Workout: CrossFit Tulsa, 7709 E. 42nd Place, Suite 118.

What it is: A strength and conditioning system built on constantly varied functional movements executed at high intensity. See photos and video at www.tulsaworld.com/crossfit.

When you can go: 6, 7, 8 a.m. and 4, 5, 6 p.m. Monday-Friday; 11 a.m. Saturday; 1 p.m. Sunday. Cost is $150 per month for unlimited classes, drop-in single classes are $15, and one-on-one personal training is $50 per session. There are discounts for additional family members, and active law enforcement officers, firefighters and military get a 50 percent discount.

It’s best for: People who want to push themselves or transform their body, serious athletes who want real results or want to work out like a Navy SEAL (CrossFit is the SEALs’ workout program of choice).

Gear needed: Workout clothes, water, vomit bag (only slightly kidding - there is a note on the board inside the gym that says “please puke outside.”)

Degree of difficulty: 4 on a scale of 1 to 4 sneakers

Degree of fun: 2 on a scale of 1 to 4 sneakers

Fitness Guinea Pig says: After you saw Gerald Butler’s abs in the movie “300,” did you wish you could be ripped like a Spartan warrior? Head to CrossFit, where if you think you’re tough, you’ll likely be squashed like a bug by your first workout. Their motto: “Our warmup is other people’s workout.” FGP discovered this was quite true. No wonder Mark Twight, who trained the cast of “300” at his Gym Jones in Salt Lake City, based much of his training methods on the CrossFit program.

Eric Barber has an extensive background as a personal trainer, and he was thinking about opening a local CrossFit branch when he heard Tulsa Police Sgt. Brandon Wykoff and some friends had started one in someone’s garage. They joined forces, found a bigger garage near an old Wal-Mart, and now Tulsans can suffer through kettlebell swinging, pull-ups, push-ups, medicine ball throws, ring dips and box jumps just like the legions of CrossFit fanatics in California.

This is strictly a no-frills garage gym - there’s not even central air conditioning. Hey, if they pampered your princess tush, it wouldn’t be much of a Spartan warrior workout, would it? But the trainers are nice, and you can work at your own level. There’s something benevolent about the fact that CrossFit gyms put so many of their workout routines and exercise demos online for anyone to try for free. Or maybe they’re just daring you to try it.

Is there a workout or exercise you want the Fitness Guinea Pig to try first? Send suggestions to cary.aspinwall@tulsaworld.com or call 581-8477.
