"My Internet Freedoms" is the theme of an essay contest for high school and college students.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- A top prize of $300 is being offered by FOI Oklahoma to state high school and undergraduate college students for the winning entry in the organization's annual First Amendment Congress Essay Contest.

Other prizes from this year's theme of "My Internet Freedoms" include $200 for second place and $100 for third place.

The contest is divided between high school and undergraduate college students. The cash prizes will be awarded to first, second and third in each category.

Entries should discuss what a person's rights should be, as well as any possible consequences, when exercising freedom of speech in cyberspace.

Is information posted on Web sites, blogs, Facebook, MySpace and open forums protected under the First Amendment? What about text messaging? What responsibilities do people have when posting information on the Web?

Students are encouraged to do factual research and to write creatively and personally instead of simply writing a report.

Entries should be about 500 words, typed double-spaced. Entries should include the person's name, school, mailing address, contact phone number and an e-mail address if one is available.

They should be sent no later than 5 p.m. Oct. 15 by e-mail, mail or fax to Kim Moyer, The Oklahoman, P.O. Box 25125, Oklahoma City, OK 73125, Attn: Kim

Moyer. Fax to (405) 475-3183 or e-mail kmoyer@oklahoman.com

Winners will be recognized and receive their prizes during the ninth annual First Amendment Congress Oct. 31-Nov. 1.

Freedom of Information Oklahoma was founded in 1990 as a statewide organization to educate the public about FOI issues. It actively supports those organizations and individuals working to open records or provide access to meetings illegally closed.
