Immigration law affecting ag sector
By AP Wire Services
Published:

Watch a slide show and read all the stories in a series on the immigration of thousands of people from Casa Blanca to Tulsa.
Read all of the Tulsa World’s coverage of House Bill 1804.
LAWTON (AP) -- Oklahoma's new anti-illegal immigration law has some farmers and agricultural businesses scrambling for laborers as Hispanic workers fearful of being deported stay away from work.
House Bill 1804, which went into effect on Thursday, gives local authorities more enforcement options against undocumented workers and increases penalties against employers who hire or harbor illegal immigrants.
Chris Ellison of the Motley Gin in Hollis said he is worried about the future of his operation after he had to cut his labor force by 50 percent and cease ginning during the night shift.
"In the small communities where you've got seasonal work, it's hard to find legal people who want to work," Ellison said. "I'm down to one crew because I can't find enough help to run 24 hours a day anymore."
In seasons past Ellison said he had 30 to 40 applicants for the seasonal jobs, and now he's only getting about eight or nine per season.
Stopping the night shift, he said, will force him to work three
to four weeks longer into the season.
"My only option is to cut back on labor that I have to have, and that's not going to help anybody," he said.
David Lingle, gin manager for the Red River Gin at the Tillman Producers Co-op in Frederick, said while he makes sure his employees have the documentation they need to work for him, the law has intimidated even legal workers from coming to Oklahoma during the cotton-ginning season.
He said he has had to recruit from a labor pool that doesn't want to do the work or doesn't work out if they are hired. Lingle said workers are paid more than $700 a week.
"It's the sorriest help I've ever seen in my life," Lingle said. "The ones that are born and raised here are just not willing to do the work. This law is putting us in a bad situation."
On the other hand, Jimmy Kinder Jr., who farms wheat and runs cattle in Cotton County, prefers using domestic labor in his operation 12 miles west of Walters.

There is a way to get temporary help from other countries.Citizens of other countries can get a work permit. This permit allows legal, and eager workers to come to this country and work for 6 months and then go back to country of origin and renew the work permit for another 6 months.

Well now they will have to pay a living wage, and all of this BS about it hurting the economy and we will have fruit and such rotting in the fields is just propaganda. We as Americans will find a way to have machines do it or they will pay a decent wage. Also now are schools will have fewer students and we wont have hospitals that are going bankrupt like in Mexifornia. Hang in thier patriots we are and we will win this battle and we will have a better country for our children.

I have no sympathy or regret. Businesses should have been hiring legal and or americans all along. I guess they will have to increase the pay roll or look a little harder. Naturally the tulsa world is seeking out the few this bill is going to hurt.... Not worried in the least. GO HB1804

"Lingle said workers are paid more than $700 a week."
That is for 84 hrs worked not 40hrs. In any other industry or construction the pay would be 12- 20 dollars an hour. You get what you pay for Lingle, illegal or otherwise.

You know what? This has been going on for quite some time.......People here and there mad at others for trying to work in the US......First it was those pesky Germans and Irish, around the 1880s and so forth. Then it was the blacks that were finally freed."American" people did not want to compete with them for jobs.......Then the Chinese......now the Mexicans. There will always be a certain "group", if you will, that will be targeted with plenty of excuses about how they are dirty criminals and how they are disrispectful to others. Its all in the history books. But let me tell you something. It doesnt matter if you are white black yellow or brown......There are always bad people on all sides. How do you know that every illegal alien is bound to be a criminal. Just because they wanted something better for their family. what, it is illegal to dream? So this excuse about Hispanics being criminals and so forth..... Read a psychology book, read a histroy book, get informed and if any of you haters call yourself Christians, then you should remember that God said to "Love your neighbor". That also includes "dirty criminals" that you call illegal immigrants. I know plenty of people who are criminals and they were not even illegal.Yes there are some hispanics that are not what you call "citizen" material, but there are also other peolpe who are citizens, and they have done horrible things too. Think about that......

I was raised is Oklahoma and came to california for school, never went back but I must say I am married to a Mexican, I've even traveled all over Mexico and some parts look much like home. The one thing I wanted to add is there are work permits for mexicans to seasonally work here but not enough are issued, alot of the ones that are the people use at border towns, alot of farming in California/mexico border. I just wanted everyone to think of one thing, in California at the stores alot of our produce is imported from Mexico. They even passed a law that it must be posted country of orgin. So with all these new laws who's going to benefit? The Mexican government. I know the higher wages will drive up US produce prices not to mention the gas to deliver. California's already have shown they look for best buys in market so they will buy imported. Mexican government gets outport taxes. So we've helped mexican government, ran our farmers out of the market, and left millions of illegal worker's trapped. The Mexican government does little to nothing to help their citizens ummm that's why they come here.. Gotta be a better solution to this problem than running our farmers out of business. They alot have been hang on for years on government help. Just my 2 cents,

One more note, I worked at the Fresno IRS service center for several years. In research department. I was suppose to figure out when several people used same number which one was the real person and issue a * SSN to rest. the * meant they could use the Number for tax filing but not secure work with it. The people who filed with a * number do not get their return and IRS pockets that money. most illegals use fake number get taxes out of their checks that are collected and kept by IRS, but they (IRS) never admit that... I wonder why? because it adds up to millions every year.

Just read a news article about illegal workers in security at Chicago airport.
Homeland Security? How much has Homeland Security cost us over the past few years, yet we do not control our borders?
From the article: Dozens use fake IDs to work at Chicago airport -
"The airport raid, which netted 23 undocumented workers from Mexico, showed that rigid new security protocols implemented in the six years since the terrorist attacks of September 11 are still not working."
"But 110 employees of one contractor on site used social security numbers which either did not exist or belonged to other people, some of whom were dead, according to a criminal complaint.
One undocumented worker looking for work at the airport, who was actually a government informer, was told to look through a box with about 20 airport security badges and "pick one with a picture that most closely resembled his own likeness" the complaint said."
These employers should be dealt with harshly!

