Proposed law sparks fear, mistrust

Margarita Vega-Trevino, a member of a local task force that aims to educate the public on House Bill 1804, speaks Saturday during a meeting at East Central High School. House Bill 1804 requires police officers to check the immigration status of anyone arrested for a felony.

"What if they deport me and take away my children?"

The woman asked the question before nearly 500 people who gathered Saturday afternoon at East Central High School to discuss concerns and confusion about the state's sweeping immigration reform law and police procedures that were recently recommended by the Tulsa City Council.

The woman spoke in Spanish, as did many of the people who asked questions at the more than two-hour-long, bilingual meeting hosted by the American Dream Coalition and the Coalition of Hispanic Organizations.

It is one in a series that will be held across the state to inform people about House Bill 1804.

HB 1804, among other things, requires law enforcement by Nov. 1 to begin checking the immigration status on anyone arrested for a felony or drunk driving.

It has stirred a great amount of fear in members of the Hispanic community. Those here illegally fear deportation; some here legally fear racial profiling.

That unease mounted several days ago when the City Council passed a resolution recommending that Tulsa police officers check the immigration status of anyone arrested for a felony or misdemeanor. Mayor Kathy Taylor has two weeks to pass or veto the City Council's nonbinding resolution.

Interim Police Chief David Bostrom addressed the unease as a member of the panel at Saturday's meeting.

"I cannot

speak for the mayor, but it is my understanding that she does not want us to make inquiries about immigration status," said Bostrom, who was named interim chief about two weeks ago.

Loud applause came from the audience gathered in the dimly lit auditorium. They were mostly Hispanic, many there with their spouses and small children.

Their message was clear: We are afraid.

Gabriela Priego works with victims of domestic violence and sexual assault at the Family Safety Center in Tulsa, where almost 11 percent of clients are Hispanic.

She said some victims are growing hesitant to report such crimes for fear they will be deported.

"We don't ask for immigration status, but we do ask for ID and they are reluctant to give it," Priego said. "We are definitely concerned."

Carmen Meza pushed her 15-month-old son in a stroller outside the cheering auditorium. She doesn't speak English well but said through an interpreter that she is afraid.

Not for herself, because she said she's here legally, but for some family members who aren't.

Those on the panel Saturday included immigration attorneys, members of the American Civil Liberties Union of Oklahoma, local pastors, and representatives of the League of United Latin American Citizens.

Also there were members of a task force recently formed in Tulsa to educate the public about HB 1804, a plight that goes beyond the Hispanic community.

"We want to educate them (the non-Hispanics) so they can make an informed decision, so they can realize we are not talking any more about immigration," said Margarita Vega-Trevino, a member of the task force and director of the Spanish-language publication Hispano de Tulsa.

"We are talking about the level of hate this law is creating."

The task force took up a collection Saturday to buy billboard space to express their opinion of HB 1804.

One proposed billboard says: "Is it OK for Oklahomans to have a law that promotes hate among people?"

Perfect example of how his has became out of hand. Saturday while at Braden park there were app 200 hispanics gathered (nothing wrong with that in it self). While tying to enjoy the park ourselves we noticed trash everywhere and who was putting it there. While trying to mention this to a mother we received a tongue lashing in guess what "spanish" as it appeared no english speakers would acknowledge us. This is one of the many problems when people come with no respect for others and live "secretly" inside our very city (country). Maybe if people wereforced to at least speak the language of the country you want so much to live in there would be less confusion. This has gotten out of control.

How about this. If an American catches an illegal, that illegal has to work for the American for free for a year. I bet that would stop the illegals.

It is galling to read the slanted info that these speakers put forth. 1804 does not create hate. Nor was it written with hate. It was brought about by the failure of our Federal,State, and local governments to do anything to stop the invasion. Maybe some of them should live awhile in North Tulsa with us poor legal citizens who are minorities and sit up with us till after midnight some nights waiting for the police to once again go tell the illegals to stop the woofer speakers and don't be so loud themselves. It goes on and on. My Hispanic neighbors have not made a good impression. But I shall not move away like some of the slumlords did who are renting to them.

I can understand why people who have illegally invaded our borders and broken our laws to enter our county would be scared. If there weren't so many people doing this we wouldn't require these new laws to protect Tulsa and the United States of America.

Now come the consequences for their actions, they are required to return to their country of orgin. The lady shouldn't worry about her children. Our government will make sure they are sitting on the bus right next to her as she is deported back across the border.

It's time Mayor Taylor started listening to the citizens of Tulsa and stop pandering to the illegal aliens who have invaded Tulsa. If she doesn't, hopefully she will be bounced our of office in the next election-that is if she even plans on running!

I can't understand why our govenmernt is in bed with Mexico. Maybe they should spend their time working on Mexico's economy instead of bringing the population of the entire country into America!

I can't believe she had the nerve to say" What if they deport me and take my children"She wouldn't have had to worry about it if she was here legally. Let me go into Mexico and demand citizenship and benefits. We'll see how far that goes.

What does obeying the law have to do with being a racist? It has nothing to do with racism. I have many Mexican friends here legally and obide by the laws. Victor Orta claims to be a man of the cloth. If he were he would not be supporting these illegal criminals. Orta would tell these people to go back and come back here legally the way a lot of them have. This is America press 1 for English, press 2 to terminate until you can speak English.

The Holy Bible says to obey the laws of the land. Those who obey have no reason to fear. P.S. maybe Orta can't find his papers...

Stay tuned. The Tulsa Minuteman Project is working on a very public project that will be announced soon. We intend to hold those who do not support the rule of law in America, Oklahoma and Tulsa publiclly accountable for their actions or inactions. This is not and never will be a racial issue. This is an issue pertaining to enforcing our laws.

