OKLAHOMA CITY -- Hundreds of opponents of Oklahoma's new immigration reform law gathered at the state Capitol on Thursday to renounce the bill.

"Today our children cry," Pat Fennel of the Latino Community Development agency told the group. "But tomorrow our children vote."

House Bill 1804 by Rep. Randy Terrill, R-Moore, and Sen. James Williamson, R-Tulsa, took effect Thursday. The new law prohibits illegal immigrants from getting jobs and state benefits and makes it a felony to harbor or transport illegal immigrants.

Several state leaders spoke at the rally, including Rep. Al Lindley, D-Oklahoma City, and Oklahoma NAACP President Roosevelt Milton. The crowd, waving American flags, and many holding signs, recited the Pledge of Allegiance, sang the national anthem and stood for a moment of silence.

The bill is ironic, especially considering that Oklahoma "defines itself by those who settled here illegally," said the Rev. Don Wolf, a priest from Duncan, referring to the Sooners who sneaked into Oklahoma ahead of the April 22, 1889, land run.

He also referred to the classic novel,

"The Grapes of Wrath," which tells the plight of Oklahomans traveling to California during the Dust Bowl days.

"The most famous book about Oklahoma is about Okies who became economic refugees," he told the crowd.

Wolf said that the law's purpose is to cause fear and misery.

"We stand against the misery that this law causes," he said. "We stand with all of those who can't speak because they're afraid."

Get legal!, (11/1/2007 2:38:16 PM)
Did the law cause this misery? Must be the law's fault that illegals refuse to follow it.

It's time all of us proponents of this law rally on the capital ourselves.

"The most famous book about Oklahoma is about Okies who become economic refugees". The differance, not that it matters to Rev. Wolf is the people in the book moved to another state not illegally invade another country!

I say get them out of here. If they are ILLEGAL aliens, they have NO right to jobs or healthcare of other gov't benefits that OUR hard earned tax dollars pay for. They came here Illegally, let them immigrate the LEGAL way and they WILL qualify for aid and jobs! What they're doing is breaking the law and it's about time we put more strict laws on the books and ENFORCED THEM!

How come in every picture of the Rev Orta, his face is screwed up? He should be complaining about the photographers, not some law that hasn't gotten anybody deported yet.

THIS IS NOT ABOUT RACE! GET OFF OF IT!

-

I was raised in a community of 70% hispanics. When I first moved to Tulsa in 1995, I could not get any of the spices and cuts of meat I used to cook my hispanic inspired meals. I love the hispanic culture! But the hispanics and any other national needs to be here legally.

-

Personally, I do not understand why someone that is not a US citizen is allowed to serve in our military! Does snyone else find that strange?

Illegal immigrants can not enter the military. Some have entered using fraudulent I.D. and when they were caught, they were dismissed. Only legal residents or visa holders can join the military.

To stay correct...hispanics are considered white...but you are correct Loosey Goosey...white, black, brown, yellow...if you are not a US citizen...get the proper docs or you will be arrested in Oklahoma! Praise God!

Actually, Hispanic are neither black nor white, but both. Remember Spain was occupied for hundreds upon hundreds of years by the Moors , whom were black. And like all conquers of that time, they interbred with that country’s citizens. At one time the inhabitants of Spain ,and Italy for that matter, clearly had European features. You know the blond, red hair and the various colors of eyes (blue, green, etc). That is why you will sometimes see a blond haired or a blue eyed Hispanic. That dormant gene comes through every now and then. Or sometimes they will marry a white person whose stronger European gene comes through in their children. But those brown eyes and dark hair which is typical of most is courtesy of the Moors. While a lot of Hispanics consider themselves white, they are in fact denying the fact that they carry the DNA of their Moorish ancestors. But this is typical in most Latin countries.

