Signs hit at state's new immigration law
The United Front Task Force’s billboard faces west near Memorial Drive. JAMES GIBBARD / Tulsa World

The billboards' sponsors say the intent is to humanize the result of the law for families.
Two billboards along Tulsa's busy stretch of Interstate 44 were unveiled Wednesday to raise awareness of the opposition to Oklahoma's sweeping illegal immigration law that will take effect Nov. 1.
One, sponsored by the United Front Task Force and facing west near Memorial Drive, asks, "Is it OK for Oklahoma to have a law that promotes hate among people?"
The other, sponsored by the American Dream Coalition and facing east near Sheridan Road, features a tearful girl clutching a teddy bear with the statement, "My mommy is not a criminal. She is a hardworking Hispanic woman."
The groups hope the two billboards soon will be followed by many others.
"We want people to know that families will be torn apart by this legislation," said the Rev. Victor Orta II, president of the American Dream Coalition. "I am for the enforcement of our immigration laws, but there needs to be legalization for families who have been here a long time."
The Rev. Luis-Carlos Sanchez of the United Front Task Force said Tulsa was chosen for the billboards over Oklahoma City because of the friction here.
"Unfortunately there's a high-level of discrimination taking place," he said. "People are living in constant fear."
State Rep. Randy Terrill, R-Moore, the author of House Bill 1804, said critics fail to understand the intent of the law.
"This isn't about whether you are for or against immigration, or for or against immigrants," he said. "It doesn't matter what your skin color is or if you speak with an accent.
"What matters is if you are in the country legally or illegally. The only people threatened by House Bill 1804 are those who choose to break the law."
The law will eliminate most taxpayer subsidies for illegal immigrants, allow state and local law enforcement officers to verify immigration statuses of those arrested and crack down on businesses that employ illegal immigrants, among other measures.
Terrill said the two Tulsa billboards will not affect the new law taking effect.
"It doesn't matter if opponents put up two billboards or 200, that won't change the fact that House Bill 1804 is the law and will be enforced beginning Nov. 1," he said.
A "Say No to 1804 Legal Defense Fund" has been established by the United Front Task Force.
Terrill said the law will be defended in court, if necessary.
"I'm 99.9 percent confident that this bill will withstand any legal challenge brought against it," he said.
"House Bill 1804 is not preempted by federal law. It does not exceed the scope of state authority in this area and is designed to sync perfectly with federal immigration law."
Terrill has called for the donors to the fund to be publicly identified.
Sanchez would not disclose the United Front Task Force's funding sources, even concerning the billboard, saying attorneys are reviewing that issue.
In a news release, supporting organizations of the group's billboard were listed as the Coalition of Hispanic Organizations, Jewish Federation of Tulsa and Tulsa Interfaith Alliance.
Also cited were the Tulsa Indian Coalition Against Racism, Islamic Society of Tulsa, Tulsa Metropolitan Ministries, Pastors for Peace, YWCA Tulsa, Tulsa Urban League, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and Oklahomans for Equality.
Representatives of many of those organizations were at the event about the signs.
David Bernstein of the Jewish Federation of Tulsa was one of the speakers at the news conference.
"HB 1804 seems to be designed to make life miserable for thousands of immigrants and promotes mistrust toward all immigrants, including those here legally," he said. "It also fuels racism and discrimination against all Latinos."
Terrill said many of the groups in question are nonprofit and therefore tax-exempt and could be jeopardizing their tax-exempt status by engaging in prohibited political activity.
"These groups are walking a very fine line," he said.
The money for the American Dream Coalition's billboard, amounting to roughly $3,700 to put it up and $1,600 per month thereafter, has been raised over months by individuals and names will be released if legally necessary, Orta said.

The only thing that makes an illegal alien a criminal is his/her conscious choice to arrive or remain illegally within the country. HB1804 would make life miserable for thousands of illegals, in the same way that sexual offender registration laws makes life miserable for sex offenders and some catholic priests who are not too stingent about their vow of celibacy.

