Ex-teacher allegedly viewed porn at library
CHILD-PORN CHARGE FILED
William Lee Hunter Jr.:
Tulsa Public Schools records show that he taught during the 2006-07 school year at Springdale Elementary School but resigned at the end of the year.

A man who recently taught at a Tulsa elementary school is accused of accessing child pornography at the downtown Tulsa City-County library.
Tulsa County prosecutors charged William Lee Hunter Jr. on Thursday with procuring or possessing child pornography at the Central Library.
Tulsa Public Schools records show that Hunter taught during the 2006-07 school year at Springdale Elementary School, 2510 E. Pine St.
Hunter, who had been a TPS employee since January 2002, submitted his resignation effective at the end of the just-concluded school year, said Roger Holder, a compliance officer for the school district.
In a court document, a Tulsa police detective asserts that Hunter, while logged on to a library computer, "accessed child pornography and downloaded two child pornography videos to the hard drive."
A police affidavit states that a security guard noted suspicious behavior by Hunter at the library Monday and "watched his activity from a covert position."
The guard saw Hunter view child pornography videos and called the police, who approached Hunter when he was still at a computer station, the affidavit says.
Police arrested Hunter, of Tulsa, on Monday and took him to the Detective Division.
An affidavit by Detective W. Scott Gibson states that "I unarrested the defendant pending forensic analysis" of the computer's hard drive.
Gibson's affidavit states that when interviewed, Hunter said that when he sat down at an open computer, the "child pornography website and videos were already opened."
Hunter admitted that he browsed the Web site and viewed the videos, the affidavit says.
With the charge filed, Hunter, 41, was arrested Friday afternoon and placed in the Tulsa Jail, records show.
Typically, a library computer user logs in with his or her library card number.
Hunter logged onto the computer using the library card of a person who, when applying for the card, listed the defendant as his foster father, police reported.
Richard Parker, deputy director of the Tulsa City-County Library System, said Friday that a filter system protects library computers, but he said the filters are not able to catch everything in the ever-evolving Internet.
"We think the filter system we have is still the best available," Parker said.
Blocks are placed on inappropriate sites as they are brought to the attention of staff members.
Librarians and staff members are "very vigilant and watchful in terms of what goes on" regarding computer use, Parker said.
The felony charge filed against Hunter allows a maximum prison sentence of 20 years, Assistant District Attorney Brandon Whitworth said.

If the tulsa library system had filters on their PC's this could not have happened there. There is no telling what the kids are looking at on those library PC's. But the libraries and the ACLU (american criminals liberties union) could care less about our kids.

It sounds like the library cares a great deal, considering the proactive steps they took to address this situation.

ET is wrong in blaming the library and the ACLU, American Civil Liberties Union, for the criminal use of computers at the Central Tulsa Library.
First, it was the vigilance of the librarians that led to Mr. Hunter’s arrest. The library staff acted swiftly and appropriately in this case.
Regarding the library’s lack of care for children, Tulsa County Libraries offer a safe, warm, educational environment for kids. It is obvious that ET has not visited an area library.
As for ET’s statement about the ACLU, the mission of the ACLU is “to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed to every person in this country by the Constitution and laws of the United States.”
The ACLU’s defense of our civil liberties helps prevent America from becoming a totalitarian state. In doing so, they often take controversial positions. One that comes to mind is their defense of the OxyContin and hydrocodone addict Rush Limbaugh. They argued, correctly, that even a drug addict like Limbaugh has the right to keep his medical records private.
ET should reserve judgment for the accused, Mr. Hunter, and not try to lay blame where it doesn’t belong.

People who create & distribute child pornography should be hunted down & chemically neutered. But how could it be an arrestable offense to simply view it at a website, where you might have wound up thru a bad url? Is just watching something on a computer screen a felony? It doesn't seem to ME that would = procuring & possessing." Should mere curiosity land you in prison? Everybody knows the library filters out these sites, why would someone go there to seek out porn? Doesn't make sense.

What scares me the most is my grandchildren are going to Springdale, and they were there last yr. I'm going to ask them today if they know this man and if he ever said anything out of order to them, or if they have heard any of their friends say anything about this "man". I guess you could call him that? It's so sad, I hope they throw the book at him..meaning the BIBLE. He'll have alot of time on his hands after this.

