Hispanics claim targeting

Some police are profiling Hispanics in the wake of the state’s new anti-illegal immigration law, the Rev. Victor Orta said Friday. KELLY KERR / Tulsa World

Police are accused of singling out immigrants.

A small number of rogue police officers are targeting undocumented immigrants in attempts to have them deported two days after House Bill 1804 went into effect, Tulsa Hispanic leaders said Friday.

Officers will always take the law into their own hands and cross the line, the Rev. Victor Orta said at a press conference.

Police officers recently pulled over a legal American Hispanic while he was driving with his girlfriend and later arrested him because he couldn't prove his identity, Orta said.

The police then told the girlfriend that she should feel lucky that the bill hadn't gone into effect yet, or she would have faced felony charges for "transporting" an illegal immigrant Orta said.

He also spoke of area Hispanics being asked for green cards upon entering their respective apartment complexes.

"The panic level is high," Orta said.

He declined to provide specific details on the incidents, including names.

"I want to protect their privacy," Orta said.

Russell Abbott, an attorney representing many illegal immigrants, also believes local law enforcement are racially profiling Hispanics.

Officers are looking to hand out nuisance traffic tickets in hopes of catching illegal aliens, he said.

"On the surface, it seems like discrimination," Abbott said.

Tulsa County Undersheriff Brian Edwards has said the sheriff's office is only checking the residency status of people who are arrested, not victims or witnesses.

The new law makes it a felony to knowingly transport illegal aliens; creates state barriers to hiring illegal immigrants; requires state contractors to check the immigration status of workers after July 1; and requires proof of citizenship to receive certain government benefits.

Tulsa resident LouAnn Beavers attended the news conference, held at the Greater Tulsa Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, as a concerned citizen.

Beavers said she has many friends in fear of deportation, which would split their families.

"I know someone who may pack up her grandchildren and drive to Mexico to meet the children's father once he is arrested and deported by police," she said.

Orta said he believe that police aren't planning to raid homes or set up road blocks to capture Hispanics.

However, after learning the Tulsa County Sheriff's Office planned to conduct a routine roadside safety check Friday night, Orta warned Hispanics to stay home at all costs.

"There's a need to be cautious," Orta said.

The sheriff's office said the roadblock wasn't targeting illegal immigrants and was part of a continuing traffic safety effort.

Connection Clinic, a federally qualified health clinic, plans to offer help for Hispanic children traumatized by events.

"We have bilingual counselors and psychologists to help the children cope during this difficult time," said Laurie Paul, the executive director.

Orta said many children need counseling due to broken families and other reasons.

Of COURSE the Hispanics claim targeting. I certainly hope THAT doesn't come as a surprise, folks. To the Hispanic Community, especially those who needlessly stress out about being "targeted": our laws that govern living and working in this country illegally -- spelled out, that means "you are NOT either a natural-born or naturalized American citizen -- are very clear. Yes, the citizenship process can be very long and complicated, but here's the key, folks: YOU DON'T WAIT UNTIL YOU'RE ALREADY IN LEGAL TROUBLE WITH THE POLICE TO GET THE PROCESS STARTED. Here's the point, people: our police and other officials may not be able to make you follow our laws to begin with, but if you get caught living and working in the state of Oklahoma without being able to produce the proper documentation, they can certainly make you wish you had. To all the Hispanics who want to whine about being targeted: if you're NOT legal, then you need to start taking steps to get that way. If you ARE legal, then quit worrying about it. If you follow the law and do what you're supposed to, then you have nothing to worry about. If you don't, you're eventually going to be discovered and deported. That's called screwing YOURSELF and, unfortunately, no amount of whining or disrespecting American law is going to change that fact. It's up to the Hispanic communities in this country to decide for themselves what happens to the people are members of those communities. If you want to stay here, then do it legally. If you don't, then go back to Mexico -- and take your whining with you.

Why dont we just call this new law what it is a buch of bull. There is only one difference in what we are doing now and what Hittler did and that is we are not killing them just because they are not legal. If you want to stop and think about it the only people who are legal here are the natavie americans. So why dont we pass a law and send every person who is not an Indain packing and tell them to get out of our state. The people were not hurting anyone they had a job made money and spent there money that was a plus to our ecomoy. Now what do you think is going to happen. Nothing good I can tell you that.

