SAN ANTONIO — Bill Sherman, religion writer for the Tulsa World, won second place in a national writing and reporting contest sponsored by the Religion Newswriters Association, an organization for journalists who cover religion in the secular media.

Sherman entered the 2007 Cornell Award contest, recognizing the top religion writers at mid-sized newspapers. Entrants submitted five articles written during 2006.

He received the award Saturday night at a banquet held during the Religion Newswriters Association annual convention here.

He has been with the Tulsa World since 1983 and has been covering religion full-time for seven years. The nonprofit trade association was founded in 1949 to advance the professional standards of religion reporting in the secular press.

The first-place winner was G. Jeffrey MacDonald of the Christian Science Monitor.
