Iraq veteran to speak: Col. Robert P. "Powl" Smith, a Tulsa native, Iraq veteran and brother of former state Rep. Hopper Smith, will speak twice Tuesday about Iraq and the war on terrorism.

Smith will address the Tulsa County Republican Women at 11:30 a.m. at the Holiday Inn Select, 5000 E. Skelly Drive. To be included in the lunch plans, call 742-8822.

Smith will address the Tulsa Republican Assembly at 6 p.m. at Johnnie's Charcoal Grill, 5001 S. Harvard Ave.

Smith is now the chief of operations for the Standing Joint Force Headquarters, U.S. Northern Command, at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Rice touts fundraising: State Sen. Andrew Rice, D-Oklahoma City, said last week that his U.S. Senate campaign raised $310,000 during its first 60 days, most of it from Oklahoma. Rice is the only Democrat to announce an intention to challenge Sen. James Inhofe, a Republican, next year.

Askins to be honored: The Oklahoma Democratic Caucus will honor Lt. Gov. Jari Askins on Oct. 16 at the Oklahoma City Marriott. For information or to make reservations, call (405) 427-7926.

Carl Albert awards set: The Oklahoma Democratic Party's Carl Albert awards banquet will be Oct. 20 at the Reed Center in Midwest City. This year's honorees are Bob Lemon, an Oklahoma City lawyer, and the late Keith Leftwich. The keynote speaker will be U.S. Rep. James Clyburn, the House's majority whip.
