At least two tents at the Oktoberfest festival collapsed during a storm Wednesday evening, injuring more than 30 people, authorities said.
An estimated 5,000 people were under the Bier Garten tent and about 2,000 people were under another tent when they collapsed.
EMSA spokeswoman Tina Wells said 21 people were taken to hospitals, one of them in critical condition.
Authorities said that when it started raining, festivalgoers started pouring into the tents to stay dry. Then a gust of wind hit. The poles that held up the tents leaned with the wind, and then the tents collapsed.
Kathryn Cooper, a Tulsa World employee who was at Oktoberfest with her son, said the wind "picked up the tent like it was nothing and slammed it into us."
"I dove under the table when it happened," she said.
Her 15-year-old son, Kellan, was hit in the back by a tent pole but was not seriously injured.
The Bier Garten, which had 240 picnic tables inside and was full of people, was completely blown over. Other tents, which were not occupied at the time, were ripped and partially collapsed by the storm.
Police evacuated the River West Festival Park, where the event is held.
Event staff said the Oktoberfest committee will decide tonight whether the
festival will reopen tomorrow.

There was no way something like this could have been predicted. This is a pretty big deal and I understand why they'd interrupt programming. I'm sure #1 is expressing pent-up frustration over all those other times when WWF, Fox News and NFL have been interrupted for storms that don't really affect his/her viewing area. Living way over here, I feel that "pain," but keep things in perspective, ok?

I'm glad the moderator got ridof that. It just shows how some people have no intelligence. I applaud the weather guys for staying on the air. So you missed one episode of a show! Get your couch poato but up and go to a park sometime!

If comments #1 and #2 don't make sense right away, consider this: the original #1 comment claimed people were "idiots" if they went to Octoberfest tonight because a) the forecast predicted bad weather; b) the event was in a tent, of all things; and c) he/she had his/her shorts in a wad due to missing regular programming because of the storm.

Wow. I had just been invited to go. I'm glad I wasn't a part of that. I hope everyone, including whom invited me, is ok.

Dave from Owasso: it didn't just fall, there were huge metal poles flying through the air. I happened to be facing them and was able to duck below a table but other people didn't see them and were hit.

It is now being said that a downburst hit right on the tent. That would make sense. An immense amount of wind comes straight down and then mushrooms out. Makes sense base on witnesses saying the tent lifted up and then crashed down.
Thanks to all Emergency services that took care of business.

This was a very violent line of storms that wreaked havoc across a wide area. Of course the TV stations needed to keep viewers posted--and still some of the storms hit without much warning of how very serious they were, like the one that injured 6 in Rogers County.
I get very tired of the crybabies who worry about missing their shows because a TV station actually meets the terms of its license to serve the public interest, convenience and necessity. Besides, at least one station--Channel 6--is rebroadcasting the two affected network shows in the wee hours so fans can watch them. I am DVRing one of them

Its just a celebration of "Public drunkeness" they should have known better than to get drunk in a storm. Wonder if the hospitals and jail allow the "Chicken polka"????

Hey, JW. Not everyone drinks the "weak: i.e. American" beer. Gotta love me some German Bier! Probst!

I had a friend who was injured there last night. I turned down two invitations to attend corporate night because I just didn't want to be at Oktoberfest during a downpour. However, some of the comments on here are just ridiculously insensitive to the situation. I'm almost embarrassed to comment on this website anymore. I suppose I'm not that embarrassed because apparently I'm doing it anyway. Seriously though folks, show some class.

I agree with Jeff from Tulsa in Comment #14.
The comments have been embarrassing to say the least. Just because you go to the festival does not mean that you are going to get drunk. I love the German food and go every year. The people who work as voluntaries work hard and put in a lot of hours, not to mention do you know how much money the festival gives to Tulsa for the river parks and other items. Know what you are talking about before you talk. One trip down riverside should tell you some or maybe you should check out their website.
