WASHINGTON -- U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn's office revealed Wednesday that Coburn had undergone surgery to remove a "benign pituitary tumor."

In a brief prepared statement, the surgery was described as successful.

"The procedure involved no complications and he is expected to make a full and speedy recovery," it stated.

"We don't have a date certain for his return, but we do expect him to be able to resume his Senate duties full-time by the end of the month."

That statement, which said the surgery took place in the morning, was received late Wednesday afternoon.

In response to questions, Coburn spokesman Aaron Cooper said the 59-year-old senator had the surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.

"He could be released from the hospital as early as tomorrow," Cooper said.

"He will be recovering at home in Muskogee."
