Hundreds protest new law
Jose Sifuentes of Oklahoma City waves an American flag Thursday at the Capitol as he participates in a rally opposing the state’s new immigration enforcement law. Associated Press

Watch a slide show and read all the stories in a series on the immigration of thousands of people from Casa Blanca to Tulsa.
Read all of the Tulsa World’s coverage of House Bill 1804.
Opponents say the immigration reform law is unjust and will force families to separate.
OKLAHOMA CITY — Hundreds of opponents of Oklahoma’s new immigration reform law rallied Thursday at the Capitol, hours after the measure took effect. The bill, they say, is racist and will break up families.
“Today our children cry,” Pat Fennell of the Latino Community Development Agency told the crowd. “But tomorrow our children vote.”
House Bill 1804 by Rep. Randy Terrill, R-Moore, and Sen. James Williamson, R-Tulsa, took effect Thursday.
The new law requires employers to verify the legal status of workers and tightens rules on issuing identification cards. It also makes it a felony to harbor or transport illegal immigrants.
The bill is ironic, especially considering that Oklahoma “defines itself by those who settled here illegally,” said the Rev. Don Wolf, referring to the Sooners who sneaked into Oklahoma ahead of the April 22, 1889, land run.
The Duncan priest also referred to the classic novel, “The Grapes of Wrath,” which tells of the plight of Oklahomans
traveling to California during the Dust Bowl days.
“The most famous book about Oklahoma is about Okies who became economic refugees,” he told the crowd.
Wolf said that the law’s purpose is to cause fear and misery.
“We stand against the misery that this law causes,” he said. “We stand with all of those who can’t speak because they’re afraid.”
Conflict and controversy:
Several state leaders spoke at the two-hour rally, including Rep. Al Lindley, D-Oklahoma City, and Oklahoma NAACP President Roosevelt Milton.
“This country was built on conflict and controversy,” Milton said. “And we continue to have conflict and controversy.”
Milton said that the NAACP considers the law punitive and unjust, and that it must be challenged.
“We cannot have 28 states, each with their own immigration laws,” he said.
The crowd, waving American flags, recited the Pledge of Allegiance, sang the national anthem and stood for a moment of silence. Many carried signs with messages decrying the law’s impact on families.
“Give me my rights back, give me my identity back, but most of all, give me my family back,” one sign read.
Juan Luna of Oklahoma City came to the rally to oppose the law because although he is a citizen, “I’m feeling what the people feel.” Luna said members of the Hispanic community are worried about their families, and about the separation of children from their parents. “The U.S. needs to look for a different way to fix these problems,” he said.
Law’s supporters:
Terrill, the bill’s author, said he was not aware of any problems with the new law, but that the focus has now turned to monitoring implementation of it.
It’s likely some legislation will be filed next session to “tweak” various aspects of the law.
Terrill addressed the opponents’ fear that the law will separate families, saying that he is aware of the concern.
“I think that some of their scenarios that they put forth from time to time are highly improbable,” Terrill said.
“And to the extent they do occur, they really have no one to blame but themselves. They are the ones who made the decision to either voluntarily come here or remain here in violation of federal immigration law.”
The rally did attract a handful of supporters of Oklahoma’s immigration law, including Scott Grass of Mustang, who said that while he sympathized with the concern for families, the country cannot have open borders, especially with the state of the world and age of terrorism.
Tulsa news conference:
Earlier in the day at a news conference in Tulsa, the Rev. Miguel Rivera, president of the National Coalition of Latino Clergy and Christian Leaders, said a U.S. citizen had been arrested in Tulsa County for transporting her boyfriend, who was an illegal alien.
But Tulsa County Undersheriff Brian Edwards said he wasn’t aware of anyone being arrested in Tulsa County for violating the provisions of the new law.
Edwards said the sheriff’s office is only checking the residency status of people who are arrested, not victims or witnesses.
Rivera and the Rev. Victor Orta said they have faith that U.S. District Judge James Payne will eventually declare the law unconstitutional.
A challenge to the law is pending before Payne, who refused to issue a preliminary injunction to block the law Wednesday.
Rivera said he expects a ruling from Payne in the next two months.
“We have a lot of faith in Judge James Payne, and I think he will do the right thing for the state of Oklahoma,” he said.
If Payne does not rule their way, Rivera said his group is ready to take the case to the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals or the U.S. Supreme Court.
No problems reported:
Trooper Betsy Randolph, a spokeswoman for the Department of Public Safety, said that no problems had been reported as a result of the implementation of HB 1804.
“We haven’t had any problems so far,” she said. “And we don’t anticipate them.”
Randolph said that no one should be afraid to bring in their documents to request an identification card.
“What we don’t want is immigrants thinking that if they come to DPS to get an ID card they’re going to be arrested on the spot,” she said. Also, earlier in the day, Clark Curry, an Oklahoma leader of the John Birch Society, delivered to Gov. Brad Henry’s office a petition opposing amnesty and benefits for undocumented immigrants. The petition, which called on members of Congress to reject amnesty, included 2,700 signatures gathered at the 2006 Oklahoma State Fair.

People who are anti-illegal should not use the services provided by illegals then. especially the ones who post such hateful messages. Otherwise they're hypocrits. That means picking and choosing restaurants, not driving down roads paved by illegals, not visiting parks maintained by illegals, not living in houses built by illegals, etc.

