With a new state law on illegal immi- gration looming, pan- elists weigh its effects.

With less than two months until Oklahoma's new immigration law takes effect, four panelists tried to answer questions Monday night about the past and future of illegal immigration in the United States.

House Bill 1804 is set to take effect Nov. 1. Among other things, it will end most public assistance for illegal immigrants, authorize state and local law enforcement officials to enforce federal immigration law, penalize employers for knowingly hiring illegal immigrants, and penalize anyone who knowingly transports or harbors illegal immigrants.

About 100 people attended Monday's panel discussion, titled "Is America Still a Melting Pot?" Held at All Souls Unitarian Church, it was sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Metropolitan Tulsa, the Oklahoma Conference for Community and Justice, and the Tulsa Metropolitan Ministry.

As an attorney who specializes in immigration law and a recently naturalized U.S. citizen from England, panelist Campbell Cooke said he is neither for nor against HB 1804. However, he understands how it affects others, he said.

"I have employers coming to me saying they can't find workers because we have a labor force fleeing Oklahoma and moving to New Mexico, Missouri or Canada," Cooke said.

"We have an ever-diminishing pool of talented workers, so companies will either close or move offshore."

Panelist Elizabeth McCormick, a University of Tulsa associate professor of law, said that although much of the illegal immigration is being attributed to Hispanic people, history shows that this was not always the case in the United States.

Italian, French and Chinese immigrants are among those targeted in the past, she said.

"I'm not in favor of illegal immigration, and I think we need a solution," McCormick said. "It's about recognizing that this is a problem that will not go away if we don't change and don't address it."

Panelist Maria Palacios, vice chairwoman of the Tulsa Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, said it is difficult to speak out on the issue. She said that although she supports secure borders and wants fair immigration reform, it is sometimes difficult to see and hear the comments some Tulsans have aimed at Hispanics in the wake of HB 1804's passage.

"I have been living here for 27 years, and I have never felt as such a foreigner and such an alien as I do today," said Palacios, who originally is from Venezuela. "It is sickening to read their comments that our little Tulsa, beautiful Tulsa, is becoming a Nazi Germany. That's what I call it."

Another panelist, Rep. Jeannie McDaniel, D-Tulsa, said the solution will come not from HB 1804 but from everyone contributing ideas toward the common goal of easing legal immigration and safe border control.

McDaniel said she voted for an earlier version of HB 1804 because it focused on employers but later voted against the revised bill, which she said focuses on people who cannot defend themselves.

"I think my grandchildren deserve to live in a world without hate," she said. "I oppose House Bill 1804 because I think we can do better, and with your help I know we can do better."

I dont want Illegal Aliens to get public assistance. Who do they think they are anyway. Our elderly folks are living at poverty level and well deserve more. We need to give them more instead of a bunch of Illegals. I think throwing scraps at our elderly is really discusting. The law enforcement should be doing their jobs. That is what we pay them for. Illegals shouldnt be above the law. Talk about RACISTS. If they dont belong in America load them on the bus and get them out of here. They dont hesitate to take action against an american who breaks the law now do they! What is wrong with american employers. Why in the heck are they not hiring americans and immigrants here legally? They should be penalized or out of business. Rediculous.

Harboring a criminals is against the law in any state in this country. Once again I ask why have we allowed this to go on for as long as we have. We cant hide or transport american criminals why in the world should we be able to hide and transport illegal criminals? If they arent here legally, load them on the bus and get them out of our country. Once again, RACISTS against our own people. You bleeding hearts who think we should support Illegal activity need to get a life and figure out who you are or move with the illegals and fight in their country for their rights. Enough is Enough.

Yes! there the bigots go again! Pb, Illegal aliens DO NOT qualify for public assistance. At least educate yourself on the issue before you talk! The elderly deserve everything good! The fact they are not taken care of properly is not because of the illegal aliens, it is because our state and legislature DO NOT do the right thing! Don't confuse things little PB. Your ignorance is embarrassing!

Well another article in the paper is telling about yet another drunk third world illegal alien running down a child. They have no respect for our laws or our nation and children. I am not a bigot. I am a law abiding citizen and want to encourage the laws of the land to make this a better, safer place for our children. If you had any pride at all you would too. But what do you care if they destroy all america stands for.

what he failed to say was "employers are coming to him saying they can't find cheap labor". there are plenty of talented people to choose from, just not wanting to work for 5.00 and hour. they would also have to file taxes for these workers because they actually have a social security card, and one that is valid.

MC

If you are as educated as you imply, why lower yourself to name calling? ie--BIGOT.

Every American, especially blue collar workers like myself must worry about their jobs and their own futures, now that illegal are replacing them.

I know, roofing guys that cannot compete against illegal labor, Landscapers, yard crews, on and on.

