The university raised $8.8 million for a new student center since 2001. The site is still empty.

Oral Roberts University raised $8.8 million starting in 2001 for a student center that still hasn't been built.

The school has used some of the money for scholarships and operations, officials said Wednesday.

After the project was put on hold, an anonymous donor who gave more than half of the total helped the university decide how to use the money, a spokesman said.

In responding to requests from the Tulsa World, the university released details but not records about money raised for the center.

A university spokesman, Jeremy Burton, said in a statement that ORU still plans to build the center.

ORU President Richard Roberts used a ceremonial shovel more than six years ago to break ground for the student center. ORU said then that the project would cost $17.5 million.

Roberts announced months later in July 2001 that the school had received a $5 million anonymous gift for construction of the center. ORU's alumni magazine reported that students and other donors followed with pledges of at least $2 million for the center.

One

of the donors was the university's founder, Oral Roberts, who gave $100,000 during the International Charismatic Bible Ministries Conference.

The site, however, remains vacant.

George Paul, the president of the ORU alumni association's board in 2001, referred comments about the project to ORU. Other board members did not return calls seeking comment.

Burton said ORU spent $3.6 million of the anonymous donor's money on the demolition of a building, relocation of departments, utilities, work on Fred Creek and professional plans.

The project account contains $227,089, his statement said.

The project was put on hold after Sept. 11, 2001, because of a decline in donations, the statement said.

However, in 2002, Richard Roberts, his wife, Lindsay Roberts, and one of their daughters stood before a silver donation box as they pressed two buttons to implode an old classroom building on the site of the future center. University officials said then that the student center was to be completed by 2003.

By 2005, Richard Roberts was referring to the student center as one of several projects in "the dream stage," according to his column in the alumni magazine.

ORU's Web site is still seeking donations to the ORU Alumni Foundation for the student center.

Burton said the university needs at least $10 million before it continues the project. Architects estimated in 2001 that the next phase, pouring the foundation and building the shell, would cost about $15 million, Burton's statement said.

The university has said the center would include a food court, computer center, bank, post office and dry cleaners.

The $8.8 million raised for the project went to two nonprofit entities: Oral Roberts University and the ORU Alumni Foundation, the university said Wednesday. ORU did not say how the donations were split between the university and its alumni foundation.

IRS records show that between 1998 and 2006, the ORU Alumni Foundation never held more than $788,000 in temporarily restricted funds.

The tax records show that Oral Roberts University received $10 million in temporarily restricted funds in the 2000-2001 tax year. The amount of temporarily restricted funds held by ORU declined from $23 million that year to about $12.6 million during the next five years, records show.

Donations to nonprofit organizations for specific projects must be used for those purposes unless the donors agree to a change in purpose.

The IRS requires nonprofits to reflect these amounts in an annual tax report, known as a 990 form, as temporarily restricted funds until they are spent on the project.

These are all questions the BOR needs to address; in short, a world of opportunities awaits for the BOR of ORU.

.

5. Target the individual donors of the entire donor base. In the 1990s, we found that we do not have a “stock market” but rather a “market of stocks.” With regards to the current donor base, the same holds true. As a result, the current donor base is not effectively target marketed.

.

Currently, the donor base is considered one large homogeneous unit. This as we all know is faulty reasoning which will bring about an ineffective strategy for income generation. Many posts have suggested that the seed faith teaching only targets the particular brand of congregants in certain “word of faith” type organizations, and may have been pretty much played out among the congregants of other organizations.

.

How can different branded congregants be motivated to release valuable resources? How can different congregants be inspired to release resources of cash, jewelry, gold, stocks, bonds, real estate, and other non-cash resources which can be effectively transformed into hard cash and cash equivalents for quick income generation by the NP Corp? The NP Corps can develop new teaching which will motivate and inspire a greater percentage of the donor base to release their resources quickly and efficiently.

.

