Regents take stronger role after lawsuit
Pearsons

ORU's governing board has become more "hands-on" amid the university's legal turmoil, the panel's chairman says.
Oral Roberts University's board of regents is stepping up its role at the college following allegations made in a lawsuit, Chairman George Pearsons said in an interview Tuesday.
"The board is very quickly becoming . . . much more hands-on," said Pearsons, pastor of Eagle Mountain International Church in Newark, Texas.
Its role is to set and oversee policy, he said.
"The board has the oversight of the university, and we're responsible for what goes on," he said. "We have every right to ask questions, to investigate."
Three former ORU professors have sued ORU, its board, its president and three other administrators for allegedly wrongfully firing them or forcing them to resign. Their lawsuit and an attached report contain allegations of misconduct by President Richard Roberts and his family, among other claims.
Pearsons said he received the report that is attached to the lawsuit about two weeks before the lawsuit was filed. A few days before the lawsuit hit, the board's audit and compliance committee started an investigation into the allegations, he said. The investigation continues.
On Tuesday, the board signed a contract with a Washington law firm that will oversee an independent audit of the allegations, Pearsons said. He said he needed permission from attorneys to name the firm, but he said the board had searched for a company that was high-profile, out of state and had never done business with ORU.
"I have to prove we are not sweeping anything under the rug," he said. "Everything's on the table -- nothing to hide."
ORU is working to regain the confidence of the community, alumni and others, he said.
Pearsons said he and Co-Interim President Billy Joe Daugherty, co-pastor of Victory Christian Center in Tulsa, agree that the investigations need to cover ORU's hiring and firing procedures -- and everything related to the lawsuit's allegations.
"We're just really taking a hard look at ourselves," he said. "Every decision we (regents) make must be in the best interest of the university."
Pearsons became the board chairman about five months ago and expected to focus on raising money for ORU, he said. He compared his shifted attention to President George W. Bush's focus on domestic issues before the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.
"This is a warning to other boards just how serious it is that they do their job," Pearsons said.
One of the professors suing ORU, John Swails, said this week that Roberts once referred to ORU as "my university."
But two weeks ago, Roberts' wife, Lindsay Roberts, said she and her husband had submitted themselves to the board of regents, which decided when the couple would speak publicly about the lawsuit and will decide when and if Richard Roberts returns from his leave of absence to resume his presidency.
Regarding ORU's long-term future, Pearsons said he thinks ORU's founding purpose of evangelism will carry the college forward without a prominent personality, such as Oral or Richard Roberts, at the helm.

George needs all the help we can give him. Everyone get on Jane Maxey GMAC Realtors website. You can view Stephanie Cantees' photo on the associates page. You can certainly tell she is Lindsay's sister. Her e-mail address is there PLUS her cell phone number. Let's everyone contact her in some way and see if she has the courage to come forward and tell the whole world the REAL story! Let's all do it today!

CLOSING THE BARN DOOR AFTER THE HORSE IS OUT
TOO LITTLE -- TOO LATE -- AND FORCED BY PUBLIC OPINION
The REAL investigations are already underway, and they're not paid for by ORU.
The ORU name has already been stained by what has gone before.
AND THERE'S MUCH MORE TO COME -- arising from years of this kind of behavior.
Fasten your seat belts.

It seems that Stephanie Cantees has chosen to stay private during all this. You can bet she has had opportunities to be interviewed. I highly doubt that she wants the public filling her email inbox or her cell phone voice mail. Don't bother.

I keep reading the phrase, "Cantees' allegations". Unless I missed something, she is not one the plaintiffs and the stolen information is simply a record of rumors that she kept. If so, did she do it at someone else's request? Were they inside the organization? Did she do it on her own and why?
Most importantly, what is a list of rumors doing in a lawsuit?

George Pearson: You are late coming to the party. I find it very hard to believe that you will take the kind of action needed to 'cure' this problem. You have to rid the university of the Roberts family, or, you will find that this type of controversy will come to the ministries of each of the board members. If you guys cover all of this, we are going to think that you also are covering your own actions.

As a pastor for 30 years, I am not surprised by the “fire storm” that surrounds ORU in the secular media. What grieves me the most are the attacks that are occurring from fellow Christians as they pass judgment on the Roberts without having ANY first hand information on the accusations. Not one of us likes it when that is done to us! Like vultures looking for death, many believers seem to be enjoying this too much. As much as I recognize the secular news, they do not have to live by the same standards as believers. By their own admission they are not as interested in “truth” as they are “the story” so they can sell papers and advertisement.
The Roberts deserve at the very least “due process” and in reality they are entitled to the same grace and mercy that their accusers would want in their own lives. The body of Christ should be first to “withhold judgment” until all the facts are known. Even if any portion of these spurious, salacious charges prove to be true, as believers we are commanded to treat a person who has stumbled with the same mercy that we would want if we were in the same situation. If you are a human then you appreciate when you are shown mercy from others and God. None of us would want to be treated this way.
I think the way we treat others in their time of crisis tells us much about ourselves. As a graduate of ORU with a doctor’s degree, I am grateful to Brother Oral for his vision to found this great university and for Richards’s leadership during very difficult times for Evangelical Christians. I offer my prayers and support for the Roberts, the Regents, the Staff and Students during this difficult time.

