Richard Roberts issues rebuttal to 35 allegations
Oral Roberts University is at 7777 S. Lewis Ave. TOM GILBERT / Tulsa World

Read the latest stories about the ORU lawsuit, examine the lawsuit and other documents and watch slide shows and video.
Oral Roberts University President Richard Roberts issued a point-by-point rebuttal Friday to 35 allegations contained in a lawsuit alleging a variety of wrongdoing.
Roberts and his attorney, Frank Hagedorn, released the document to the Tulsa World. It contains responses to allegations contained in two versions of a document allegedly prepared by Stephanie Cantees, the sister of Roberts' wife, Lindsay. The versions were attached to a lawsuit filed by three former professors against Roberts, ORU and other defendants.
Roberts told the World on Friday that he saw some of the Cantees memo about three years ago but other parts of it were not written by her. He said Cantees is a community liaison for the university and had collected rumors she heard concerning ORU or the Roberts family, regardless of whether they were true.
Roberts has been on a leave of absence as ORU president since Oct. 17 while the school's board and independent auditors investigate allegations made in a lawsuit that he and his family misused ORU and Oral Roberts Ministries money and resources.
Below are some of the allegations listed in the suit and Richard and Lindsay Roberts' response to them. Material in quotes is taken directly from Roberts' rebuttal document.
Allegation:
Lindsay Roberts sent text messages to underage males between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m.
Response:
"Richard and Lindsay get calls and texts at all hours due to a ministry they had for kids with drug and alcohol problems. . . . The time of text messaging and calls could easily occur between 1-3 a.m., as they are overseas on a regular basis." The Roberts' daughters also occasionally use their parents' phone and bills are paid personally.
Allegation:
Richard Roberts claimed: "I have the deck stacked. I am elected to 3 year terms and if a regent appears to give me trouble I remove him."
Response:
The Regents Nominating Committee submits nominations and the board votes on board members. All board members serve three-year terms and Richard Roberts does not have authority to name or fire board members.
Allegation:
Richard Roberts has total control of a university-owned airplane and often brings friends of his daughters, who take precedence over university employees. The plane was used to take Roberts' daughter and her friends on a senior trip.
Response:
ORU does not own an airplane. The ministry leases a plane with eight seats plus one jump seat. "The plane is used for trips to churches, recruiting events, telethons, conferences, seminars etc.
"The Roberts' daughter Olivia and many other students have joined Richard Roberts on trips as part of the ministry. . . . Personal expenses were charged to the Roberts."
Allegation:
All housing costs, including furnishings and a $15,000 stove, are paid.
Response:
"The home is owned by ORU. The Roberts family pays rent at fair market value." The family has one wide-screen television and a commercial stove "similar to many homes that frequently entertain large groups of guests."
Allegation:
The home has been remodeled 11 times in 14 years and has a 2,000-square-foot closet.
Response:
The home was built in 1986 and has required several repairs due to mold and mildew issues. "These have not been remodeling projects."
"There is no 2000-square-foot office or closet in the Roberts' house. There is one 540-square-foot closet."
Allegation:
"Mrs. Roberts wardrobe paid for by television production. . . . Current bills for clothing charged as wardrobe by Mrs. Roberts in excess of $51,205."
Response:
"This is absolutely false. . . . Mrs. Roberts is required to document any TV wardrobe through Audit and Compliance Committee. Undocumented charges are charged to the Roberts family."
Allegation:
ORU employees are called to the home to do the Roberts daughters' homework.
Response:
The family has paid for tutors for one daughter, who is dyslexic. Assistance was also given to the daughter when she was ill to help her catch up on school work.
Allegation:
Thirteen ORU scholarships were given by Lindsay Roberts to friends of her children and two of the students had 12s on the ACT.
Response:
No students with a 12 on the ACT have ever been accepted at ORU. "The Roberts have submitted recommendations for scholarship applicants and will continue to do so. However the ultimate choice is left to the scholarship committee."
Lindsay Roberts also has a ministry-sponsored scholarship program and recipients are chosen by a committee.
Allegation:
Tapes exist of one Roberts daughter vandalizing the athletic department. Richard Roberts refused to take action.
Response:
"This is a distortion of the truth. A nationally touring band played at ORU and wanted ORU T-shirts to wear on tour. The Roberts gave them T-shirts as they thought it was good PR for the school."
Allegation:
The Roberts children damaged ORU-owned golf carts.
Response:
An incident occurred when children who were visiting the Roberts home were chasing each other in golf carts. The Roberts children were not in the cart and no one was injured.

after reading this, i thought for sure heavens were going to open and the archangel would say something like. "this is my son in whom i am well pleased!"...YEAH RIGHT!....this is a bunch of hog wash.....he is a smooth talker and a really good liar......of course he is....he's been doing it for years!!!!
.
this makes me wanna puke! why he makes it sound as if his family is a bunch of heavenly angels and it is everyone else that are the liars.....typical behavior of a great manipulator and controller!
.
RR until you face the truth head on and repent, your life is only going to get worse.....grow up....if you really love the students, faculty, staff, and ORU - you would do the right thing! But obviously you don't give a rat's A__ about anybody except yourself!

