DHS Director investigated after child injured
By Associated Press

OKLAHOMA CITY -- The head of the state agency that investigates child welfare complaints is under investigation himself after his son was burned on a family trip.
Howard Hendrick, director of the Department of Human Services, confirmed the investigation Tuesday and said he is cooperating fully with authorities. The state attorney general is investigating.
"I would love it if I had been the one burned," Hendrick said.
His 13-year-old son was injured while they were burning brush at a lake house over the Fourth of July. The investigation apparently stems from an allegation that Hendrick didn't promptly seek emergency medical treatment. Hendrick said they were in a remote area about 45 miles from the nearest hospital when the accident happened.
"I actually called immediately and talked to a doctor - within an hour of the event I talked to a doctor," Hendrick said. The teen was taken to see a doctor the following morning, Hendrick said.
"He's doing well," Hendrick said. "I think he will fully recover."
Hendrick declined to discuss details about how the accident happened or to describe the extent of his son's injuries. "I don't want to comment on an open investigation," he said.
Hendrick said it's his understanding that the complaint against him was anonymous. His agency normally investigates child welfare complaints, but because the investigation involves him, it was referred to Oklahoma Attorney General Drew Edmondson.

Sounds like a political investigation, what a waste of tax money.

Nice to see how fast they are to investigate this tip. What about a daycare provider that has a pending charge against her and then more complaints continue to come and they took their time. This is a total waste of money. Please investigate where there really is a problem.

Finally our tax dollars at work. DHS is finally being held to a higher standard. Maybe now they will get off their butts and work for a living like the rest of us. Noone should be above the law. I bet everyone working for DHS is sitting around wondering who the next person in line to get the ax will be.I like the thought of tention being applied. It means better service.

Hopefully this will help DHS discover the subjectivity, inconsistencies & misfindings within its own organization rather than harrassing innocent families & reporting misinformation. I hope things turn out fairly for this family but I also hope the director sees how innocent families are treated poorly & lied to during the investigation process.

From the scanty information supplied in the article it is difficult to comment objectively.
However, so many families comment on the utter disrespect and poor treatment by DHS, that one has to wonder just what are *child protection* agencies do.
I hope the young man does not suffer any permanent scarring or loss of use of his limbs.
Isn't that one of the criteria that DHS uses to assess injuries?
Let's hope the DHS director can abide by the agency rules himself.
Perhaps now he can understand why so many folks are rightly suspicious of such an agency.

I cannot believe that they would actually investigate within their own office,. Was that a misprint or what? You see where they take children out of the home for not getting medical attention immediately, but this one will be ok though. He's one of us an he would never hurt or abuse his child. It's funny how the table turns when it is someone from the DHS office. Bet he doesn't get any charges on him nor his child taken away. But you can bet if that was someone else it would be hell to pay. So what if it was 45 minutes away does that make the problem different. I don't really think so. This will be a waste of all taxpayers money.

Could it be....KARMA? Wake up Oklahoma, over 30 children with D.H.S. involvement have died since 1999, it appears that a D.H.S. supervisor and a D.H.S. lawyer who were found to be liable in a lawsuit regarding one of those deaths are still at D.H.S.,and most caseworkers are not licensed socialworkers.
And as for concerns about taxpayers money why has the media not reported on the Howard Hendricks/D.H.S. case regarding negligence and embezelment,[I sent the info to a couple of reporters]. And did you know that when a child is removed from their home Title IV
federal funding kicks in to support the child in foster care,[and helps fund the D.H.S. budget]. That money comes the Social Security Trust Fund. Then the court may order the parents to pay "child support" to D.H.S. for the childs care, that the federal funds are already paying for. So D.H.S. gets to collect twice per child and keep anything above the actual cost of the childs care.

I like how he felt like "commenting on an open investigation" long enough to tell us he did seek medical attention within 1 hour of injury...yet when pressed for more specifics, he hides and says he doesnt want to comment on an open investigation. Huh? Didnt he just do that?
Futhermore, why in the heck didnt he have his son in the car, on the way to the hospital 45 mins away while on the phone with the dr? Why did he wait almost an hour to even call a doctor if the hospital was so far away? He says he called immediately then corrected himeself by clarifying it was within an hour. Since when is that immediate?! hmmmm...doesnt sound like a witch hunt to me!!!! wake up Oklahoma...our kids are getting neglected by an agency that always seems to never be at fault (look at the OKLAHOMA COMMISSION ON CHILDREN AND YOUTH
OFFICE OF JUVENILE SYSTEM OVERSIGHT complaint log!!!)
