The Picker: Recalling basketball success of yesteryear

Check out the Picker’s Blog: "Censure anybody not voting for McFadden the Heisman."

It seems like only yesterday when:

The TU basketball hall was packed with happy people and was about to pop with energy as a team comprised of under-valued recruiting steals raced deep into the NCAA tournament, with national analysts saying that this was one to watch when it came to the last eight tournament teams standing; or beyond.

The OU basketball team was comprised of leapers and gunners, rocking a house full of football fans making a reasonably smooth transition to hoops, the chief questions to be answered being: Would the Sooners win the Big 12 basketball tournament again? Would OU be a three- or four-seed in the NCAAs?

The OSU basketball team had it all to make another run at a Final Four, except perhaps for two inch es of height at center. Every game was sold out. Once in the great hoop emporium, you couldn't hear yourself think -- you could just feel yourself smile.

The ORU basketball team usually had at least one NBA prospect on its squad, and a D-league cinch. It always won its conference and moved on to the NCAA tournament, where it was usually considered to be a solid sleeper.

Only: WHAT HAPPENED?

Were we too nice as fans, trusting everybody to get it right?

The Picks

SATURDAY

Baylor at OU (-37): Mayday! Mayday!

Warning! Warning!

OU players, coaches and fans beware: it's supposed to be windy Saturday!

And everybody knows what a stiff breeze did to the Sooners in Ames, it messed with their brains and bodies and almost caused the shocking upset.

Some three weeks ago, we said that the one team OU didn't want any more of was Missouri. And guess who said the same thing this week. King Switz!

Tickets for this one, two bucks. And that's in Boren's box.

OU by 35.

Kansas (-5-1/2) at OSU: Many wonder about O-State's mind-set after last week.

But it's not like the Cowboys haven't been there before.

They're there all the time.

Ho-hum, another gridiron nightmare, pass the steak and potatoes.

Here's what KU has done: beaten bums.

Nothing wrong with that.

KU gave up a two-fifths of a hundred to Nebraska!

Could be higher-scoring than OSU-KU basketball.

Can Gundy make a play?

KU by 3.

Houston at Tulsa (-1): Will first to 60 take it?

Here's something of a mixed blessing: As much heat as Coach K is catching at Louisville, maybe coach recruiters will stay away from here.

Huge game -- loser apt to wind up in a bowl that hasn't been invented yet.

Houston by 4.

Arkansas (-1) at Tennessee: Hog fans who want Nutt out have been spending too much time in chat rooms with the mindless.

No replacement could be as good.

Vicious SEC gauntlet has Tennessee still in destruction derby.

Tennessee by 3.

Air Force (-2) at Notre Dame: Who would admit to being head of recruiting for the Irish?

AF by 3.

Kansas State (-8) at Nebraska: And where might Callahan wind up coaching next?

One guess: Canadian assistant in charge of point-after defenses.

Remember the so-called experts who ignored Al Gore and said you had to be able to run to play up north in November?

Brrrr: temp should plunge to 60 at Lincoln kickoff.

K-State by 7.

Texas A & M at Missouri (-17-1/2): Could be inside info on Frannie's last secret newsletter: We stink.

Missouri by 24.

Illinois at Ohio State (-15): Home team played a schedule that makes KU's look tough.

And who gave the Buckeyes a free pass to the title game? ESPN.

Ohio State by 17.

Texas Tech at Texas (-6-1/2): All things considered, couple of dogs.

Texas by 4.

Florida (-6) at South Carolina: Has old bull coach lost it?

Florida by 4.

Sunday

Denver at Kansas City (-3): Bad. Really bad. Quadruple bad.

Booing should start before game.

KC by 6.

Minnesota at Green Bay (-6-1/2): Might try 10-1 defensive scheme on Peterson.

GB by 7.

Jacksonville at Tennessee (-3): Young's stats look like he was assisted off the field halfway through the second quarter: 4 for 14, 111 yards.

And a victory.

Tennessee by 10.

Dallas at the Giants (even): Nothing wrong with Dallas that four or five new defensive players couldn't fix.

Giants by 4.

Indy (-3) at San Diego: Norv Turner could be coaching for his job.

SD by 2.

Monday

San Francisco at Seattle (-10): Could violate network decency standards.

Seattle by 9.

Let's see, last week OSU by three. This week KU by three.Could be the kiss of death pick I guess.

The sports talk pickers are all on the sideline with the worlds best offense for the KU game. At least you have got that going for you.

By the way, on the Missouri "Too Terrifying to Play Again" weekly theme: Oklahoma with no turnovers beats them handily (last game and next game) IF there is one.

KU by 3? You meant three touchdowns right?

There you go again picker bringing up the weather, if you knew anything about football then you would know that wind does affect teams. Your column just keeps getting more asinine.

I guess the picker ran out of things to talk about in football so he rattles on about basketball. He must have gotten tired for bragging about how great the SEC is and how bad the Big 12 is even though the Big 12 has 3 teams ranked in the top 10 and the SEC only has 2 teams.