If these were answers to interrogatories submitted to a court, the Roberts would be probably be ordered to more fully answer the questions. Very self-serving and incomplete. I don't think they help themselves with this response.

Some of these allegations are mostly true...I do know that I personally saw one Roberts daughter FLY past me in a golf cart, only to be hotly pursued by one Ms. L. Roberts and a security officer/bodyguard? The daughter must've been going too fast, because as she breezed past, L. Roberts called behind her, "Sorry!!!!" It was on the lawn between Gabrielle Christian Salem Hall and Howard Auditorium. I was walking up the hill to the parking lot--other alumni will know exactly what I'm talking about.

come on guys lets just turn the cheek and move on. if there were any truth to this it might come out but there was devine intervention. the one guy gave 78 million dollars to get ORU back on its feet. no one on earth would do that unless it was called by GOD to do so. in all i think it was over 80 million given to the college. so who are we to fight against GOD? now i am going to start tithing again and though this may have been a lesson it was a strong wake up call and richard and lindsay will do just fine. td

I guess Richard's final answer is "I quit"... for now. Watch, out, I'll bet he'll be (trying to get) back, asking for his job back (and dynasty/empire), even with many tears. Really, the "soap opera" is just beginning... with a new cast of characters coming on stage (including Pat Robertson).

It will never get back on track until true reform is made (keeping the Roberts away, and cleaning the Board of Regents out... Benny Hinn, Kenneth Copeland, and John Hagee have to go... along with any other well-known financial abusers).

Greetinsg and oh my is right! My heartfelt grief on this is .....the word of God says we(christians) are to eb a light unto the world. I will agree there is some questionable things here however we must remember that first and above all else, the world will not judge or criticize rightly, meaning they are judging with spiritual blinders on. THEY do not understand the wasy of the Lord! Now saying that it is alos important for the minstry of ORU to stay on the up and up at all times. all times. i will be honest with you....the ministries who have handed over their recorcds.....God Bless you. In that getsure alone you are shoiwng you have nothing to hide. Key question: how does a ministry stay out of trouble? by keeping their focus on God and His will and His purpose. ORU was built according to the FULL gospel, and no one should try to change that. yes are to obey the laws of the land however when thopse laws violate Gods.....guess what? we then have aright to say NO! That is what we must stand on! Gods ways only! sorry folks there is no other, no matter what anyone says! shalom and God Bless.

Why doesn't everyone pray about this. Don't be so judgemental. How immature to believe what the media is saying. Wait and see if the media is right. Most of the time what they say is false.
Richard and Lindsey have put their lives in this ORU. Oral Roberts faced much persecution, and continued. Self inflicted, I don't know, but we need to pray for these people What if they are innocent? They are supposed to be until proven guilty. Christians are notorious for getting mad at Pastors and telling lies on them. Every pastor has had this happen numerous times. Even with a business and employees if you ever say no to them, they get mad and tell lies on you. Let's just wait it out, and reguardless, it is none of our business. I am going to believe the best of Lindsey and Richard. If they are lieing it will come out in the open. I don't think they are so stupid as to use all of these funds and think the board will not find out. They are not illiterate people. It takes alot of clothes for tv programs, and so what if God has blessed them. Do presidents of multi million corporations who are not christians get criticised for having huge homes, etc. and salaries? Stop picking on the christians for this. Maybe they stopped the jet off to fuel up and let the girls spend a day or two on a Sr. trip? All jets have to refuel and they all let the pilots lay over. Sounds like someone wants to take over and rule the university their way. If they are in debt, I don't think all the blame can be put on the Roberts. If wrong was done, why did board members not know what was going on. Something sounds funny. How would you not know a billion dollars was missing? The board gets financial reports monthly in their board meetings. If Richard and Lindsey was doing wrong things, why did the board members let it go on so long? Someone would have come out with it sooner. Strange! Her sister is not a decent sister, she could have personally talked this over with them. However if wrong is done, it will come out in the open. Until then just remain silent.

