WASHINGTON -- A veteran U.S. senator announced Tuesday that he is looking into generous salaries, luxury cars and private jets provided to six televangelists, including three who serve as regents for Oral Roberts University.

"I'm following up on complaints from the public and news coverage regarding certain practices at six ministries," said Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa, the top Republican on the Senate Finance Committee.

"The allegations involve governing boards that aren't independent and allow generous salaries and housing allowances and amenities such as private jets and Rolls Royces."

In his announcement, Grassley revealed he has sent detailed letters to six major media ministries:

Randy and Paula White of Without Walls International Church and Paula White Ministries of Tampa, Fla.

Benny Hinn of World Healing Center Church Inc. and Benny Hinn Ministries of Grapevine, Texas.

David and Joyce Meyer of Joyce Meyer Ministries of Fenton, Mo.

Kenneth and Gloria Copeland of Kenneth Copeland Ministries of Newark, Texas.

Bishop Eddie Long of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church and Bishop Eddie Long Ministries of Lithonia, Ga.

Creflo and Taffi Dollar of World Changers Church International and Creflo Dollar Ministries of College Park, Ga.

Hinn, Copeland and Dollar serve on ORU's board of regents.

Grassley's letters asked the ministers and their organizations to respond to numerous questions and submit certain information for his review.

His requests covered the minister's compensation, housing allowances and other expenses, jets and cars used by them, credit card statements, employment agreements between the ministers and their churches, love offerings, audited financial statements, names and addresses of boards of directors, dates and locations of board meetings.

This news saddens me. As a believer, I know this abuse of God's people is true. It's

time for the money changers to be thrown

from the temple.

Offerings used for Trump Towers, Rolls Royces,

An airport with a fleet of planes, It goes on and on.

Materialism at its best!

Money is the root of all evil and corrupts everything it becomes involved with even religion. It is time for America to wake up and realize capitalism must have some restraints.

I like Grassley. I think he'll go about

this with some determination to get some-

thing that is scarce in televangelism....

simple truth.

So, if these people are on the up and up,

and I don't think they are, they'll lay out

their financial records and tell Grassley

to have at it.

There are going to be some extremely red

faces here, at the very least. There could

be some jail time for a bunch of wolves.

Let the chips fall where they may.

I am wondering... Can some curious senator really demand these statments? Okay even if they do... What can he do about it... "Um...Mr. Copeland, can you please not spend so much money???" Those ministries are good a spending the money within it's legal limits.

I disagree somewhat. Let em ask for $$ but when they start to become threatening or abusive about it i.e. "if you don't give me $ such and such terrible thing will happen" then they've crossed the line.

.

I have to admit, as critical as I am about WOFfer christianity, I'm extremely ambivalent about the govt getting involved in ministries. But these people cross that abusive line every day and think they can get away with it.

It's about time someone looked into this. Churches are supposed to be non-profit organizations. If a "minister" or head of a church is making these huge salaries, using private jets, spending money for personal use (what Oral Roberts is accused of) then the money is being misspent. I've often wondered how in the world someone could have these HUGE salaries as a head of a church and still claim that the church is a non-profit organization.

Personally, I think ALL churches should be taxed. Churches are big business today.

First thing these Woffers are going to scream is "persecution!!" "attack of The Devil!!!!!!!", the same thing the yell when anybody criticizes them. They believe they are above reproach, because they spent a few hours with the Bible, interpreting it to mean they themselves should be rich people at the expense of regular Christians.

.

Grassley needs to be careful about his recommendations upon his findings. Focus on what they DO, not on what they believe - it's going to be a very tricky line.

If you go to Senator Grassley's website, you can read the actual letters sent to each ministry.
