s younger sister who lives nearby and who is equally mean-spirited. Mattie Fae directs most of her verbal attacks toward berating her husband, Charlie, and belittling her son, “Little” Charles. Texas native Martindale, an Emmy-winner last year for playing a maternal crime lord in “Justified” on FX, knows how to deliver this accent.

Dermot Mulroney as Steve
Steve is the oily businessman from Florida who is supposedly Karen’s “perfect” fiance. He arrives in Oklahoma and proves himself to be every bit as loathsome as any member of the Weston clan. Mulroney, perhaps best known for his role opposite Julia Roberts in “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” reunites with the star in this cast.

Ewan McGregor as Bill
Bill, the estranged husband of Barbara, makes his way to Oklahoma to show his support for the family at this time of crisis. McGregor (“Moulin Rouge!” and Obi-Wan Kenobi in the newer “Star Wars” films) is the second British actor cast, along with Cumberbatch.

Julianne Nicholson as Ivy Weston
Nicholson will play Ivy Weston, a daughter of Meryl Streep's character and the middle sister of characters played by Julia Roberts and Juliette Lewis. Nicholson, who is better known for her TV work in "Boardwalk Empire" and other series than films, is a surprise for the role.
