No. 2 Union beats No. 1 Jenks 43-42 in overtime
Union running back Jeremy Smith tries to break away from Jenks defenders Zac Bertelli (55) and Jacob Broom, bottom left, during their game Friday night at Chapman Stadium. Stephen Pingry/Tulsa World

High School Sports Extra:
For the latest scores, stories, photos and stats, as well as sites dedicated to the Tulsa Metro teams.
Union tailback Jeremy Smith and quarterback Brandon Rogers helped write another amazing chapter in the Redskins-Jenks football rivalry on Friday night at the University of Tulsa's Chapman Stadium.
Smith rushed for 171 yards, including an overtime touchdown of 5 yards that was followed by the decisive extra-point kick by Tress Way to lift No. 2 Union over top-ranked Jenks 43-42 before a crowd of 20,578 in a battle of teams that have combined to win the last 11 Class 6A state titles.
Union sent the game into overtime tied at 36 on a 13-yard touchdown pass from Rogers to Tracy Moore and Way's extra-point with 17 seconds left in regulation. That completed a seven-play, 69-yard drive.
Jenks had just regained the lead, 36-29, with 1:37 left on Chris Adkins' 62-yard TD run and Ginther's two-point pass to Tramaine Thompson.
In the OT, Ginther fired a 4-yard TD pass to Dallas Beeler on fourth down to put the Trojans ahead 42-36, but a poor snap led to Caleb Pearson blocking the conversion kick.
"I knew when they missed the extra point that we were going to knock it in," said Smith. "I didn't ask for the ball, but I wanted it. This is a super feeling. It was a great game."
The high-scoring affair was quite a contrast to last year's Backyard Bowl, won by Jenks 9-6.
Jenks (1-1) had won the last three previous regular-season meetings against Union (2-0).
Rogers completed 15-of-21 passes for 168 yards and three TDs, and also had a 1-yard TD run.
His counterpart, Ginther, was 17-of-22 for 287 yards and four TDs.
Adkins had 32 carries for 208 yards and two TDs.
Jenks, which jumped to an early 14-3 lead, took a 20-9 advantage into the fourth quarter. The teams combined for 43 points during the final period of regulation.
Way's kicking kept Union in the game during the first half. Way booted a 47-yard field goal to open the scoring. He also had punts of 49 and 74 yards.
Jenks took a 7-3 lead in the first quarter's final minute. Ginther, after a play-fake, passed to an open Tramaine Thompson deep over-the-middle for a 30-yard touchdown. That capped a nine-play, 80-yard drive.
The Trojans dominated most of the second quarter. On his second TD pass of the night, Ginther scrambled to his left and was dangerously close to being over the line of scrimmage at the Union 20 when he fired to Dallas Beeler, who used his three-inch height advantage to pull down the pass over cornerback Caleb Pearson at the goal line. Matt Perry kicked his second extra point to increase Jenks' lead to 14-3 with 7:06 left in the first half.
After a roughing the punter penalty, Jenks appeared set to break the game open in the half's final seconds. On a first down at the Union 35, Mitch Williams blindsided Ginther, the ball popped in the air and defensive lineman Stephen Ruempolhamer rumbled 62 yards for a TD with 28 seconds left.
Rogers, however, was sacked trying to pass for the two-point conversion and Jenks took a 14-9 lead into intermission.

This is the best rivalry game in the nation. You can't beat it. What a game, as usual. Union has beaten one of the best teams in Ohio and one of the best teams in Oklahoma to start their season...amazing as usual.

Man, I certainly hope the first post guy stays in "skool" and takes some English composition.
"wuz", "i ever seen", "skool", "i been goin"...nothing says, "I'm an idiot!" more than spelling like one.
It isn't cool (not KOOL or KUL) to spell like you're stupid.
You're an embarrassment to the entire state school system and the nation.

Way to go Coach Fridrich (Kirk)! I've known him since he was a kid and am so proud to see him coaching at this level with so much success. Union should be in the top 5 in the nation now!