While the seed faith teaching may work in the basic cut and dry “word” church, what new creative teachings can be presented and promoted to the congregants of Baptist organizations, Congregationalists, Methodists, etc.? Can the BOR develop creative new teachings, as well as teaching styles, to the different branded congregants among these different donor subsets in order to trigger the largest release of funds in the shortest amount of time possible?

.

Having first realized we no longer have a single “donor market,” in order to effectively exploit the diverse “market of donors” the NP Corps need to take frequent surveys of the donors. As ORU alumni, what type of church do they currently attend? Is it a standard “word of faith” church? Do they donate when a seed faith symposium is promoted in their market territory? Specifically, how much of their income is released given a certain number of seed faith messages? How much of their income is released when another message is promoted? What specific messages cause them to release the greatest amount of income? Once surveys are compiled, and subsequently sent repeatedly on regular timeframes, the diverse market of donors will appear and hence give rise to the diversity of messages necessary to extract the maximum amount of resources from the market of donors.

.

6. Insurance proceeds, debt leverage. Currently a number of organizations have insurance plans exclusively for their adherants; consider aarp, unions, safe driver auto clubs, etc.

The BOR can exploit income producing opportunities by offering life insurance plans to the respective donor bases, eg ORU alumni. Also, health insurance plans, auto insurance plans, home insurance plans, etc can be all the more profitable for the BOR. Plans such as unsecured credit for ORU alumni can be implemented quickly and effectively; does the ORU student body, alumni, and parents of the student body have personalized ORU alumni credit cards? Have the parents effectively been targeted for gold and/or platinum credit cards with credit card checks sent at all appropriate times of the year (eg Holiday Season) for maximum income generation? How about secured lines of credit? Home equity lines? Auto loans? With the proper research done by the right consulting organizations, the BOR can utilize credit bureaus such as Equifax and Trans Union to secure the most income on loans from the most possible donors via credit cards, auto loans, and home equity lines of credit, while at the same time mitigating potential loan defaults the maximum extent possible by packaging the loans into Collateralized Mortgage Obligations which they can sell to the their respective markets of donors.

In short, the BOR and their network of contacts in many other NP Corps have the chance to reach more potential donors and maximize their operating profits more than ever before if they put some creative plans into action, and now is their window of opportunity.

.

While we are not idealists, we realize that the BOR can make indeed make a change for the better if they act now. The funds can be extracted market from donor bases and the income generated to a greater degree than ever before if they all work together.

.

We hope for the best, and we urge our friends to contact the BOR and NP boards nationwide

to consider what we say and to take up the challenge for more income generation.

.

True, many on the BOR, and many on other interlocking boards as well, have done an excellent job creating business ventures, running profitable small business enterprises, and successfully implementing business startups, in their quest for purchasing real estate, boats, automobiles, artwork, jewelry, gold, silver, and aircraft in excess of $20M per airplane, but the days of small business startups and the days of ignoring the international corporate community are over.

.

We must act now, and today is our chance. Please take action now, BOR, and do not wait.

We as the ORU community and the entire faith based community of potential donors call upon you now for action, and we place our full faith and trust in your ability to get the job done and accomplish the task, and we thank you in advance.

.

Thank you, to all of you on the BOR, who have heard our plea.

To #827. 11/14/2007 8:40:02 AM, ~Sojourner, Adair

****************

"alot of times actions speak louder than words... and one can easily slide into flesh and miss God by preaching at someone, rather than living it out as a witness. some people have heard all the verses and reasons why they should accept faith into their lives, but they are looking and watching and seeing no evidence of it in those who claim to have it... sometimes we are called to simply be a witness by our walk and interactions with others... they are watching us running around in our flesh, trying to force our will, when what we ought to be doing is listening to Him.

just my unsolicited opinion lol"