The article stated the security guard saw suspicious behavior with Mr. Hunter. What was the suspicious behavior? It seems to me that the security guard was watching the same video. Why didn't he just warn the man that this wasn't acceptable when he first saw the video on the screen but it seems he stood and watched also from his covert position. As for ram's comment I hope the Bible is thrown at him, well the Bible say don't judge others because you will be judged especially if you don't know all the facts, because we all have some type of vices in our lives that is not acceptable to the Lord. I don't understand why this is not completely filtered from public access. Mr. Hunter while a teacher at Sprindale ram was always attentive towards his class. Yes I understand your concerns as a grandparent but don't start unnecessary rumors and plese don't put words in your grandchildren's mouths because he who is without sin let him cast the first stone.

ya know those who think their bible is the only law is just laughable. we dont know the whole story. why pass judgment before we know the story. lets fire up the boiling oil and the stake and lets start burning these sickos. haha well as history shows we need to teach our children not put thier heads in the sand like we have for the last 10 years.

I do agree with you that our children need to be taught about this world we live in and it is so sad that our children's innocence can't stay with them longer because they do have to be warned about unproper behaviors of all sorts.

Great, 20 years in the pen, stamped sex offender for life, what do you think this guy is going to do when he's released? Get a job and be a productive member of society? Oh, and the article didn't even mention the nature of the "child pornography". A 17 year old that looked like a 18 year old?

I suppose if they tried hard enough, they could find this type of stuff on every computer that has ever accessed the internet. That being said, after this guy has his day in court, a year from now, the whole incident will have been forgotten, and after getting the therapy he probably obviously needs, he can get on with his life...as long as any future employment comes with a caveat about his previous behavior. By the way, don't we have enough criminals committing serious crimes against children, to go after than guys looking at pictures? There's no evidence that people who look at pictures are any more capable of harming a child, than people who don't.

1. very disappoint in TULSA WORLD or any other news media that try a case in the media before a fair trial.
2. I personally, have used the public library internet and was appalled when the URL dropped open and I saw mainly porno and out of state arrest warrant sites, that I personally had NEVER visited, but once one did pop up without my asking for the site.
3. how many times I have been unjustly accused or even stopped at airport security for my "suspicious" appearance...too many to
count in my 60+years, as a white blue eyed/blonde female...THANK GOD..it wasn't a slow news day, or I too, would be tried in the media.
4. I do understand that "POLITICS" play a major part in how this matter is being handled
and this poor soul is being hungout as a "trophy" proof that Tulsa's leaders are hard at work, but this is a "rush to judgement"..the hearing has only taken place in the media. Shame on our city leaders who condon media trials...much rather hear about this once fair trial and the final gavel sounds on the Judges podium...Obviously they don't have enough evidence against this man and they are on a "fishing expedition".
5. Viewing child pornography is NOT A VICTIMLESS crime. Viewing this only increases the demand and that means some poor child is being exploited somewhere.
I OBJECT STRONGLY TO MEDIA CIRCUS TRIALS.

I personally know Mr. Hunter. He is an honorable, caring man and a wonderful teacher.
What ever happen to "innocent until proven quilty"? This information should have never been printed in the paper. When people brought to Jesus a woman that was taken in the very act of adultry; He told them that whichever one of them was without sin could cast the first stone. All of her accussers left her. Jesus then spoke to the woman saying, "Neither do I condemn you. Go & sin no more." We need to do the same. God has called us to love one another; not condemn.

I was shocked when I heard about this! I taught with this man and he was always a gentleman and the kids loved him. I truly believe he never did harm to any of the kids he taught and I hope that whatever really did happen, the truth will come out and he will get the help that he needs.

In another newspaper, it states Hunter "downloaded two child pornography videos to the hard drive." They didn't put him in jail until this was checked out. Is this what a honorable, caring man and a wonderful teacher does in his spare time? I don't think so.
Also, if Hunter is so innocent, why did he use someone else's card to log onto the library computer?
Before you continue to feel so sorry for this man, you should know his "Defense attorney Kevin Adams said the case was resolved under a statute that does not require sex-offender registration. The outcome gives Hunter a felony conviction," and "he will not be able to teach again." At least for 10 years in Oklahoma!
Maybe he will or will not teach again. In most cases, the schools just "pass the trash."
If you don't think this is true, then you do not read the newspaper or watch the TV news often enough.
If anyone can come up with a copy of all Oklahoma teachers that have lost their teaching licenses for offenses just this year alone, I would like to see it. In most cases, the schools just "pass the trash." If you don't think this is true, then you do not read the newspaper or watch the news often enough.
Save your sympathies for the children who are harmed and live with the hurt the rest of their lives.