I think all this is going to come to a bad, bad, end. I've heard talk about a possible second civil war. And it is one thing to hear it from white people. Because you can always call them racist, but I have heard a lot of negative comments from Asians, blacks and latinos. This cheap labor is going to be paid for with a very high price. And you know who is to blame. The corrupt governments of the countries these people come from, our corrupt businesses and government on this side. This has been a game that has been played for far too long. And now that we have tens of millions of illegal immigrants, the volcano is going to blow. It's not a questions of if, but when.

As a daughter of LEGAL immigrants who played by the rules to come to this country, work hard, learned English, became successful professionals, educated four children while NEVER needing or using public benefits, I am offended by these illegal aliens and their ethno-supremacist, racist, supporters like the "Rev. Orta" a self-proclaimed "Latino" representative. He doesn't represent the majority of mainstream Americans of Hispanic heritage who are law-abiding, and respect the customs, norms, language and traditions of this great country. ORTA represents the new wave of ethnic-hustlers willing to advocate for millions of illegal aliens to the detriment of the safety, health and welfare of all law-abiding citizens and legal residnts. Of course we don't want illegal aliens here...they were NOT invited by the American people. Greedy businesses and employers brought them here and the corrupt, criminal governments of Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Salvador pushed them here as well. Orta would do better to assist the illegals in getting their affairs in order before they are deported and start selling bus tickets back to Mexico. Si se puede..enforce the law. Si se puede...report and deport! Just say NO MAS to illegal aliens and ethno-supremacist hustlers like Orta.

Call your congress folks, it just irks them when you tell them to stop wasting time and just enforce the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, which would save time and tens of millions of dollars. They stutter and sputter, just cracks me up.

Riverside passed a similar law and now regrets it. People woke up the next day to find many of their friends they didnt know are illegal gone. The streets are deserted and shops and malls ill-patronized. Illegal immigrantion has helped the US to be great - Salaries are comparably high while food prices are very low making the US poor better than the rich in other countries. The fallouts from these so-called state immigration law is to lead to more outsourcing and off-shoring.

I wonder whether in the US speing and grammar is important. People on this board are accusing the Mexicans left, right and center for not speaking and learning English. English is not my first language but I think I can write better English than most of you writing a bunch of garbage here. Instead of harping on this immigration issue, you should go learn how to write and construct your own language well. Without "anchor" babies, many of your here whose parents migrated here from especially east Europe w/o proper paperwork wouldnt have been citizens either. Most of your parents didnt come with visas. They came on tempoararily and stayed, gave birth to you and now your're legal and whining about those here illegally. Go get a life.

I have very mixed feelings about this entire issue. On one hand, I feel sorry for the people who felt they had to come here to either survive or do better for themselves or their families. On the other hand, I and others have suffered because decent jobs have been taken by people who immigrated (both legally and illegally).

Regarding those who are illegal immigrants, I believe our federal government has done you a great disservice. You came here and were not caught and removed, which gave you hope and an imaginary future. Some of you came here, took jobs that you were glad to find (but those jobs really weren't yours to take), bought houses (but you should never have been allowed to borrow the money to buy the houses because you come not possibly promise to repay based on an illegal status), and made a life for yourselves. You have come to think of yourselves as "citizens", somehow deserving to vote (thereby violating our laws and becoming prosecutable for felony voter fraud and felony violations of immigration law) and deserving to be here, yet most not having paid the price of citizenship in the form of taxes, car insurance, or service in the nations armed forces. Originally, many of you came just to make money to send back home to your families, but, over the years, you decided to bring your families here or have kids here, thereby taxing our communities' support systems. Many of you obtain and use services for free that many of those legally in our society can not afford.

Instead of paying the price for a society such as ours, which involves taking up arms to remove those from office and position who defraud you of a true future in your own country and thereby creating a society for yourselves, you elect to come here and live off our society. You complain about the way you are treated here when you should be going back home and fixing the problems in your own country. Of course, that's easy to say, and perhaps meaningless when we have a majority of citizens in this country who won't stand up against the tyranny dished out by our own government and court systems. But that is our problem and we will pay a price for it.