It's funny how 'the reform is unjust and will force families to separate', but 'migrants' had no concern when they decided to go to America and leave broken families behind
The new laws are going to take these people back to Mexico which will fix the families
I would like to move to Oklahoma

First of all, "heather" your an idiot!!
-
And 2nd, How can 1804 be unconstitutional? Do "illegal" immigrants have any rights under the U.S. constitution?
-
Rivera & orta are the mexican version of sharpton & jackson and they have a bigger agenda than just HB1804

Illegal is illegal If americans break the law we are prosecuted. Its hard to prosecute someone if we do not know who they are.The system maybe backed up but it was backed up when my Italian and Irish family were trying to enter this country. And, another thing they had to learn and speak our language and bring something to the table like a valuable trade! this HB 1804 is great I just hope it stays in effect for good.

r.g.quiett, My grandparents are hispanic and I am a citizen. I am 100% in favor of HB1804. This bill doesnt break up families. Illegals can take their family with them. I have no problem with that. They do have a choice. They shouldnt be here to begin with. If their families suffer it is only because they caused it. I guess maybe this wasnt a better life for them was it. NOW they are trying to convince the country they are patriotic. BAH. I guess everyone on protest took a crash course in the pledge of alligence. It is bull. Go back to your native country and get in line with the rightous people waiting and doing things the correct way. We WANT those people here because they have showed us they have the right temporment to be here. The ones in line show great respect unlike the border jumpers! I say they should not stay in oklahoma, we obviously dont want them here, so why would they want to be here. Just to whine all the time about how mistreated they are. I assure you Oklahoma citizens will not change their attitudes. It will be a hostile enviroment for them. If they stay here illegally the hostility will grow.

#5 Your comment was great. Taking in consideration I believe the procedures are in place as such for a reason. To prevent an extreme invasion of immigrants. Our country can only hold so many. It is like a bag can only hold so much fluid before it bursts. To prevent devastation in this country it must be like that. But when people ignore the process because they want to and launch a massive invasion it has to be stopped. Period. To much of a good thing is bad. That is what has happened here. It has to be controlled whether they like it or not. It has nothing to do with racism, hate or bigotry. It is all about the survival self preservation of our nation.

Why is Rev. Miguel Rivera spreading the story when it is simply NOT true?
And to those who do not know the Bible but continue try to use it to ask WWJD?
Matthew 22:21 Jesus said in answer to whether one should pay their taxes: “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s; and to God the things that are God’s.” Romans 13:1 “Let every person be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God and those which exist are established by God.” If the law of the land is that everyone must pay taxes then that is what we must do if we want to live here. It is the law!
(And no, just because you are charged sales tax at the store does not mean you are "paying your taxes". Anyone using that lame excuse, means they are absolutely ignorant about the laws of this land. A three year old paying with their birthday money is charged sales tax at the store but that doesn't mean she is "paying her taxes".

Illegals and citizens married to illegals should have considered the ramifications of ignoring the laws. Just like people who cook meth or rob banks. I guess you could say they rob banks to better their life for themselves and their families. If we give way to illegals for that reason then they will have to accept that excuse for many crimes. I dont think we should allow illegal aliens to be above the law because of families. Otherwise it would be discrimination. We cannot give them amnesty because there could be thousands of middle east terrorists in the midst getting amnesty also. We all have seen what they can do. So it is not going to happen people. We cannot allow it because of our families. We must keep them safe. That is our job. Illegals have that responsibility also but they chose to be irresponsible, something we cant afford to do.

Citizens of Mexico, you have NO RIGHTS in these United States of America. If you are here illegally, you are breaking laws of these United States of America. And, if identified as an illegal citizen, you should be apprehended, locked up and then DEPORTED back to YOUR country. Now, do you understand?

Shut your pie hole! We would avoid all those places and services if we could be for sure no Illegal was lurking in the ranks. This new Bill will make it easier to avoid ANYTHING that has to do with someone who is criminally here! It's not just illegal, it's CRIMINALLY ILLEGAL!

what about the talk of angry illegals sabotaging food? i am glad they are being forced out. do you think they are defecating on your produce in the fields and spitting on your food in the restaurants? the same goes for the chinese. i think there is a campaign in that country to sicken everybody around them so they can try to have it all. the folks in japan will not touch anything made in china - especially food products. it's been that way for several years now.

the illegals should be working this hard to make their country better. maybe they can take cathy taylord with them and she can show them how to make life better in mexico. they need to stand up against their corrupt government and country. why do they want to stay here and be like slave laborers? they can't possibly be proud of that can they? they need to overturn that sleazy fox running their country and stand up for their RIGHTS in mexico.

It is criminal that the so-called "clergy" is spreading rumors and fear among the Latino community. They have absolutely nothing to fear if they are here legally. If they are not here legally, they have nothing to fear if they leave.

Thank God for the "day without immigrants" over a year ago. It showed how racist and bigoted many of the illegals really are.
Burning American flags, displaying foreign flags above the US flag, shouting racist insults against Americans, talking nonsense about "reconquista" of lands "stolen" from them, etc.
It really woke up Americans to the real threat of the illegals invading our country!

Ask yourselves a question: does any other Country on the Planet allow open borders and offer illegal aliens citizenship without due process?
The answer is obviously no. Why should the USA be any different?

Please people, think before you send something hateful or something that you could later regret. You might think you can say anything you want because it is anon but in reality when you post a message anywhere, your computer's IP address is logged. IP addresses are identifiers like house numbers or phone numbers. The exact computer can be found and even if you are at a library, there are ways of knowing who sent something. This is also true when sending e-mail....even with a yahoo or hotmail account. It identifies the computer no matter where in the world it is.