This was a great game guys, dont get me wrong. An excellent finish. But i fail to see how this game is getting national attention. I was watching MIDWEST High School Scoreboard and they showed scores from Texas, Lousiana, even a couple from Kansas, but none from Oklahoma. I googled up "Biggest high school rivalries couldnt find anything from Jenks vs Union, i got things like McKinley and Williamson or something like that. I know NFL networks was down here doing a quick documentary of it, but this isnt the 1st time that we had a national TV show come down here, the North Side Classic a couple years back (Booker T. vs McLain) was mentioned on BET. That didnt mean that this rivalry was just going to be super bowled hyped over the nation. And i've been to Texas during high school season and 99% of the people who never lived in OK really didnt know or really didnt care about any Jenks or Union, this game isnt mentioned in the USA today under all the other high school game scores they show. So wheres the national attention? WELL DONE UNION GREAT GAME BOTH!!!

you need to have your google checked. Unless you dont count scout or rivals as national attention. Both of them mentioned the game and said it was probably the best rivalry in the nation. Dont just make up some percentage of people like 99%. Did you do a real poll or did you ask two people you knew? How many people in oklahoma or even Texas know about the best Texas rivalry? Union has been covered two weeks in a row on national tv coverage. So get over yourself
Great game... go skins!

i thought that it was all about putting the best players on the field what happened to #15
randy stanley the cornerback?he was the leader
for the defensive charge in the canton ohio game and know they put a player out that gets
burned in practice all the time and plays hurt
when he messes up in the game whats up with that?randy stanley got an interception a fumble recovery and numerous of tackles in the canton game, that was one of ohios top ranked teams. i say if its not broke why try
to fix it.i think the defense chemistry was all broken up.

Hmm....you point to rivals and scouts, those 2 combined dont have as much national say as the usatoday does, and according to the usatoday the GAME OF THE WEEK! also the game that will be aired LIVE on NATIONAL TV is...1st Cincinnati St. Xavier vs. Cleveland Glenville 2nd is Wichita East (KAN) vs Dodge City (KAN), if Jenks vs Union is the best high school rivalry in the nation why doesnt it get attention from the MOST looked at site for high school football scores/info, who is home of the BIGGEST high school pole? and on the usatoday besides where it shows the rankings (Jenks and Union both ranked) it doesnt say anything else about them, almost like they dont care. Now thats weird if this was the biggest high school rivalry in the nation isnt it....

how many games were there this week in HS across the nation? they had to pick one or two. And that is not what you said you said you found NOTHING on google about the rivalry. I simply stated that well known sites rivals and scout. Not debating on whether usa today is bigger or not. Did their games of the week have 2 teams from the top 25? And maybey the could not show the game because NFL network already had the rights. So why show attention to a game that your competitor is going to be broadcasting.
Point is Union vs Jenks is usually the best game of the season with 20K+ watching each time they play

Dont get to cocky Union fans, dont forget if you know anything about football you would have saw that Jenks and Union down in double digits in the 4th quarter....now you Union fans are propably thinking "well it showed that we never give up and we fought are way back" but to blow a double digit lead in the 4th is not top ranked football (like Jenks is) they made some mistakes that if it was week 8 in the season they wouldnt make, this is a big morale victory but it ONLY week 2, just cause you win this doesnt gurantee a play-off spot or a Champinship. Besides the rivalry between these 2 this game is no district game, wont hurt any of these 2 schools chances ot make the play-offs. So dont go saying your the champs when its ONLY week 2 in a game (in play-off race) means nothing. And if you think that Jenks cant beat Union re-watch the game and see how many mistakes they made in the 4th, i GURANTEE Trimble will make sure they NEVER blow another 4th quarter lead the rest of the year. So Jenks fans stop crying cause you still have a full season to play, and your team is in good hands with Trimble, and Union fans calm down cause its only week 2 (but you guys have a good team aswell.)
