Video: Watch a video of the Belvedere coming out of the vault on Friday.

The 1957 Plymouth Belvedere buried under the Tulsa County Courthouse lawn the past 50 years turned out to be more artifact than memento when unwrapped Friday night.

Fears that the car had been badly damaged by water that had found its way into the Belvedere's vault proved true. Rust and corrosion caused car expert Boyd Coddington to abandon plans to start the Belvedere on the Convention Center Arena stage.

Coddington said the Belvedere had "a lot of personality" but "what I see is a lot of rust."

A time capsule buried with the car was also taken to the arena. The time capsule, which turned out to be a double-walled steel tank, remained tight and yielded a number of artifacts including entries for a contest whose winner gets the car and proceeds from a $100 savings account now worth a little over $700.

Despite morning showers, several thousand spectators turned out for the noon hoisting of the Belvedere from its resting space. Many others watched a closed-circuit telecast in the Convention Center.

Later, hundreds watched for nearly two hours from the concourse at the north end of the Convention Center and peered down from the adjacent parking garage as workers washed off the cars covering, aired up its tires and moved it by forklift into the

arena.

All 7,300 seats for the unveiling at the convention center were sold and most were used.

Just keep Boyd Coddington's paws off it after the ceremony. The last thing this car needs is to be desecrated into one of his customized freak shows on wheels

I agree, I heard him say he was going to remove the cover and then put it back on. I hope that is not the case. He needs to leave it as it is until tonight! Sharon King Davis, please DO NOT allow him to touch it!

Think about the Media Campaign that Daimler Chrysler is missing since they killed Plymouth !

C'mon, like the event organizers would let him do that to their centerpiece? He's a celebrity mechanic giving it a once-over, not a complete overhaul and rebuild in a couple hours. Best case is that it fires right up with few problems. Worse case, it's a hunk of rust. Why don't we wait and see?

Let Boyd do his magic. #1 and #2 are not speaking for the majority of us so don't give creedance to their pathetic pleas.

I think they should leave it alone until 7PM tonight. Why should they get to see it before anyone else? Just unveil it live and fiddle with it in front of everyone.

Please dont let Boyds sideshow mess with the car.We would rather see it in its natural uncleaned state as it was when removed from the vault.Looking forward to seeing the car.

coddington magic ? watch his tv show. he's a bad tempered blowhard. his guys do all the work while he sits around and gabs with the big money car owners. the workers do all the magic, he's just a pencil pusher ! - besides, after seeing the mud covered fin on the plymouth, i doubt anyone is going to start it anytime soon

He needs to just leave the car alone!!! He should not be allowed to uncover it and then recover it. Who the hell does he think he is?

I would have really liked to see the car uncovered as soon as it was brought out of the hole. as far as boyd is concerned he is one of the greats! he personaly created some of the greatest hot rods of all times. he put in his work and now his crew does the work. he worked for many years and now he is the boss. dont believe everything you see on TV I cant think of a better crew to get in there and get the old 57 running. just my 2 cents..

Why doesn't this brief mention that the car was submerged in a few feet of water? It is probably severely damaged. This vehicle will likely never speed down the highway of 2007.

Leave it alone? Coddington is working on the car ahead of the show so they can at least attempt to get it started this evening. Think about it; even for a care in the best condition (which the Belvedere currently isn't!), there's a lot more involved after 50 years than just turning a key.

Would you really be interested in ANY car that has set in at least 3ft of water or any length of time? They are not showing it until this evening...maybe to put some non rusted hubcaps and wheels? Get the funky stagnated water smell out of it?

My guess is that it doesn't start and once it has a chance to "air out", it falls apart. This thing being a rust bucket will be the butt of many late night jokes and Oklahomans will be portrayed as a bunch of red neck's that couldn't build a waterproof hole. I wish this was not the case, but with all the media attention building up to this, the hole being filled with water was pretty sad.

I have been following this story for a little over a year now. It doesn't matter if the car has been consumed by rust, it is still a great story. People will remember this for years.

How exciting for you all!!! I hope Miss Belvedere Survived all these years!! I dont think You all should just cover up the hole. I think you should get a 2007 Chrysler, or Dodge (since Plymouth is no more), and make a time capsule and put it back in the hole and seal it for the next 50 years for Tulsarama 2057. How appropriate this would be to carry on this tradition. William Kieffert, Denver Colorado

I am dissapointed in the way the car unveiling is being handled. They opened the vault early so suprise of the state of the vault was ruined. They are unwrapping the car early, so the surprise and authenticity of the unveiling is compromised. Of course Sharon King Davis organized the event, this is the lady who built her shopping center "On the river" with the shops facing the parking lot and the dumpsters on the river.

All Tulsa needs now is a trailer park tornado victim to be seen on David Letterman toothless and non shaven, sputtering hick language of how the tornado "couldn't keep him an Sharrin Jeen from seeing this car" and thank god we're alive!

I agree, never should have been opened early and certainly shouldn't be uncovered before tonight. Seeing it in its freshly removed state would be more interesting than seeing it buffed up for tv.

I think most of us want to see what 50 years can do to it instead of seeing Boyd touch it first to be honest.

Gosh I hope Boyd doesn't get his hands on this one. This is a piece of history not a freak showcar. I will be so saddened if he gets his hands on it and ruins it.

The early opening for sure ruined some of the surprise. It should have been opened, lifted and wrapper removed all tonight at one time. I read that the car was sprayed with a grease like substance before it was wrapped. The fin that was showing red and mud could just be attached to the greasy substance. Hopefully Coddington leaves it alone. Great job Tulsa! Be proud no matter what shape its in!!

I love all of the attention the car and OKLAHOMA is getting. And to this, this has nothing to do with football. Wow! My vote is to keep is covered! I'm so excited, regardless what the car looks like!

How sad that people want to clean, buff and fool with an exciting part of Tulsa's past. Tulsans and the whole world should get to see it in it's true state then show it tuned up and pretty in a week. I hope when we all watch at 7pm tonite that is what we see.

I wonder if Chrysler is having second thoughts about the Prowler they buried in 2000 in the Centinial Time Capsule?