Regarding those who have come here "legally" as workers for designated jobs, you were allowed to come here because you supposedly supplied a skill that an employer here could not find an American to supply. This practice, in the majority of cases, is just so much BS. Our federal government, by allowing you to come here, has removed opportunity from the present generation and its children. In most cases. the federal government committed fraud by allowing you to be imported for the positions you held. In many cases, I suspect you were educated here and retained here. And, in those cases, I suspect American skilled professionals and workers were available to supply the "skills" that were so invaluable. According to the economic laws of supply and demand, your presence resulted in a decrease of pay for the jobs performed, which caused fewer of our people to pursue those skills and careers. Therefore, the federal government was ultimately fraudulent in that regard, also, toward you and our citizenry. The truth is that you were not so invaluable that we could not do quite nicely without you. Before you came, we somehow managed. We the citizens should hold our federal government accountable for the fraud committed upon us and our children.

But, I do have a heart and I feel for all of you whether here illegally or "legally". I know that you have become settled in our land. I know how I would feel if the shoes were on my feet. I would be hoping for a miracle. Life sometimes provides a great miracle. However, sometimes it doesn't. When it doesn't, you find that your house was built on a foundation of sand, and a day of reckoning comes. In that day of reckoning, all or most is lost, and that is the situation you find yourselves. Many of you will lose nearly everything when you return to your homelands.

Might I suggest that all is not lost! Take what you learned here (whi

Might I suggest that all is not lost! Take what you learned here (which is probably more than you would have learned for the time spent wherever else you would have been) back to your homelands and start changing your societies. If you need to overthrow your government using force, then do so. The US Declaration of Independence is one of the greatest documents of all time because it defines the situations and grievences that mandate the right and the responsibility of a citizenry to overthrow their government. Use this document as a guide for your future actions. Some of you will die trying, but this is the price of freedom. Freedom that can be won without a fight and the shedding of blood is probably not true freedom: Our history teaches this. By the way, please do not think you have the right to use our Declaration against us. You don't, and if you try, the results won't be pretty. No, return to your homelands and do what you must.

Some of you are here under fraudulent and less than honorable circumstances. Please note that I am not referring only to Hispanics. I suppose that Hispanics are the majority of our immigrants, but there are others ranging from Ukrainians, to Hindus, to Muslims, to Chinese, to etc. If you are not willing join to our society as a functioning member and incur the price of citizenship, then, whether you are here legally or not, please go home. If you can not think of yourselves as Americans and only Americans, you do not belong here. We shouldn't be having any Afro-Americans, Hispanic-Americans, Muslim-Americans, Irish-Americans, etc. We are all Americans, or we are nothing. If you can not abide by this, then you are here under false pretenses if you took an oath of citizenship to this country. You may be here under false pretenses if you are unwilling to keep our laws and traditions even if you did not take the oath of citizenship. Plain and simply, leave - and the sooner, the better.

I hope my fellow Americans will elect to avoid activities similar to the unfortunate barbaric actions of the past. I mention this because the rhetoric seen in print on this board and other places shows a hatred toward "people" in general. Many immigrants are here legally and should not be harrassed, thought badly of, or harmed as they really are an asset to our community and to our country. Many of these immigrants value our citizenship as much as we do and obtained naturalized citizenship here under the correct and honorable pretense. We must not judge on appearances alone regarding where a person might have come from or we could become worse than those we seek to repatriate to their homelands.

I do wish these people who will be leaving us the best in their collective futures, which I hope will prove fruitful for themselves and their children's children.

I just want to remember to those who are for tougher immigration laws, that this nation was built by immigrants who were fleeing from poverty and prosecution. If we go back in times , the first settlers in the first colony in Jamestown and the latter colonies came to America for freedom and a better life.

Everybody should be given a fair chance to live the American dream , this is what made Us what we are today !