Did you see who financing La Raza and many other race groups?
The Federal Government is allowing La Raza access to our money before we are even able to pick up our check and cash it for the money that's left over?
Check out where our tax money is going. The list is at the end of this article.

Sometimes I find it amusing when the people that support the lawlessness try and change the subject from the illegal invasion or illegal aliens and try and interject a new topic like, "Immigration" or “Immigrants”.
We are not the ones stinking up honest immigration! It is the people that support the illegal activity that have set back honest immigration. Possibly for centuries.
They seem to me some pretty hollow spokesmen for any sort of immigration!

14 reasons we all needs to read by the majority of Americans. Then they will have something to yell at their U.S. Congress members.
The Tulsa World will not let us use hyper links so if you want to know the sources and web sites of information i can email it to you.
1. $11 Billion to $22 billion is spent on welfare to illegal aliens each year.
2. $2.2 Billion dollars a year is spent on food assistance programs such as food stamps, WIC, and free school lunches for illegal aliens.
3. $2.5 Billion dollars a year is spent on Medicaid for illegal aliens.
4. $12 Billion dollars a year is spent on primary and secondary school education for children here illegally and they cannot speak a word of English!
*5.* *$17 Billion dollars a year is spent for education for the American-born children of illegal aliens, known as anchor babies.
6. $3 Million Dollars a DAY is spent to incarcerate illegal aliens.
7. 30% percent of all Federal Prison inmates are illegal aliens.
8. $90 Billion Dollars a year is spent on illegal aliens for Welfare & social services by the American taxpayers.
9. $200 Billion Dollars a year in suppressed American wages are caused by the illegal aliens.
10. The illegal aliens in the United States have a crime rate that's two and a half times that of white non-illegal aliens. In particular, their children, are going to make a huge additional crime problem in the US
11. During the year of 2005 there were 4 to 10 MILLION illegal aliens that crossed our Southern Border also, as many as 19,500 illegal aliens from Terrorist Countries. Millions of pounds of drugs, cocaine, meth, heroine and marijuana, crossed into the U. S from the Southern border. Homeland Security
12. The National Policy Institute, "estimated that the total cost of mass deportation would be between $206 and $230 billion or an average cost of between $41 and $46 billion annually over a five year period."
13. In 2006 illegal aliens sent home $45 BILLION in remittances back to their countries of origin.
14. "The Dark Side of Illegal Immigration: Nearly One Million Sex Crimes Committed by Illegal Immigrants In The United States ".
So using the LOWEST estimates, the annual cost OF ILLEGAL ALIENS is $338.3 BILLION DOLLARS A YEAR! So if deporting them costs between $206 and $230 BILLION DOLLARS, Hey get rid of em', We'll be ahead after the 1st year!!!

Oh please - I grow weary of all the "hate", "racism", and "just want a better life" stuff. People who steal and sell drugs "just want a better life" too - no? The bottom line is the LAW. Follow the laws -and there will be no problem. Ignore them or flagrantly break them - while calling everyone a racist will get you no where - or hopefully deported or put in jail(for all the businesses that hire illegals). Close the borders and ENFORCE THE LAWS. What color you are has NOTHING to do with it. Period.

someone should sue victor orta and the rest of the people over these offensive billboards. they are blatant lies. we do not hate hispanics legal or illegal. we just want the illegals to go back and come here legally. i wonder what victor orta would do if everyone broke into his house and wouldn't leave and just lived off victor orta. made him pay for their health insurance, food, and occasionally went out and mowed his lawn for him.

When they can't justify the argument with facts, they always revert to the race card and the hate factor. Americans love immigrants but legal immigrants not illegal ones. This is a matter of the rule of law not about hate. And no they shouldn't get any kind of amnesty because they've been here for a long time. They are criminals and they must face the consequence of their actions. All these billboards will do is further anger legal Americans who believe in the rule of law. Their marches woke the public and these will only do the same thing. As long as they fail to distinguish between legal and illegal, they will continue to anger legal Americans who are tired of picking up the tab for their conscious decisions to violate our laws.

