Sapulpa

Overview: Sapulpa, about 15 miles southwest of Tulsa, is the county seat of Creek County.

It is named after its first settler, Chief Sapulpa, a Creek Indian, who established a trading post. Business grew after a railroad spur from Tulsa was built in 1886 followed by the discovery of oil in Glenpool in 1905.

The area produced walnuts and was known for glass manufacturing, brick and clay products, and Frankoma Pottery. Route 66 cuts through downtown Sapulpa, which is on the National Registry of Historic Places.

The city's 2012 population was 20,793, an 8.5-percent increase since the 2000 census.
