Fathers of two slain soldiers speak out during Capitol anti-war protest

By Associated Press

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Two Oklahoma fathers of soldiers slain in Iraq say it’s past time to end the United States’ participation in the war.

Warren Henthron of Choctaw and John Scripsick of Wayne joined others in a Veterans Day protest of the war at the state Capitol on Monday.

Scripsick’s 22-year-old son, Bryan Scripsick, was a Marine corporal who died in September while engaged in combat in Anbar Province in Iraq.

Henthorn’s son, 25-year-old Jeffrey Henthorn, was an Army specialist killed during his second tour of Iraq in 2005.

Scripsick and Henthron praised veterans for their service, but said the Iraq war should never have happened and it is time to bring troops home.

It is time to stop our participation in this Iraq war. Not real sure if there as been anything accomplished besides higher gas prices which I believe is Pres. Bushes main objective. If terror is what he is concerned about then all we have to do is protect our borders.

This war was never about oil or gas prices. This was about getting rid of a threat to us. Saddam posed a real threat. After 9\11 the rules on how we deal with threats had to change. We had been playing with Saddam for ten years trying to solve the problem of his W.M.D.s diplomaticly. It didnt work. After 9\11 we could no longer tolerate that threat. As far as what has been accomplished, we have had no other terrorist attacks, Iraq and Afganastan are no longer the threats they were, and Al-Qaida is in shambles. So yes we should be there, yes we are winning, and yes the world will be safer once we win this war on terrorism.

#2 the only interest in the mideast at the present is still oil and gas. Saddam was the man who kept Iraq under control. When he was in power, the US wasn't concerned about how he ruled. To this day the US wouldn't care, if it wasn't chicken little Bush crying the sky is falling - WMD's. The US wouldn't have thousands of soldiers dead, or missing body parts trying to put their lives back together. The issue of taking care of their medical care is something Bush doesn't want to address. The mideasterners, obviously were fed up with being taken advantage of their resources, hence 9/11. So don't fool yourself, the US has created a mess internationally.

Either you were'nt alive in the 90's or have forgotten. We went to Kuwait because of Saddam. We know he had WMD's because he used them agianst Iran in the war they had, and the Kurds after desert storm. Bill Clinton himself called Saddam a threat. The U.N. passed resolution after resolution to get him to show hie WMD's. After 9\11 we could no longer ignore threat that those were. Saddam had almost ten years to comply with the U.N. if he had we would'nt be there today. I want to say thank you to all of the solders who have and are fighting over ther and in Afganastan.

I can't believe the people who think we are there to steal the oil, and think Iraq has been wronged by the USA. Sure if all goes well and a better country emerges from it we will buy as much oil from them as we can at the going rate.Better them than Chavez. As for the people of Iraq hating America for giving them a chance for democrary or the government of their choice, I guess only time will tell but I was working in Detroit when the invasion began and the Iraq's who live in the city of Deerborn, Mi. were dancing in the streets and praising America for trying to give them a better country to return to. And last but not least the ones who say Iraq didn't have anything to do with 9/11 all I can say is Germany didn't have anything to do with Pearl Harbor either

John Scripsick and Warren Henthorn are courageous men who don't want the suffering their families have endured to be felt by others. Unless you have been to Iraq yourself or have a loved one facing the horrors of a needless war, you can't possibly know what these two brave fathers are going through everyday.
David, Broken Arrow (3 years ago)
No, I don't know what those fathers go through every day, or the millions of other fathers, mothers, sisters, and brothers that have lost families to war since America's birth.(By the way, America gained her independence as a result of war...and lots of blood shed and lots of family members left behind)

And let's not go into how the United Nations screwed up in getting Saddam to dismantle his WMDs. They screwed up to the point that Saddam could have walked all of those WMDs to Syria or Saudi Arabia, leaving us nothing to find of course.

If anyone hasn't noticed it yet the way we fight war now is different than it has ever been. Conventionally you'd fight someone who attacked you first. This day and age, though, with weapons so powerful that a single one can erase a city from the map in the mix you can't simply wait to be attacked. Waiting that long is too late. We are not in a world now where we can wait until we are attacked to take action on a threat. The cost would be much higher than this war has been thus far. So far it seems we haven't decided to just sit and wait and see which group of terrorists cares to turn one of our major cities into moonscape. I hope we don't wait and pay a horrible price before we see what stares us in the face.

I have to say is united we conquer, divided we fail. these young men are the heart and soul of our country. These brave young men had a mission for peace, with the sole purpose to DEFEND OUR FREEDOM. To them there is no politics, just compassion. For the parents of the fallen heros, I put you on a pedastal for raising such men with value's. My son is one of the elite that felt just as strong to defend this wonderful country. This country needs to support our boys who without regard to there own well being suport all of us! Allthough an IED changed my son's life, he would go back in a heartbeat..I am proud to be an American .....

the comments made by rob and brian show the high level of ignorance that right-wing proganda helps to foster in certain segments of American society. Very sad indeed

Note to #10, "udder" moron ? Indeed.
Jerry, Edmond (3 years ago)
My son served in Desert Storm. We watched as America pulled out rather than finish what needed to be done. I hope all the men and women who served and yes those who died in Iraq this time don't look back one day and say "Why didn't we finish?"