I am glad to see the people, city and states of America finally, starting to address this problem. I don't hate anyone. But laws are laws, if they are no going to be enforced on all them they should no be enforced on any. I don't support anarchy but thats what you get without laws and enforcement. I know the special interest groups will always screem if they don't get thier way. LET THEM SCREAM, ENFORCE THE LAW. I've been to Mexico on vactation - I entered legally - Obeyed the law -and left legally - I would expect nothing less of visitors here. If you wish to reside in the USA obey the law. If the law means nothing to you I hope you live in fear to the instant your caught and Deported. I think the American are motivated to see the immigrantion problen is solved so if your here illegal you may want to go home and come back the right way. Sorry to all the special interest groups who support illegal activity but the times they are a changing.

U.S. Citizens always relate illegal aliens to Mexicans. There are millions of illegal aliens coming in from Africa, Asia, South America, Middle East, Russia, Caribbean, Europe and Canada. China sends criminal illegal aliens by the thousands to enter the U.S. The Chinese government only allow >650 back per year. We need to build prisons in Mexico and hire the Mexican Government to house all criminals. When a U.S. citizen break the laws and are convicted ship them to Mexico were they forfeit all the rights of a U.S. citizen. Watch our crime rate drop and jobs for Mexico.

Why is it a secret of who is financing the signs?
Who are the supporting organizations that are backing them? I am an American Indian! What the H#LL is Tulsa Indian Coalition Against Racism? Who are they? Never heard of them. How many members are there and what tribes? Our tribe votes for support and organizations formed, as all tribes do. Is this a couple of 1/65288% Want-To-Be American Indians? Oklahoma...don't ever give up the fight to save your state from this invasion.
Americans are not racist because we want our laws enforced.
If anyone is racist, it is the Hispanic organizations like LaRaza, Lulac, Mecha and the united front task force.
Americans are waking up.
I applaud every time there is an ICE raid. Why feel sorry for some illegal alien who gets deported? They made the decision to come here illegally, they made the decision to have babies here. Now they cry that families are being torn apart. WHATEVER! When american citizens break the law, they go to jail and their families are torn apart. Nobody feels sorry for them either.

I support Victor Orca and the American Dream Coalition. I'm above the law, as well. You see, I like to drive 100 mph in school zones. Now, my kid knows his daddy is not a criminal. I'm just a hard-working man with a lead foot. Having to slow down in school zones restricts my ability to get to work on time. Also, following Vic's logic, school zone speeding laws must promote hatred of ALL drivers, right? So I want a billboard too. Who do I call?

HB 1804 was directed towards hispanics. These is by a well known source that works at he OKC capital. These is what the protest is about. When Okies are mis-informed it creates resentment towards a particular group. Undocumented workers also pay taxes. The taxes collected pays for 30 police officers annual salaries. When a group is marginalized it sort of give others the right to abuse them and mistreat them. That needs to prevented at all cost. We don't want another "Trail of Tears". Indians were not citizens either, they were just here and were force to live their lands because the white europeans were not comfortable with them, so they forcefully moved them out of site. HB1804 promotes division.

What Americans really need, especially all of you that have commented here, is to be educated on the current immigration (legal) process and how extremely difficult and costly it is. We need immigration reform desperately. I'm by no means for illegal immigration, but as someone who has gone through the immigration process legally for my spouse, I can fully understand why it is tempting to go around that process. It took years, took time off work to travel for multiple interviews, required legal help to simply understand the forms (even though we are both well educated), and cost close to $2000 for the fees to the US gov alone. On top of all that, often the immigration department employees were very demeaning to us, without cause. I was humbled by the commitment my spouse had to make to become a U.S. citizen – you have to prove your moral character, your financial stability, and pledge allegiance to the country including fighting for the country if called upon. If only all of us that were born here had to consciously make those commitments and go through a citizenship process, I think we’d have greater appreciation for what it means to be a U.S. citizen and for what the people of foreign birth go through to be citizens. Educate yourselves, people, and call for reform that makes our country stronger by lifting us all to a higher standard.