I liked what ORU stood for and I really appreciated OR himself. I believe that he was a true man of God. I don;t know RR as well but assumed he was a chip off the old block. Possibly I was wrong! GLAD TO HEAR THAT RR HAS RESIGNED. It was long long overdue! The spending was rediculous started presumably by LR who apparently believed she was worth maybe million$. Maybe, like Adam, RR's woman. LR, tempted him and he did eat (high on the hog). We definitely know $he was the big $pender! But RR's big spending intensified as he became more inclined to like "the good life" which was not so good. The good life turned into "arrogance" and as someone has previously said "God uses good men" ...and... "Bad men use God." The misrepresentations that both RR & LR have made to alumni, churches, and listeners is beyond comprehension. Pls pray for Oral as I am sure he is beginning now to see the error of his favorite son's ways and has to be broken hearted. Pray for him and for ORU itself. If it is God's institution...it can be led by someone who God will choose if the BOR will allow themselves to be led by the Lord God Himself.
I honestly think that both RR & LR will have to be brought down more before they can see the error of their selfish & arrogant ways. In the meantime ORU must go on with wisdon from the Lord.

The Word?
, Tulsa (11/25/2007 8:26:02 AM)
Does anybody here read the Bible? If this is the mentality of our society today, no wonder it is going to hell. I have not read but maybe a couple of posts that do what the Bible says to do. I feel sorry for all you self righteous people. And I pray for you all and Bless you. Why does nobody look at how the prof. tries and tries to get rich by suing people?? Or how many mission trips the students have taken to help people? How many healings have come out their ministry, I wish that everytime you made a mistake all the world knew and could judge you. So what, money went to their heads, how many of you people feel like you are better than your neighbor all smug and thinking your poo don't stink, probably all of you. At least God forgives and he can't stand a gossip, I believe he tells us to help the sinner, not hang them?? I do need to say this though, if they want God to forgive them like the Bible says then they need to confess and repent, and they seem to be in denial, so we need to pray for them all the more, like the Word tells us to do, not attack them. I bless you all, and I hope you all do not judge all Christians like you seem to be doing, J. D. said the worst people to represent Christianity are Christians themselves, this is why. But I saw on the news the other night of this guy that feeds the homeless people downtown every Friday night, I was talking to someone that knows him, and except for the Thanksgiving dinner he pays for the food out of his own pocket each week, and it takes most of his paycheck to do it with, this is the kind of Christian we should be supporting, one that gives all he has to help his fellow man, plus he gives them blankets and clothes to stay warm. You don't see him on TV begging for money, but because of the attitude everyone has with the Roberts, people like him don't get any help. And there are a lot of small ministries out there that actually help the people of our own city, do you? All of our shelters can use help with donations. So please don't think all Christians make mistakes like the Roberts did, and please do what God says and forgive, so he can forgive you of your mistakes. Bless you all.

DO YOU NEED TO PAY ANY CHRISTIAN LEADER FOR THE FREE GIFT OF GOD IF WE READ THE BIBLE?
“You Received Free, Give Free”
“YOU received free, give free.” (Matthew 10:8) Jesus issued that instruction to his apostles when he sent them forth to preach the good news. Did the apostles obey this directive? Yes, and they continued to do so even after Jesus departed from the earth.
For instance, when the former sorcerer Simon saw the miraculous powers possessed by the apostles Peter and John, he offered to pay them to impart that power to him. But Peter rebuked Simon, saying: “May your silver perish with you, because you thought through money to get possession of the free gift of God.”—Acts 8:18-20.
The apostle Paul displayed a spirit similar to Peter’s. Paul could have allowed himself to be a financial burden to his Christian brothers in Corinth. However, he worked with his own hands to support himself. (Acts 18:1-3) Thus, he could say with confidence that he had preached the good news to the Corinthians “without cost.”—1 Corinthians 4:12; 9:18.
Sad to say, many who claim to be followers of Christ have not shown the same willingness to “give free.” Indeed, many of the religious leaders in Christendom will “instruct just for a price.” (Micah 3:11) Some religious leaders have even become wealthy from money collected from their flocks. In 1989, one U.S. evangelist was sentenced to a jail term of 45 years. The reason? He had been “defrauding supporters of millions of dollars and using some of the money to buy homes, cars, holidays and even an air-conditioned dog kennel.”—People’s Daily Graphic, October 7, 1989.
"And the spirit and the bride keep on saying: “Come!” And let anyone hearing say: “Come!” And let anyone thirsting come; let anyone that wishes take life’s water free." (Rev. 22:17) And what to about religion that does not give life waters free is at Revelation 18:4. After that find the religion that gives it free!

