Dining Out: Cashing In

More than 20 restaurants have opened in Owasso in the last two years. Developers are banking that continued growth in the area will draw customers from Tulsa and elsewhere. JAMES GIBBARD / Tulsa World

Owasso filling up on new restaurants: The opening of a shopping center two years ago has produced several eateries in the city.

OWASSO -- From baked ziti to gourmet hamburgers, this city is dishing out variety when it comes to cuisine.

At least 20 restaurants have opened in the city in the past two years, and the list of eateries keeps growing, said Rickey Hayes, the city's director of economic development.

Logan's Roadhouse, Steak 'n Shake, Lone Star Steakhouse and Saloon, and Chick-fil-A are among the recent arrivals. Workers are trying to finish two more links to national chains -- Cracker Barrel and IHOP -- before the Thanksgiving holiday, Hayes said.

It is an old blueprint but a relatively new phenomenon, boosted by the debut of a $55 million-plus retail center, Smith Farm Marketplace, in the fall of 2005.

"It's kind of a progressive unfolding that's been in place here for 20 years," Hayes said. "That is residential growth, good safe community, great schools, quality health care."

These factors have propelled the suburb of about 25,000 people into a regional destination point for retailers, Hayes said. He estimated that 70 percent of retail sales in the city come from non-residents.

On any given Friday night, people from Tulsa, Broken Arrow, Skiatook, Collinsville, Claremore, Oologah and Kansas are in the city's restaurants, he said.

About two-thirds of Owasso residents work in Tulsa, Hayes said. But Owasso benefits from having three major employment districts -- Cherokee Industrial Park, Tulsa International Airport and the Port of Catoosa -- just a few miles away.

"Even though 65 percent of our population works in Tulsa, a lot of Tulsa comes to Owasso to have lunch," Hayes said. "It's been a good thing for us."

Locally and regionally owned restaurants such as Napoli's Italian Restaurant and Arris' Pizza have found niches in Owasso. On a larger scale, Delta Cafe and Olive Garden restaurants could arrive soon, Hayes said.

Businesses looking for new sites pay attention to what a city has been able to do -- and what it plans to do, Hayes said. One attention-getter is Stone Canyon, a 3,300-acre development just southeast of town that could have 1,800 to 2,100 homes over the next 15 to 18 years.

"When you announce a subdivision like Stone Canyon, with thousands of single-family dwellings, it lights them up," Hayes said.

Although city officials are shifting to a job-creation focus, they are not worried about saturating the restaurant market. Evidence has shown that additional choices typically increase the volume for everyone, Hayes said.

Sherry Bishop, the assistant city manager for administrative services, said Owasso's sales-tax base has increased 50 percent, from $10 million to $15 million, in the past three years.

Hayes said: "What we're looking for is an upscale restaurant. That's what we're missing.

"I think the first upscale restaurant that gets here is really going to be good."

Oh, yeah -- more chain restaurants. This makes me want to stay away from Owasso. Do Owasso residents simply not appreciate good food? Are they simply acquiescing in the ruin of the community? Why can a growing community not support local business?

Dont you get it?? Owasso is firmly on track to become an exclusive social mecca! We came out here to get away from your slacked jaws, and gangs. Sorry Tulsa, but your elitist attitude and your "Chapman stadium" will be your downfall.

AM is typical of the people who use a Thesarus well. And in answer to your questions

no and no. Maybe you can be a little more specific in why you think Owasso cannot support local business. We have many unique shops and resturants in the area. Maybe you just can't leave your little neighborhood and and take a look Owasso. AM is just typical of outsider paper surfers looking into the Tulsa World for what they wish to be real.

Don't be jealous because the suburbs are growing and property values are rising. You still have time to unload your stale property in oil-town and move up to the 'burbs.

EJ.. Apparently you have not drove by the high school in the am or pm or been to Walmart. If so you would see that Owassoans are already as fat if not fatter than Tulsan's.

Oh, now. Owasso has a nice YMCA and several clean parks to walk in, exercise at and bring your kids to. And neither the YMCA or the parks contain smelly beggers or murderous muggers. I think we'll be OK.

The amount of Walmart's Tulsa has has nothing to do with fat people. Tulsa has an increased population vs. Owasso's small community so naturally there are more Walmart's, duh. I have been to Owasso and have to agree with Jenny, I see more fat people around there than I do in Tulsa.

Ya'll are making me laugh. I think it's good that Owasso is growing, it's good they are having chains move in, but also good that they still have many of their own local shops.

There are a lot of fat people at Walmart though....

The small local shops will begin to disappear with all the large corporate stores moving in.

Owasso is a great community, and is actually about to double in size. It does not have many locally owned restaurants, but there are many locally owned businesses. Its my favorite suburb of Tulsa. However, living in the burbs is not my cup of tea. The majority of people in Owasso work in Tulsa, that is what suburbanites tend to forget when they dis Ttown. BA is really bad about their middle child syndrome. Congratulations to the OWasso Chamber of commerce, their police, and their army of fast food working teenagers.

I am not sure what Owasso is complaining about, it would be nice if some of those restaurants where in Sapulpa, or the westside of tulsa so we wouldn't have to go into Tulsa at all. You guys have it all and you are complaining?

Just can't figure out why all these chain restaurants are a good thing...? Not trying to be snobby. I don't eat at chains at all and I live in Tulsa where there are plenty of them. I wish there were more locally owned restaurants so more of the money stays here. For the record, I also try to avoid Wal-Marts and the like. And I often go out of town for good food, but apparenty won't be going to Owasso anytime soon!

Owasso is for white trash that can't afford to live in Tulsa. No matter how nice they try to make it, it's still going to be OWasso, a town in the middle of no where.

I see no variety here, in Owasso's restaurants. Why is this tripe considered news? I feel sorry for them, just another prairie town with fatty food.

Are you kidding? Can't afford to live in Tulsa? Why would I move into a filthy bum-town with a soaring crime rate and a brown river? Take a look at local realty websites. Property values in Tulsa aren't even comparible to the suburbs.