This one time i was driving, I saw this hobo with a sign that said "Work for food..... Nah I want beer" Yeah not given that guy money, but i have to give him some credit because he told the truth. God bless the hobos they make about $300 in a couple of days and they don't even have to pay taxes

Dear uniformed,
my wife worked at a rehab center for many years. Most of those bums, as you call them, were at one time productive citizens who paid taxes. Our social services were invented to help people like that make an attempt to get back on their feet and since they used to pay taxes they have every right to use them.
Most illegal labor is paid under the table, you know that. Even the ones that commit a felony by using a fake ss# take far more out of our society than they give back. The only ones that don't are the ones paying to rent an apt, aren't driving a car and are living alone.
The reality is that the entire family comes here, uses our health care sytem, schools, social services and drive on our roads WITHOUT insurance. Furthermore, they take away available low cost housing, jobs that require little skill and on top of it all they take billions out of the economy in money sent back to their home Country in remittances.
To state that all homeless are white is an ignorant, racist comment.
It's already too late to stop HB1804! Enjoy!

Hey Mac
I thinks he was talking about the bums that will cuss you out if you try to give them food or a job. They don't want either, they want money and they smell like liquor. I believe a report was done on these people w/the sign. Turned out some had better cars than most of us.
FYI how can you beg for money on a cell phone.
To blame everything on the illegals is ignorant on your part. Since we cant tell who is illegal and who is not. But according to most they don't speak Spanish. So I will make this comment.
Last week when I was in line to pay, it wasn't someone w/foreign language paying w/food stamps. Guy with wife and 2 kids look very healthy and should be working.
Anyways look around Tulsa the bums are the ones that dont want a shelter. They come into our church to get warm when there is John 3:16 that could help.

ment to say they don't speak English, what they speak is Spanish.
I was at the kids doctor today paying for their flu shots. There were people speaking spanish and I think the other couple was speaking some type of Arab language. Yeah the white guy was speaking spanish to this lady. The lady was speaking English. Now that is cool, when we all try and get along.
Mac you should try and play with the rest of the minorities. We might learn from each other. Who knows they might be legal.

Anita, I agree... I know quite a few high school or college age kids that would love having a seasonal job making that much. I don't think they are advertising for legal workers though. I think it is all word of mouth through the illegal community. I am quite sure that an illegal wouldn't gripe about the hours or the pay and the huge ag businesses know this and have been counting on this for years. They can say all they want that Americans don't want to work and that we are lazy, but I don't believe they really want to give us a chance.

#108 Very good points. Many people would jump at the chance to make some extra Christmas money doing seasonal work.
#109 You are showing your ignorance of the economy. Perhaps taking a college class in finance will help you understand that people sending money out of the US does not help our economy. That is why we have import and export laws. We have to bring the money in at the same rate it is going out. I don't see Mexico or any other country sending the US money. We are sending them money in addition to the money its citizens send.

#109...your post doesn't even make sense (partly because you need to learn to spell and use correct grammar/punctuation). I still don't think this guy even made a real effort to get legal workers. If he made an effort to ADVERTISE for help, he'd get it. I know I'm not the only person (as already illustrated on here) that knows or people more than willing to do the work...who are legal (and definitely not lazy).

Simple economics, you can take any job no matter how hard and keep raising the rate of pay and you WILL fill it.

while job huntin'
, Tulsa (11/7/2007 1:44:17 PM)
I've had some free time while job hunting and I've been spending some unproductive time reading postings on this forum. But some of the comments got me to look at this new law
from a different perspective, especially since I'm bilingual and married to a Latino and also was raised by a Latino(Mexican-Legal Immigrant). I'm not latina, but have always stood up for latino people legal or illegal
because people are just people in my book. You respect me, I respect you. Anyway, I've been looking for work the past 2 months and have not had any luck. Do online search, go out and fill out applications, the whole 9 yards. I'm a Jill of all trades and am not afraid of hard work. Well, yesterday I went to a business that's known here in town that
cleans houses, because I'm getting desperate for a job. While I sat and first filled a 85 question survey to basically see what kind of employee I will make, I overheard the owner talking on the phone to another business owner and telling him how to get around this new law. I spent about hour and half filling out paper work, to then be told by the receptionist that don't call, us we'll call you.Mind you this is for a cleaning job,in which I have broad experience, plus I'm bilingual. It clearly brought home to me why people are bent out of shape over illegal immigration. Just wanted to put in my .02

Thanks for posting your experience 'job huntin'.
Now multiply that times the number of legal workers who USED to do the construction work, the roofing, the masonry and so forth.
I'm sure many of the displaced workers have found other ways of earning a living and may or may not return to their former industries.
My brother works in construction and has been fortunate that he works for someone who does not hire illegals.
His wages haven't changed. His boss still makes money and life continues.
Some of the angry illegals need to realize that we (America and OK), managed before the invasion of illegals and we will manage again afterward. Those employers who only wanted unfair profits can either get legal or look for a job.
Legal people have been providing, allowing and been discriminated against long enough.
I sincerely hope that employers who continue to break the law are prosecuted.
If they weren't giving all the jobs to illegals, we wouldn't have the enormous problem we're faced with now.

We are talking about farming... working 80-90 hours a week is not uncommon when you are bringing in a crop. You have to get it in before the next rain, freeze, or before it rots on the vine. I use to work in the hayfield and I remember spending 14-18 hours out in the field a day, using a big spotlight at night. I certainly wouldn't call it a sweatshop, although sweating was part of it.
