Pastors call for Roberts to resign
John Swails (left), a former Oral Roberts University professor, looks on Monday evening as Pastor David Bullock of the National Council for Community Empowerment calls for the resignation of ORU President Richard Roberts. CORY YOUNG / Tulsa World

This story misquoted Oklahoma Baptist State Convention President J.A. Reed Jr. The article should have said the convention had not yet made the decision whether to support the resignation of Oral Roberts University President Richard Roberts.
A rally supports former professors who filed a lawsuit.
Pastors from Detroit called for accountability and integrity at Oral Roberts University and asked for President Richard Roberts to resign at an event that was billed as a rally in support of former professors who are suing the college.
The Rev. Charles E. Williams II and Pastor David Bullock, both with the National Council for Community Empowerment, led the rally at Morning Star Baptist Church in Tulsa. They spoke at the beginning of an annual Oklahoma Baptist State Convention meeting on Monday night.
Neither the church nor the convention sponsored the rally, which, in addition to convention members and three other people, was attended by one of the professors and his family.
However, the convention supports removing Roberts from the presidency, said the convention's president, Pastor John Reed of Oklahoma City.
Williams said the national council planned to speak with ORU regents individually about Roberts' situation.
Last week, Roberts took a leave of absence, and ORU Board of Regents Chairman George Pearsons said the board will decide if and when Roberts returns, based on its own and an outside auditor's investigations into the lawsuit's allegations.
Williams prayed for God to "straighten him out right now in the mighty name of Jesus."
He said that because ORU receives federal Pell Grant money, taxpayers' money is allegedly being used to pay for renovations to the ORU presidential house and for the president's trip to the Bahamas, as a report attached to the lawsuit claims.
ORU students who feared that they would not graduate if they spoke out themselves had asked the national council to speak, Bullock said.
He said that as a clergy member, he knows that every person has failings, but he said he wants accountability and integrity systematized and ensured at ORU.

THE PLAN OF SALVATION FOR ORU
NEW PRESIDENT
NEW BOARD OF REGENTS
NEW NAME
Anything less means ORU will continue to held in contempt, and devalue the worth of a degree.
WILL THE ABOVE HAPPEN?
NO. NOT WILLINGLY.
Oral's presence makes clear this erratic, unstable family of TV evangelists plan to
hang on to the end -- regardless of effect on ORU, it's students or grads.
It's time for people with evidence of wrong-doing to step forward and provide in -- in confidentiality -- to the TW for investigation.

Swails.....why dont you get Carlton Pearson to join your ranks, then you can really add controversy. Richardson, Swails and the Brookers are money hungry liars. It is evident since you now state you wont mediate. Your plot has been this since the beginning. Maybe if Richardson hadnt lost all his money in his divorce, he wouldnt be such an ambulance chaser. What is funny, is that all of you are doing the same thing you are accusing the Roberts's of.....stealing from ORU.....Bunch of hypocrite liars, the bunch of you......all liars will be cast into the lake of fire. I pray that you all change your ways.

Bob, just a thought. What if the allegations are found to be true? Are they still liars? Are they still stealing from ORU?

I am not on one side or the other. Just let it all play out BEFORE making judgments on anyone in the suit.

I am a current student and am aware of a lot of these allegations.
When Oral said ALL this allegations were false about 20 people clapped...very awkward. Because 90% of the audience each personally KNOWS of at least one allegation that is true. (cuz many are)
It's going to get even more interesting.
Mediation...the plaintiffs/lawyers had no idea about mediation until Oral mentions it in chapel.
It's God's university, not Orals!

The National Council For Community Empowerment. What are they and who are they to take such a stand? They say they are doing this on behalf of "students" but won't be transparent and disclose how many are even in their own titled group. This NCCE, are your books open? How much of a stretch is it saying you are acting on behalf of "scared students"? If Williams' claims of any money being spent on the upkeep of a university building are to have validity, then he better start to working on emptying out every bit of college and university staff housing, and church parsonage in the country! He certainly has no idea of what "Maintenance of Facilities" involves. His inference that Pell Grant money is being spent on this is ridiculous, because the government grants the Pell Grant to the student, and those grants are applied to each student's account balance. A school doesn't have any say about who gets them and who doesn't. His comments about a university ministry trip are so ridiculous I won't even respond.
William's claims of being a council, and saying a school president should be gotten rid of demonstrates a lot of audacity, since he bases his mandate on allegations that are admittedly speculation and not proven. Where is "innocent until proven guilty"? Would Williams and others that comment on these articles want the same tactics used on themselves? I doubt it.
I don't think a Dr. would be removing an organ from a patients body, before making an accurate diagnosis of what is truly wrong, and why. Such nonsense! For the off with his head people, I will put this in simpler terms.
You don't remove a kidney, when it's actually the liver that's the problem. Something to think about is, what if it's the gossips and rumormongers that are the real problem?
That outcome could be just as easily the situation as the Roberts being any problem. The claims, premature "fixers", and Roberts haters certainly have no knowledge or experience in the Maintenance of Facilities, or even what the IRS Laws allow for things, for that matter.

