FORT SILL -- Officials at Fort Sill have identified a soldier killed in a basic training incident as Pvt. Daniel Patrick Fisher, 19, of Bassett, Va.

Fisher, a member of Alpha Battery, 1st Battalion, 40th Field Artillery, died Thursday after being accidentally shot by a machine gun during a training exercise, according to a release from Fort Sill's Public Affairs Office.

The release says Fisher was training on the loading and unloading of an M-2 machine gun when the weapon discharged, striking him about 3 p.m. Thursday. He was taken to the Troop Medical Clinic then transported to Comanche County Memorial Hospital in Lawton where he was pronounced dead.

The Army is investigating the incident to determine how it occurred and how to prevent a similar accident from happening again, said Maj. Gen. Peter M. Vangjel, commanding general of the U.S. Army Fires Center of Excellence at Fort Sill.

Col. Annie Baker, commander of the 434th Field Artillery Brigade which conducts basic training, has ordered a safety stand-down in which all training is stopped to focus on training standards and procedures.

I was recalled from retirement from the period of September 2006 to April 2007 and worked at the 434th Brigade as the safety officer. I was appalled to see the mountains of paperwork needed for training but few of the cadre actually would work at physically checking the training. This was an accident waiting to happen, Colonel Baker worried more about paperwork than real safety. Since I'm not in the active duty army I can speak my mind.

I am ex-military from Martinsville, VA . . . which is about 10 miles from Bassett where this soldier was from. I have a 19 year old daughter and I can not imagine enduring what this family is having to endure. While I know there is nothing that can be said that can bring you comfort now, just know this young man's spirit is still all around you . . . he just left his shell. My condolences and prayers are with you.

This was a terrible thing. I believe that what is being said is not the entire truth. The military just doesn't let live ammo get into training mission's without someone knowing about it. This Hero was family, and someone need's to come forward and explain why this happened. I DO NOT BELIEVE THIS WAS AN ACCIDENT!! If anyone know's more, email. FREEDOM OF SPEECH right!! Thanks
