Attorney for regents says he's studying immigrant act
By Staff Reports

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Bob Anthony, the attorney for the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education, told the regents Wednesday that he is taking time to interpret how a new law related to illegal immigrants will affect public colleges.
He is consulting with other state agencies and waiting to see whether the federal law changes, whether an interest group files a lawsuit against the Oklahoma law that takes effect in November, and whether any elected official in Oklahoma asks for an attorney general's opinion interpreting the law.
House Bill 1804 will allow illegal immigrants to qualify for resident tuition rates by applying for legal status or signing an affidavit saying they will apply for legal status as soon as a federal mechanism exists for them to apply, Anthony said. Qualifications for scholarships and financial aid are more restrictive.
Illegal immigrants who sign up for the Oklahoma's Promise scholarship for low-income families by July 2 will be allowed to receive the scholarship regardless of their legal status, said Bryce Fair, Oklahoma's vice chancellor for scholarships and grants.
Anthony said that according to changes prescribed by HB 1804, those who sign up for Oklahoma's Promise -- also known as Oklahoma Higher Learning Access Program -- after July 2 will have to prove their legality when they get to college, not when they sign up for the program.

This is stupid. I dont have a problem paying taxes. But it seems it only benefits the low income. I am discriminated against because I have a job. Tax payers support enough begging people who are already citizens we dont need more people on the band wagon. My elderly mother can barely survive on social security! how about giving the elderly more money instead of planning on taking care of illegal immigrants when they pass the bill. They should have to earn it. And all i have heard them do is whine. What the h_ll is wrong with this picture. Are we all STUPID!

Can this policy EVER be right? Let me see if I get this: we are going to charge US citizens from out of state the out-of-state tuition rate, but --- we are going to charge ILLEGAL people from ??? the in-state tuition rate?? Come on, puleeeze!!! It's enough to make US citizens want to join the minutemen! The affidavit thing is a crock, because a federal mechanism already DOES exist for someone to apply, so an affidavit should never be accepted! This stinks. There should be some advantage in already being a citizen. And there should be a disadvantage to being here illegally, Bob Anthony!

Students going for the Ok Promise scholarship have to be "low or middle-income students who take college-preparatory classes, make good grades and stay out of trouble" according to a news item last month. Oklahoma taxpayers funded this to give free tuition to promising, deserving students. So this is a good deal for ANY students from anywhere who are not in trouble here, even if not here legally. Um, wait a minute, just what IS trouble here?

what the heck gives an illegal the right to recieve benefits rightfully set aside for AMERICANS residing and living legally inside the United States. Maybe the lawmakers are misinterpreting the word AMERICAN and including Central Americans (mexicans) and South Americans (below mexico), all of which are not residng legally inside the United States. Quit giving our tax dollars to illegal criminals, we are paying enough to house our own criminals in the penal system as it is. Let our natural young citizens grow up and recieve the benefits they rightfully deserve instead of havingto wait in line for an illegal who cannot even communicate properly.

It is insanity to give our tax dollars away to those who have already broken our laws in order to be here. Any give-aways for reduced tuition need to be reserved exclusively for American citizens. Whoever is responsible for allowing in-state tuition for illegal aliens needs to be tarred and feathered and put in stocks for a few days. These aliens should get nothing, not even high cost tuition if they are here illegally. This is crazy - talk about giving away your children's inheritance to strangers. I'm ready to vote out anyone who isn't 100% against having illegals here and for border control and sending them all back.

Wait a minute. Is the TW baiting us with this kind of story? Does the TW just wanna see how many of us steam, storm & post our rants here??? Well, I'm not gonna take the bait. I refuse to say how disgusting it is for hardworking Okies fighting against tech outsourcing, layoffs & dirty office politics to see how our tax money meant for lil Jasons & Jennifers up the street is being used to educate whoever decides to escape the Laredo drug wars! Not gonna say it.

Make that Nuevo Laredo. But the war probably is on both sides of the border.

Ok, I already have to pay taxes to pay for public education of Illegal Immigrants. I also pay for all their immunizations (which are many) so they can go free to OUR public schools. Now, you want to give them in-state tuition! Oh, wait. Let's don't forget about the free WICK program and also the free state insurance program. I had to pay for all of my kid's immunizations, and over 650/month for our health insurance. Because I work my behind off, we don't qualify for anything "free" in college for my kids. Quit rewarding them for being here illegally! Quit rewarding folks for not working!!!Not everyone has to go to college, right away, right now. No more "Free Stuff" for Illegals!!! We have enough freeloaders that are legal!!