Dear Rob, of course wind (and other adverse weather conditions) affect teams. But I think the picker's point is we only heard the wind excuse from OU for having a tough time with a terrible ISU team... I certainly didn't hear any of those excuses from the squad that actually lost the game.

Amen Ricky Bobby, it is called clever, good sports writing and it does not exist in this state anywhere except by the Picker, enjoy it while it lasts and quit whining. Yes, ESPN has crowned Ohio St. Pretty boy Herbie is an alum after all right?

OK, first of all, there are only 2 teams truly worthy of the BCS title game based on body of work to this point...LSU who wins despite the moronic head-coaching of Les Miles (let's keep bringing in a cold QB to run the offense in the most critical of situations), the second is Oregon who has played the best and most consistent football of anyone in the nation this year. Their only loss to Cal, who at the time was healthy and playing outstanding football (and really Oregon should have at least tied the game).

Everyone else has major weaknesses...OU-Defensive Secondary is awful (OSU is going to have fun that day on offense), the Big X is a joke and there is not really a team in that conference worthy of even a BCS bowl bid...the reason for parity in most leagues is mediocrity, not that all the teams are good. The SEC has some good teams, but LSU is the only truly outstanding team. The ACC and Big East are jokes. The PAC 10 is slowly rising but every team with the exception of Oregon and Cal, are young and inexperienced (including USC). The likes of Washington, Arizona St., and Stanford because of solid coaching will soon be teams to reckon with and I don't see the likes of ORegon, Cal, and USC dropping off any.

I think the Picker gets it right most of the time, but homers everywhere need to know that the BCS title game, if you want to watch a good game, should be Oregon-LSU. Keep up the good work, but I've beaten you more times than lost to you over the years so maybe I should pick the games and you can write the column.

The previous post from "Rob" is actually my stalker. I will admit, SHE's getting better at posing as me - finally using (my very own)multisyllabic words - in the proper context. Unfortunately, I have to deduct points for plagiarism.

Is it the NIT Picker or The Picker himself, or are they one in the same? Such a mystery!

So, we have Ricky Bobby from Dallas and Roger Staubach of Dallas Cowboys fame...is there a J.R. Ewing in the house?

If not for the arguments, this column would cease to exist. For the most part, it would consist of a bunch of idiots (like yourselves) wearing their arms out patting each other on the back - not very interesting.

The Picker is outpicked by HUNDREDS (sometimes thousands)of readers every week - his objective, and what he does well (compliment warning) is to make controversial comments that create entertaining banter among the rival sports fans.

BA - At this point in the season, I agree with most everything you've said, although I think the jury is still out on Ohio State.

C'mon people. Have you nothing better to do with your time than read what the Picker writes in the hours and minutes between his therapy sessions? Here are some suggestions for better ways to spend your time that rank as intellectual equivalents to the Picker's column: reading comic books...playing Yahtzee...watching Hannity and Combs...playing solitaire...sleeping.

I don't care much about the Picks, judging from your record - that's something we have in common.

Let me save you the keystrokes: "You're aply named." Obviously you've never gotten the jab, World Plucker.

Anyway, judging by this column I don't think you've heeded my advice to always keep on the sunny side of life. So much negativity. Seeing the bad in everyone and everything is becoming tiresome to behold. But I keep hanging in there because occasionaly you do throw in that truly humorous nugget. Here's hoping you get out of your funk.

By jove, Tussle, you're getting close to the truth here. The Picker was once (back in the days when he was the 'Tribune Picker') brimming over with unrestrained wit...with a biting edge. Many was the time he'd have me spewing my morning coffee through my nose (apologies for the mental image) while reading his column, which has always appeared on Thursdays, Tribune or World. But within the past few years, his bile has been directed more generally at his readership (those, that is, who actually can read without moving their lips) and it has become tiresome. Which is why I don't bother with it often. His blogs are excercises in sycophancy and those who don't suck up are denigrated. I guess you could say he's a poor man's Rush Limbaugh or Sean Hannity, in a paper with minimum readership. What? Oh, the MC is telling my my time is up so I'd better go...

WR: I'll take Missouri plus the points in the rematch.

Very smooth picker.I said OU would win in a rematch. You say Missouri will beat the spread. We seem to be having two conversations here.

I bet you have some polyester in your closet.

Just for conversation: Southern Cal has worked through some pretty bad injuries to key people. A healthy SC hitting on all cylinders could be unpleasant for OU in the Fiesta Bowl.

Where is Boise when you need them?

Re: your BCS analysis

Have you had time to notice that the SEC is 5-5 against BCS teams? While the ACC and Big East are 7-8 and the Big 12 is 5-6. But how about the Pac 10, it is 5-3 and the Big 10 is 5-4. Kansas is undefeated and LSU has one loss. Sooooo-LSU is the only team deserving of NC game???

You are just another World Picker nose picker.

PS: you can't pick games or write a column, ergo, you ARE the World Picker.