Good idea David. Let’s all become psycho stalkers because it makes us mad that someone would dare run a religion based school. Let’s all run this woman down and make her life miserable. Maybe we could ruin her life. That would make you feel good deep in your heart, eh David? Maybe you can track down Richard and Lindsay and beat them with sticks. Any other good stalker ideas David. No, your attitude isn’t dangerous, psychotic and sociopathic. Oh no.

When the law firm issues its report on the investigation, ORU should release it to the public - in full, without any editing. If they do that, we will know that there is nothing to hide.
.
What are the odds of that happening?

Dear Concerned-I think what you are saying is the reason people have not come forward in the past about their experiences with ORU or the Roberts: they will be branded as "secular" or "not Christians." This whole incident gives real Christians a bad name. Therein lies the irony. And "critics" of those who speak up say "if we were in the same situation." Who can compare being in the same situation as the Roberts? Most of us never have access to millions of dollars in donations, a lavish lifestyle with no accountability and a clear disregard for responsibility to anyone...including God. It's apples to oranges. It's just my opinion but I think more people turn away from God because of the flashy, arrogant televangelists than find him through them. The mainstream, neighborhood and community churches have not done their job of reaching out to people so the vultures have been able to "prey" on these people in the comfort of their living rooms. Honestly it is a failure of we as Christians to reach out to our neighbors. We bear some responsibility for the harm done to people through the so-called annointed few with airtime and monetary incentive.

You say most of us never have access to millions of dollars. Most of us have never had so much to be responsible for, either. Can you do it better? I doubt it. It's easy to be an arm chair quarterback. Every day, people, Christians and unbelievers alike, get overwhelmed by their own life's circumstance, slip and fall over much less than this. It's all relative.

This Board of Regents has fiddled for years while Rome burned, so to speak. In other words, they have essentially done absolutely nothing while the Roberts clan has made ORU its' private kingdom, full of coruption, chicanery and personal aggrandizement. Why should anyone believe this Pearson character and his gang of enablers will step up to the plate now? He says they had the report attached to the lawsuit two weeks prior to the suit being filed, and "had begun" an audit and compliance review. Big whoop! I guarantee that had the suit not been filed and made public, we'd have heard
N-O-T-H-I-N-G about any of this. This Board of so-called Regents ought to be the subject of another independent investigation for their complicity and enabling of the abuse by the Roberts. Pearsons and the Board have no credibility. They haven't earned any. This is way too little and much too late. I think the board ought to cease any involvement with this case and allow the suit to proceed unhindered. Davey

I really appreciate and agree with your post and agree whole heartedly.
I would like to add that much of the judging that has appeared in these posts is much more than recognition of wrong doing, but rather a statement of the intents of someone's heart. The word tells us that our hearts are deceitful and who can know them, but post after post ignores the warning that we can't know our own heart and goes on to tell what others feel, want, think, are trying to do, etc. I believe that that is what Jesus meant when He said "with what judgement we judge, we will be judged. . ." No Thanks!

The article states Pearson as saying the founding purpose of ORU was evangelism. Shouldn't it be educating its students? Shouldn't evangelism be the churchs role not the schools founding role?

Hey Mr. Pearsons, here's a question for you: It is painfully apparent to anyone with a brain that this suit cannot have been the first indication you ever received of alleged wrong-doing by the Roberts family. Where is there any evidence that you or the Board ever did an audit and compliance review when these allegations arose in the past? Where were you, sir, when we needed you the most? Where were you sir, when the students and employees at ORU were counting on you to do your duty and be something more than an enabler and yes man? I have pity for the students that have gotten caught up in and trapped by the "Roberts seed-faith healing hokum" that these charlatans have espoused for decades. I have none for you however...you've drunk the koolaid more deeply than any student ever has, and you're just as deeply deceived by the Roberts as anyone. Worse, you've willfully used your position to aid and abet their shameful behaviour. You sir, ought to be ashamed. Davey

You are right George, you and the Regents have to do what is right for the university and not for the ruling family.
Are you aware that you and the other Regents could be removed by the Trustees of ORA/ORM? Perhaps the Regents should hire their own attorney to research the legal interrelationships of the organizations? Might be helpful in case there's a showdown.

We don't know. I'm with Poster #1. Her e-mail address and cell number is readily availble online. If she desired no contact, this info should have been removed from her "contact" information. I thought that a Board of Regents was generally comprised of people with various backgrounds, but all highly educated. I know ORU gives doctorate degrees, but do any of these people have degrees from other universites that are not run by tv preachers?
just curious.
