CONTINUING COVERAGE

Teen Pregnancy

Overview: Oklahoma has improved its teen birth rate in the past five years but still moved up to the fourth highest in the U.S., according to recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The state reduced the rate of teenage births by 18 percent between 2007 and 2011, but U.S. teen births declined by 25 percent with all but two states showing decreases of more than 15 percent.

The state's dropout rate fell to 2.4 percent during the 2009-2010 school year, which is part of a steady decline since 2005-2006 when it was at 3.6 percent, according to the U.S. Department of Education.

The Tulsa World is examining different aspects of this issue, including school prevention programs, services offered for teen moms and research into what works to prevent teen pregnancy and what doesn't work. We also will feature individuals working to intervene in the ongoing societal issue as well as women and girls on the front lines.
