Claremore

Overview: Claremore, just 30 miles northeast of Tulsa, is known for a museum honoring Oklahoma's favorite son, Will Rogers, a famous cowboy, performer and writer.

The town recently revitalized its downtown district, which is along Route 66. Claremore is the county seat of Rogers County and includes Rogers State University, one of Oklahoma's fastest growing universities.

Its attractions include the Will Rogers Memorial, a museum built on land purchased by Rogers. He had hoped to retire in Claremore but died in a plane crash in 1935, when he was just 55 years old. The museum includes memorabilia of his career and his tomb. The J.M. Davis Arms and Historical Museum includes a collection of more than 20,000 firearms. The Rodgers and Hammerstein musical "Oklahoma!" was set in Claremore.

Claremore's 18,867 population in 2012 was 19 percent higher than the 2000 census. Rogers County saw a 23 percent increase since 2000, thanks to its proximity to job centers in Tulsa and the Port of Catoosa.