I wondered who they were and who cares what they say. I did a Google exact phrase search and found only 8 entries. Their website is a joke and I noticed that they approached the problem with a "guilty until proven innocent" or "guilty because accused" Regardless of one's position on RR, LR, OR, ORU, the regents or alumn, that won't fly in Tulsa. I wondered why TW even covered them. Probably back in their home of Detroit GM would welcome their help solving some of their problems.

It may help you to read my comments on #5. Through no fault of your own, there's a lot you have no knowledge of when it comes to many of these allegations. For example, the rules of Facilities Maintenance. You have no idea if a contractor or employee is salaried or not. If there's a contract, a school should keep the workers busy doing things for the salary they get. Why should they just sit there? Or, if a contrator's company has a contract for such and such, it's wise to use them, because they are already paid per year if they do little or more. That's just the beginning of things. Wait for investigations and audits to take place, and they do take time, before you "think you saw" or "know it's true". You really don't, and are speculating without knowledge of what has gone on.

Larry2 - Just from reading this article, it was plain to see that they are unknowledgeable on how a university is run.
To swoop into town from Michigan and tell a president of a school to step down without proving guilt shows a lot of audacity.

ORU was founded by a snake-oil salesman who gained prominence from "faith healing," which does not exist. There is video evidence of Oral healing the same people at revivals in different cities in the 1950s, and people with very identifiable infirmities (such as truly being crippled) were always cordoned off from the rest of the suckers at these events. If you want to know what kind of scum Oral and his ilk are, read, "The Faith Healers," by James Randi. These "men" abuse people's deeply-held faith to make their millions, and I, for one, hope this scandal takes them down for good so that people spit after saying the Roberts' name.

I did a followup search on comment #7, on the "council" named in the article. I could only find two that pertained to the same web address. Four men in Detroit make up the council. In the buy our products section, you can purchase a "thong". It's a political activist site, not a Christian or a recognized group from Higher Education. It appears that they are trying to present an illusion. I am surprised, as larry 2 in comment #7 was, that the Tulsa World or any reputable news organization would do an article on them commanding a university president to step down. That kind of command is only appropriate when guilt of accusations is proven.

Okay I will admit I am not a person who knows the bible word for word, but I do beleive in God and worship him. I remember Jesus was not living a life of riches and wealth. I don't know the details of the Roberts personal finances, but I can say they are living way above humble christians. I feel there are some things not on the up and up at the university. And this should be looked into. But people we cannot blame everything on the Devil, remember God works in mysterious ways this way be the work of God, it's for us to pray and let God handle this, remember lean not on your own understanding Trust in God and he will make the way.

#11 Asudo concerning your comments on 5,8,9, just because a position somewhat lacking, ie., it does not necessarily mean that they are on the opposite side of the issue. I felt that Family of Grads was simply pointing out facts that were in opposition to a healthy debate. The "pastors" did not follow the rules for healthy debate and thinking people should not take them seriously.

When is the Tulsa World going to learn how long the independent investigation will take to be completed? Oral needs to let this investigation be done without looking over their shoulders. A new President with academic credentials who can raise money for the endowment and a new executive board of Regents are critically important for ORU to continue successfully.

Oral is back for the same reason Richard refused to step down, until some obvious pressure was applied. Both men believe that THEY ARE the University. Their thinking is very similar to King's in medieval societies, where the King was usually as important or more important than the Kingdom, and its unfortunate denizens.
If Richard goes down, rest assured the University will follow him to the bottom of the sea. This is simply the world in which they live.

This family thing: It isn't so much a matter of if they leave, but when, & why, that will make the difference. If the Roberts leave because of sensationalism, & only accusations of intentional wrongdoing, ORU will close, which is what many that have posted on these threads want to happen. Remember, there's a difference between, error, mistake, & criminal intent. Even the IRS gives you that much decency. That's more than most of the posters here are willing to do. Investigations, audits, & things like that take time. The "I want it now" society that we have today is pitiful.

I have to add to my above post. No wonder most of the younger generation, as well as older, are up past their eyeballs in debt. They want everything, & they want it NOW. They can't wait on anything. Then they turn & cluck about someone else's debt.

G,
You know, as well as I, that no information about the Cantees allegations will come out of ORU. It won't come out of the lawsuit either, whether it is settled or goes to trial. It won't come from the IRS either. I certainly wouldn't expect the BOR to self-police the Roberts. I think that if even some of the allegations are true the Roberts need to be disengaged.
Do you think those issues are worth investigation? What do you suggest?