Interesting that the number of Hispanic people violating the laws is increasing so fast, they now have the influence to make our mayor and our new police chief not even want to TRY to enforce the laws!

Mrs. Vega-Trevino needs to understand this has nothing to do with hate, it's about people here illegally. What other laws to try to maintain order does she object to? She might like it if it was more like Mexico here, I guess. Well, she just has to wait, it's getting that way. If police can't check on questionable persons who commit felonies, might as well be no police protection.

The police chief better do some reading of the new law, esp. Section 10. He & TPD are required to enforce it. Mayor & resolution & all that are not necessary. He don't need to be undercutting the legislature.

Let's call it what it really is...anti-Mexican, not anti-illegal immigration. This whole issue is a red herring, designed to divert our attention from the war, social security, and the deficit. Some "people" can always be counted on to crawl down into the mud when it comes to people of a different color/culture...and trying to hide your obvious racism, behind a thin veneer of patriotism and a desire to see the law enforced is so sickening, I'm appalled that more people don't speak out against it. First of all, we don't have thousands of armed criminals streaming acroos the border raping white women and stealing pickup trucks, like the media would have you believe. The overwhelming majority of these "people" just want a job so that they can support their families, and any job will do, and they are willing to risk their lives to come here. Seems like to me we could use some of this work ethic in this country. I'd trade Paris Hilton and Bobby Brown for an "illegal alien" any day. And another thing...no one seems to notice the number of Eastern Europeans, Canadians, Australians, and Britains who came to this country, many illegally, and simply stayed, but seem to find no trouble getting US citizenship...where's all the outrage for them?

Call me cold-hearted, but I cannot muster one ounce of sympathy for the illegals that are demanding their "rights." Some observations from the story:

1) One woman asked the question: "What if they deport me and take away my children?" If you are deported, were you planning on just LEAVING your kids??!! How 'bout you take them with you!

2) The previously mentioned woman "spoke in Spanish, as did many of the people who asked questions..." No kidding? My "hate-monger" response: LEARN ENGLISH. I'm tired of pressing 1 and tired of all the bilingual signs/advertising.

3) "Those here illegally fear deportation." And your point?! Isn't that the LAW?

4) "Loud applause came from the audience in the dimly lit auditorium." Hiding in the dark, but demanding their "rights." Oh, the irony.

5) "Their message was clear: We are afraid." Good.

6) "Is it OK for Oklahomans to have a law that promotes hate among people." No. It IS OK to have a law that promotes LEGAL immigration and punishes those who choose to break the law. This is NOT about race; it's about the law.

7) "Those on the panel included...members of the American Civil Liberties Union of Oklahoma..." Talk about ironic!! A group that supposedly fights for the "rights" (civil liberties) of AMERICANS (that's their name) now defends illegals! Maybe they should change their name to "American or NOT Civil Liberties Union."

As far as KT, she's simply using Tulsa as a political stepping-stone.

Maybe I'm missing something here but does it seem to anyone else that the only ones making the racist comments are the ones who are against the rule of law. I don;t think I've made one racist comment nor have I called anyone names...but David Duke (who i suspect just might be an illegal) resorts to calling me the KKK. They always play the race card, it's all they have.

University of Kanses...Please let me dissect your comments...with all due respect.

Let's call it what it really is...anti-Mexican, not anti-illegal immigration. (this is a racist comment, all illegal immigration is breaking the law regardless of race) This whole issue is a red herring, designed to divert our attention from the war, social security, and the deficit. (illegal immigration costs our country billions and now we are considering giving SSI benefits to illegals) Some "people" can always be counted on to crawl down into the mud when it comes to people of a different color/culture...and trying to hide your obvious racism, behind a thin veneer of patriotism and a desire to see the law enforced is so sickening, (another racist and anti-American comment. If you disagree with being a Patriot then maybe you should live in a country that you can feel Patriotic about) I'm appalled that more people don't speak out against it. (maybe because most folks agree with it) First of all, we don't have thousands of armed criminals streaming across the border raping white women (racist comment) and stealing pickup trucks, like the media would have you believe. (we do have armed individuals streaming across the border and it's much worse than reported in the mainstream media) The overwhelming majority of these "people" just want a job so that they can support their families, and any job will do, and they are willing to risk their lives to come here. (and these people send most of their money back to Mexico to support their families. This means that we do not even have the benefit of this money coming back into our local economies. They do not want to be Americans, they want to be "migrants". it's not assimilation they want) Seems like to me we could use some of this work ethic in this country. I'd trade Paris

Hilton and Bobby Brown for an "illegal alien" any day. (they might be disgusting but they're legal citizens) And another thing...no one seems to notice the number of Eastern Europeans, Canadians, Australians, and Britains who came to this country, many illegally, and simply stayed, but seem to find no trouble getting US citizenship...where's all the outrage for them? (another racist comment...do you have documentation to back up this claim?)

I think it is sickening for us to even listen to the bleeding hearts "FIRSTSAI", "David Duke" SEND ILLEGAL ALIENS HOME. Why would anyone want third world country people here illegally. We have enough poor people as it is. I for one am sick of paying the price for it. This isnt racist it is a fact. It is the law. If the illegal mexicans are afraid or if they are not afraid can go back to mexico today. To bad the fools cant even read all these comments. If they really wanted to be a citizen they would learn our language. But they dont even have enough education to do that. I am sick of these third world country people sneaking into this country. If the feds wont do anything I think the local government should take a stand. Taylor is a good mayor and is not thinking about this city wellbeing. She needs to sign this bill. End of story.
