Area soldier mourned
Pam and Darrel Carver mourn their son Pvt. Cody Montana Carver on Saturday during services in the Coweta High School gym. Carver, 19, was killed Oct. 30 in Iraq. CORY YOUNG / Tulsa World

On the day before Veterans Day, hundreds turn out to honor a Haskell soldier killed in Iraq.
COWETA -- As the country honored its veterans this weekend, mourners remembered a young Haskell soldier killed in Iraq as a patriot.
Army Pvt. Cody Montana Carver was buried Saturday at Vernon Cemetery after a funeral service with full military honors at the Coweta High School gym.
Hundreds came to pay their respects to the 19-year-old soldier and to support his grieving parents, Darrel and Pam Carver, and brothers Lee and Jake Carver, all of Haskell.
Scores of others, holding miniature American flags, lined Broadway as the funeral procession made its way through the center of town led by motorcycle riders from the Patriot Guard Riders and Rolling Thunder.
Carver volunteered for the Army in November 2006 in its toughest branch -- the infantry.
After completing basic training, Carver was a hometown recruiter for a short time before being sent to Iraq a little more than a month ago.
"This is a sampling of what a life can do in 19 short years," the Rev. Larry Brown said of the people Carver had touched. "Cody will never be forgotten."
Brown, who spent a lot of time with Carver at church camps over the years, said he had wanted to make a difference in the world since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
Carver's father is a Vietnam veteran.
Carver
and two other soldiers were killed Oct. 30 in Salman Pak, Iraq, when enemy forces engaged their unit with small-arms fire and an improvised explosive device, according to the Department of Defense.
Carver served with the 1st and 15th Infantry Regiment and the 3rd Battalion Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division Mechanized.
The military presented three awards to the family for Carver's actions in Operation Iraqi Freedom: the Bronze Star for meritorious service, a Purple Heart and a Good Conduct Medal.
Photographs at the service showed Carver before he was a soldier, as a smiling boy with friends and family in all stages of his life.
He grew up in Coweta, where he liked to race cars, ride motorcycles, skateboard and be with friends.
"Love lives on," Brown said. "As long as there is memory, they'll live on in the heart."
Carver had a diverse group of friends, which showed his capacity to see beyond the surface of people, and there was also much more to Carver than met the eye, Brown said.
Dyeing his hair blue on the eve of church camp became a yearly tradition. But as people got to know him, he went home having made friends with everyone.
"Thank God," Brown said. "Thank God we got to know him. He loved life and it was contagious to those around him."

My thoughts and prayers are with the family of this brave soldier. We appreciate everything he and so many others have done. I pray the family will get through this time and reflect on their son being a hero. God be with you

As a Vet its shameful how every story I read about a dead soldier, Sailor or Marine - they are portrayed as wiling givers of their own life in this corporately run fiasco of a war...I'm so sorry for what our irresponsible country has taken away from you...as a I citizen I feel I am to blame for these deaths for not doing more to stop this war....I'm so sorry....

I knew Cody and he was one of the most giving and caring people I knew. He accepted everyone as a friend and would do anything to help someone out. He would do anything to help someone out, from his friends to people he didnt even know. He was a wonderful friend, person and a soldier for our country and he will be missed. And lets focus on the positive things with this story and not our government. Love ya Cody!

I am so sorry for your loss. I also lost a son at an early age, so I know how you feel. I only wish that this "so-called" war would end. So many young, precious lives lost.

How many more brainwashed drones have to meet their maker before they realize that the Iraqis don't want a Wal-Mart and a Starbucks on every corner?

Why would you disrespect our very brave soilders that serve our great country. They choose to lay down their life so that you can have the freedom of speech to say dumb and idiotic things like you just said.

Red, I will express my opinion whether or not "brave heroes" shoot cruise missiles into Iraqi elementary schools or not. The invasion and illegal occupation of Iraq has nothing to do with freedom of speech. As much as it hurts for "y'all" to admit these soldiers died for corporate greed, not democracy, not freedom. And the 600K+ Innocent Iraqis that these drones have murdered died for nothing at all.

I am so proud of Cody, although I did not know him personally, he was a great friend to my cousin. I thank God that there are brave men and women that will fight for our freedom. I am sorry for the loss his family is feeling.
I do not think that this forum is the place for people to abuse the freedom that so many have risked their lives to give us.
