Col. Brian Allgood was among 12 soldiers who died in a chopper crash Saturday.

An Army colonel with family ties to Oklahoma was one of 12 soldiers killed Saturday in Iraq when their helicopter crashed at Baghdad.

According to the Department of Defense, Col. Brian D. Allgood, 46, was assigned to the 30th Medical Brigade, European Regional Medical Command, Heidelberg, Germany.

Lawton surgeon Richard Allgood said a missile hit the Black Hawk helicopter his nephew was riding in.

Allgood said he will always remember his nephew as fun and energetic, an outdoorsman with a fondness for athletics.

"It was probably his interest in athletics that led him into orthopedic medicine," his uncle said.

Richard Allgood said his nephew was an avid University of Oklahoma sports fan.

The last time he was with his nephew, he said, was at the 2004 Sugar Bowl game between OU and Louisiana State University.

"We had a great time together until we lost" the game, Richard Allgood said.

He said his nephew came from a military family.

Richard Allgood said he rose to the rank of major in the Army and served in Vietnam.

Also serving in Vietnam was Gerald Allgood, his nephew's father, now living in Colorado Springs, Colo., with his wife, Cleo.

Gerald Allgood is a retired Army colonel.

Richard Allgood said another brother, Ron Allgood, is a retired Air Force colonel now living in Altus.

The uncle said his nephew was born in Germany, where his father was stationed, and later graduated from high school at Colorado Springs.

Brian Allgood's wife, Jane, was a West Point graduate and has retired from the Army. The couple has a son, Wyatt. They are living in Germany.

Brian Allgood was a 1982 graduate of West Point, and attended OU medical school, graduating from there in 1986, Richard Allgood said.

Allgood said his nephew went to Iraq last summer. Allgood said his nephew was in charge of medical military facilities in Iraq for all coalition forces.

Prior to his deployment to Iraq, Brian Allgood spent two years in Korea, where he was also in charge of military medical facilities, the uncle said.

He said his nephew served as a medical officer in Panama, and parachuted into that country during the 1989 invasion.

"He loved the military," the uncle said of his nephew. "He knew the risks, but went willingly and without reservation."

"We expected him to be general before long. Nothing had been promised, but that was our feeling," Richard Allgood said.

"This was tragic. Everyone is very upset," he said.

Richard Allgood said memorial services will be held at a yet-to-be-determined time in Colorado Springs.

In addition to his parents, wife and child, Allgood is survived by a brother, Brad, of Dallas; and a sister, Becky, of Colorado Springs.