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Did Jesus say just be a witness Sir from Adair? Or did he say "...Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature." ???
I was under the impression that He wanted us to, not only go into the world and preach, but to demonstrate His power by:
"Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils.."
It is my humble opinion that most of the time, Christians tend to either be afraid to do these things or they are "ashamed" to be identified with Christ, and so they just say they need to just be a witness, rather than actually witnessing.
Is it scriptural for folks to just sit around and watch other Christians before they decide to be a Christian? I always thought that the word had to be preached and faith came by hearing and hearing by the word of God, not watching other Christians.
As a former student at ORU, a donor to the student center project, a fellow Tulsan, I have to say quite honestly that I have never given to any "person" at ORU, but I have given to God. I would surmise that most givers to ORU fall into the same category as I do. It is not my responsibility to account for ORU's finances, just my own. I obey what is right in my heart and to me it's not about a personality.
If the necessary changes are made, and the school survives, I would donate something for the student center. "Necessary changes' from where I sit, 13 years removed from my ORU experience, would be the appointment of new leadership (not related by blood or marriage to the Roberts), and the implementation of the recommendations of the faculty. I realize there's a lot more to this; I'm simplifying for the sake of time. I've been reading these threads all day and I'm a little tired.
I would love to talk with Ziva about this. In response to #24 my FORMER local pastor was a "friend" of ORU and lives the same way. Also within that church "were" pyramid schemes and the like. I felt I couldn't learn about God in this scenario. I attended Northwestern College in Minesota and learned how to "seperate the wheat from the chaff". I gave to the student center through that local church and have been heartbroken ever since to see nothing on the site. I even took video of the old building while down there so I would have a remembrance of the old. I think this "prosperity" lifestyle is quite widespread and quite disgusting. It has not wavered my belief in God and what he did in my life but rather makes me feel sorry that men can twist so badly over money.
Someone or some persons ought to pay a serious price for this obvious financial mismanagement! I suppose half-truths and coverups are the name of the game now on campus. What about the students who gave and gave with the PROMISE of this being built.............and 6 years later still nothing?? Charges ought to be filed against RR and LR and all the way to the Board of Regents. There has to be laws against this type of conduct!
I agree. Criminal charges ought to be filed against RR and the BOR for these flagrant lies and gross misrepresentations. Taking money from partners and even ORU students ( students who don't HAVE much money! )for a "project" when it's never built. It's ridiculous that people with common sense tolerate this behaviour from Richard Roberts without massive protests across this country from ministry partners, alumni, and former students. Why do people sanction these foolish antics from so-called preachers and evangelists who continue to proclaim they "hear" and "follow" the voice of God? RR desperately needs to come clean before his ministry base and all former students since 2001 who contributed to this Student Center. Is that EVER going to happen? Please..........you know the answer.
ORU ALUMNI ASSN. A PATHETIC JOKE
Co-opted and complicit in an activity that might be illegal.
The pathetic, toothless Alumni Assn. has become an active partner – and enabler --- with the BOR in condoning activity that borders on the criminal.
The IRS, US Postal Inspectors and US Attorney’s office should investigate the case of the missing student center.
We have only the word of ORU that the 5 million dollar donor agreed his or her money be used elsewhere
--- and last Sunday’s TW showed what that word was worth --- nothing.
--- RR issued demonstrably false financial reports to the public via the TW.
--- What value does this statement have? None.
Everyone who donated to this specific project should contact the above US agencies demanding an investigation of the missing Student Center funds..
And the ORU Alumni Assn? --- a pathetic participant, complicit in what could well be an illegal act.
FOLLOW THE MONEY in this case and it could lead to illegal actions.
I wouldn't want to be any ORU employee connected in any way to this.
Well folks the scamming goes all the way back to the good old days when Oral had his old TV show and was miraculaously, "curing on-the-spot", folks with such maladies as polio, cancer, etc.
Oral would knock them in the forehead, they'd fall back in a hysterical swoon and arise fully cured. These "victims" were able to throw away their crutches, canes, wheelchairs and walk away right there in front of God, Oral and everbody! The money rolled in and the rest is pretty sorry history. I just feel sorry for all the legit ORU students, grads and staff. Probably one of the biggest scams in history...and it continues.