I certainly hope the Police are not doing racial profiling. However, that does not in any case, excuse those here illegally. Indeed, the racial profiling, if any exists, could not have occurrred if they had not broken the law first.

While I sympathize with those legally here on having friends, or family deported, that again gives them no excuse for breaking the law. Indeed isn't transporting, harboring, part of the federal immigration law too? Those here legally also have an obligation to follow our laws.

OP 3:

Regarding the comment quoted below. There are vitually no countries in the world without immigration laws at this point. Many, indeed most, have stricter immigration laws as well as stricter nationality laws. As we line in a great and free country, although it does have its problems, you can freely state your view. However, I believe it is irresponsible for us to not have and enforce immigration law as well as base that law upon the needs of our Nation. If you were ever to research history of this country and other countries you would find that when a nation works for its citizens is when it is best. All nations working for their citizens would make the world a much better place.

Let us all support more and more checkpoints by The County Sherrif and the Tulsa Police Department. This will identify those who drive with no license and no insurance. If the "reverands" use their position to encourage illegal activity, then take away their tax-exempt status and put them in jail if they harbor law breakers.

To #2, clearly you do not know much about the process to become a citizen. Those who have started the process 4 years ago are still waiting for papers. Those who have not have been issued tax ID numbers by our government to open bank accounts and buy houses and PAY TAXES! The government has failed to handle the volume if immigrants and has created this back log. The new law is a knee jerk move to make Oklahomas un educated voters happy. It does not address the issue or fix anything. We will all feel the effects of this loss of labor, loss of sales tax and many are and will suffer. Law enforcement is stuck enforcing something that does not make sense and they know it. The problem is a national problem with immigrantion and our state elected official have simply compounded the problem.

I have encountered many roadside check points where traffic was lined up with officers checking license and insurance. This is perfectly acceptable. Drunks, unlicensed drivers, uninsured drivers have a reason to think twice if they know officers will be doing this. It keeps everyone on their toes and thinking twice. I dont think they are targeting anyone in specific and no one can prove they are. You basically could say they are targetting anyone who is driving illegal. Unfortunately illegal aliens are driving illegal so I guess illegals, drunk drivers, unlicensed drivers and uninsured drivers, are targeted. SO nothing wrong with that. OH yea and lets not forget expired tags. Rev. and his illegal buddies are just causing chaos and trying to make a point but you know what it wont work. Politicians and lawmakers will see right through their juvenile tactics.

"OLD RUSTY"

.

Are you off your ever lovin' rocker??

.

It's like this, My kids are fighting and my son halls off and smacks his sister in the face! He says; "Well she hit me last week!" Now, I didn't see that happen last week and I can't very well punish her based on "hearsay" but I did however witness my sons actions and he will be dealt with appropriately! So, the issue today is not how the vietnamese refugees got here but how are we going to deal with the current immigration problems.

.

Have you ever been involved in any kind of accident with someone who is not insured? It doesn't matter if they are legal or illegal! The LAW requires that a driver has at least "Liabilty Insurance Coverage" on their vehicle.

.

Just as in the case of "Legal Citizenship" The LAW requires that a person be able to document that they are here in this country legally.

.

How many times do you think (just for the sake of the argument, lets use a mexican for example) that there is a crime committed by lets say juan vasquez, well mr. vasquez is here illegally and because of his current misfortunes, he is going back to mexico to visit his wife and kids until he feels it is safe to return. If a traffic check point should catch such a person, than that's good news because otherwise, ultimately, you and I have to pay for the trouble that they have caused. The last time I checked, a good ol' boy who is not playin' by the rules has just as much of a chance of gettin' caught in a road block as does mr vasquez!

It is my hope that the authorities will step up and conduct more driver license checkpoints. That will rid us of illegals and all the citizens who do not belong in traffic.

Mr. Orta needs to stop assaulting us with his brand of justice. Enough already!

Rev. orta, Jackson, Sharpton, etc. are all "Race Baiters". They don't help anyone except themselves. When will people wake up to that fact?

If you are here illegally, you have no gripes, it was your decision to come here.

I have the utmost respect for the Mexicans who have come to this country legally and for those who are presently going through the process to become US citizens. Great people,