Why these illegals may not affect you directly

they do affect many around you!

Tony, I do empathize with your comment and your worries, and I hear that often, but I also hear that there are plenty of blue collar jobs for everyone, and it is the employer who is actually bringing the foreign nationals to work because there are not enough people to work those jobs. Your concern is valid and that is why there needs to be immigration reform. But what is sickening to me is that this has released a tremendous amount of prejudice and racism that is not necessary/ Debating the immigration issue is one thing, doing it within the context of racism and bigotry is another.

MC I am not a racist. As I have told many others, I am about 1/3 hispanic. My ancestors lived in NM when it was annexed by the us in the 1800's. I disagree with you on the public assistance issue. Medical is assistance and I do know of families getting public assistance. I just want a controlled release of immigrants. Legally. Why do we want this country overrun with people who initially come here illegally. They show no respect for the laws in america. This is hurting us and our children. We cannot and should not allow them to overrun us with a third world mind set. They need to come here in a controlled structured manner and be will to co exist with us. Most of them cannot even communicate with us. Do you realize how many americans have been sued in our own legal system by illegal aliens? Do you have any clue how many public defenders defend illegal aliens in court? I consider this a part of public assistance also. Call me what you want but I am of hispanic decent but I am an american citizen and see what is happening here. They have all the rights. It is racist for them to be above the laws. I know we need immigration reform but the feds wont deal with it. Someone has to.

HEY dont listen to PM his 1/3 hispanic from the 1800"s SO WATERED down. I'm ashamed for the Hispanic people that have to put up with people like him. Trying to justify his racisicm, FYI PM your the worst type of racist. Just cuz your 1/2 Hispanic doesnt mean you cant be racial.

I do hope they pass some type of reform. Maybe the companies can sponsor their workers. The kids can get an education or join our Military.

Got to go to work now.

pb, do you know how many Americans have been sued in our own legal system by illegal aliens? Do you have any clue how many public defenders defend illegal aliens in court? Until you have hard numbers and FACTS to support your comments, please stick to the case at point. There needs to be immigration reform. I don't believe anybody is arguing against that, but it needs to be done in a humane way. And, there is a labor shortage in Tulsa for skilled labor. I know of companies that are willing to pay $15/hour, but they can't keep workers for more than a day or two. This country has been built on illegal immigration, but the nastiness and total lack of human rights in the arguments I hear are appalling and make me wonder why would anybody want to come to America in the first place - legally or illegally.

J, Yes I have an idea of how many people have been sued by checking the OSCN legal research website when they have illegal alien stories. I was also sued by a family of illegal aliens when my daughter bumped into a suv at a stop light. It didnt even damage either vehicle, but yet they claim they all had back injuries. Fortunately for me it was dismissed due to lack of damage to either vehicle. So I can safely say I have researched the issue somewhat. I am not racist. I only feel our country is being unfair when it comes to laws that allow someone to do things illegally with no ramifications. American people cannot do this. Why can Illegal Aliens. I have nothing against immigration as long as they do it using the procedures in place. Immigration is very welcome. Sneaking in, Lying, breaking laws of the land and trying to force a country to let them in cause they want is just not good enough for me. Many immigrants wait for years to enter this country and become proud citizens eventually. They have earned the right to be here and also they have earned the right for us to force everyone to follow that same procedure.

Paul is correct; it’s about obeying the laws, not racism. If immigrants want to come and be a part of our country then they need to be become citizens. Living in this country they are receiving the fruits of it and should also share in paying their share of them. Immigrants drive on our streets, attend schools, receive police protection and receive medical attention just to name a few. The only thing that is asked of the immigrants is to become citizens of this country they want to reap the benefits of. Those benefits that so many Americans fought and died for. That is not an unreasonable request.

As far as the employment issue, why wouldn’t an employer want cheap help and of course cheaper taxes? They need to be held accountable also. Is that too much to ask of them? There are so many Americans who could work but don’t and receive public assistance because it is easier but that is another issue.

People who live in this country must obey the laws of it. If they don’t like the laws then you vote to change them. But in order to do that, you have to be a citizen.

Bottom line: Republican's racism on immigration will cost them dearly next year. Their message was clear: if you are not white-anglo-saxon-protestant, we don't want your vote. They are fighting a losing battle: it is called demographics; America is no longer a "good'ole'boy" America from the 50s and 60s. Get over it. Legalization of the illegals is a matter of when, not whether.

John, They mostly want to work and send money home to their families. It is easier to jump the border than wait in line for a green card. They can come to america at will work and then send money home. Of course they know the legal system wont do anything about it either. Some of them may want to be here legally but they want what they want now not later when we allow them here using a visa or green card. In my opinion the ones who want to become citizens are in line waiting to be eligible following procedures in place to do so.