nn, quit comparing illegal aliens to American Indians. It is an ignorant argument and has no ground.
Illegals pay taxes that pay our police officers' salaries? That is a LIE! Taxes paid for groceries and supplies from Wal Mart do NOT pay our law enforcement's salaries. Illegal aliens (NOT undocumented immigrants) do NOT pay property tax or income tax. Most work for cash and if they do get a paycheck they are using false identification. That is a fact. Americans know this and we are sick and tired of it.
You point out the fact that this bill is directed toward hispanics. Did you ever stop to think that the reason is because the hispanics are out there waving their mexican rag in our streets, marching and demanding the same rights that US citizens have? I don't see illegal chinese, russian, african etc. people out there in our streets causing problems. So yes, the focus is mainly on hispanics who refuse to learn english, refuse to assimilate, refuse to embrace America and the laws we have. Instead these illegal aliens from latin countries scream racism, whine that their families are torn apart and how they're so poor and abused. Meanwhile, they are sending untaxed money home from their under-the-table day labor jobs. their children eat free breakfast/lunch at our public schools and get a free education. these same hispanic illegal aliens clog up our emergency rooms and NEVER pay the bill. they just give a false name and address.
Americans are MAD, make no mistake about it.

As an immigrant who used to prepare amnesty and other immigration applications, I would like to urge sponsors of those billboards and other open border advocates to heed the following:
On 7/7/06, Mexican American professor Armando Navarro, who has worked closely with the Mexican government to fight all measures to secure our borders, was quoted in the Los Angeles Times as saying, "A new majority is forming. Everything will change. The White House will be within our reach..."
In 1997, Ernest Zedillo, then-president of Mexico, declared in Chicago: “I have proudly affirmed that the Mexican nation extends beyond the territory enclosed by its borders and that Mexican migrants are an important -- a very important -- part of it."
Congressman Howard Berman, a champion for mass immigration, was quoted in the L.A. Times on Oct 2, 2001 as being "very disappointed" by MALDEF which sued over redistricting. MALDEF (Mexican American Legal Defense & Educational Fund) claimed that the redistricting in California favored keeping white incumbents in power. Here is Berman's quote: "For 30 years in public office, I have not merely voted for, but have led the legislative battles to enact issues of importance to the Latino community," he said. "I guess for MALDEF, it's more about skin color and ethnicity than the philosophy and the quality of representation."
According to the 2000 Census, the U.S. population had increased by about 13 percent since 1990, but those who identified themselves as Mexican had grown by 53 percent. What would happen i this trend continues? Although many Mexican Americans are patriotic, during last year's massive demonstrations, many protesters waved Mexican flags and pressured the U.S. with demands identical to Mexico's.
If another amnesty is granted, millions of legalized aliens will become potential voters. They could add within years tens of millions of additional U.S. and foreign-born relatives to the U.S. who could become potential voters (and who will consume energy, need education, health care, welfare, etc. that any taxes that most will pay will not cover due to their low incomes). Even if most newly naturalized citizens do not vote, is there a chance that our immigration laws will be seriously enforced? Mexico has fought all U.S. measures to secure our borders and has actively encouraged illegal migration to the U.S. What is Mexico's real intent?
Sincerely,
Yeh Ling-Ling

First and foremost, illegal aliens are not only from Mexico and other "southern countries." They are from a variation of countries including the Middle East. Our government's concern is to protect us from terrorism, and this is one way of doing it for US citizens. If not, do what is best for our state and country. I am "flattered," for lack of a better word, that the USA has been selected by these folks to live here. However, I agree their immigration should be done legally.