#308. Joe-Allen. "I see where you are coming from" is an expression that I used to mean "I understand what you are saying." I'm pretty sure that's an acceptable usage of the phrase. I did not mean literally that "where you came from," as in your parental or grandparental influence, is what formed your opinion,
In particular, here is what I understood, I may be wrong again, but at least I will be specific, I didn't want to be specific because I didn't want to get into politics.
The main reason you gave for disliking John Ashcroft is that he is an author/enabler/whatever is the correct term for The Patriot Act whereby there can be searches without traditional search warrants and wiretapping without traditional warrants etc., all in the name of fighting terrorism. I also don't like that law and I'm not crazy about Pres. Bush although I do live in Texas and thought he was pretty good as Governor. He was a better Governor of Texas than he is President of the US, probably because he identifies better with the interests of Texas industry, etc., rather than with all the USA and even the greater world.
Now, I'm not exactly sure if being part of the Patriot Act disqualifies a person as a Christian, but I do agree that one's father's sanctification doesn't say anything one way or the other about the son.
So if that's your opinion, I "get where your coming from," which means "I understand your position," which now it's up to you to tell me if I got it right or not. If not, we can keep trying.

I want to see the beautiful Lindsay Roberts who arrived in the mid 80s with a calling to meet Richard Roberts. I have feared that Lindsay might have been overtaxed or overtired for several years now but when she opens her mouth the Word of God flows out, astoundingly. God bless Lindsay and help her through this time of a lynch mob attitude. Lindsay is a product of an environment that hid her light under a bushel. She is beautiful and brilliant, and not being able to minister as fully as she should have been is the only crime I see here. I love you Lindsay. God light your path and deliver you from this evil.

Dearest Richard and Lindsey...
If you, or any of your relatives, or friends, are reading this, I just want to say that there are many of us out here who love and respect you both and also Dad, Oral. The Lord has never forsaken those who trust in Him. He has said that He will never leave, nor forsaken you. Even in this darkest hour, He is near you. Your hearts have been broken, but Jesus is the Restorer of the Breach. Be encouraged, thousands of us are praying and holding you up before the Lord.. and no weapon forged against you shall prosper. You both are doing what is right before God, our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, by praying for and blessing those who are persecuting you.
Luv and hugs, Mom

Psalm 46:
1God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
2Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;
3Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah.
4There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High.
5God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early.
6The heathen raged, the kingdoms were moved: he uttered his voice, the earth melted.
7The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.
8Come, behold the works of the LORD, what desolations he hath made in the earth.
9He maketh wars to cease unto the end of the earth; he breaketh the bow, and cutteth the spear in sunder; he burneth the chariot in the fire.
10Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.
11The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.

The truth: in chapel when Lindsey layed her shaking hand on the students foreheads, she herself shook the hand touching them, but no power from God benefited the student for which she prayed.
Her touch rather felt no differant than the hand of a supposedly non-anointed person's would feel when touching another.
Could it be that is why she got so over worked and run down? Meaning; wouldn't anybody get that way, trying to do all her position required, if they as she mostly did; working out of her own limited strength, and not spending enough personally spiritual time together with God's spiritual presence.
Isn't that why she was in a state where her emotions of fear took over to such an extent that on one of her rampages she blew up at one time a few years ago, and fired every one who worked closely with her. Wasn't it out of her fear in insecurity that she might otherwise be found to be a fake that she forced Richard to approve building her an office costing around $80,000 or more, at the Mabee Center' only in a year's span or therein was she compelled to again throw another tantrum and demand that Richard authorize for her office to be moved to the City of Faith, where that office cost a full $80,000?
How in the world could excessive spending like that be justified, when the university, was carrying the burdon millions of dollars of debt?
As people have said, God may love L, R, & O; yet for them just like for all of us the day of reckoning does still come. It comes ever so worse depending on how many other's, whom God loves, that the one sitting in the judgment seat has tread upon during the path overwhich the he/she traveled before arriving to such a plight.

Yet another past employee, it is funny that all the past employees, come out of the wood work now, all of the former graduates come out of the wood work now, yet they knew all this bad stuff going on, and still stayed or did nothing about. But now they come out being so rightous, the way I see it is you are as much to blame, you still stayed there, so it must have not been too bad, I would have left or spoke up then. But what fun would that have been, why not wait to kick them while they are down and make your selves feel so superior? People like you make me have to pray all the harder. And lets hope God will forgive you after he forgives them. I will pray for you as I do them because that is what my God tells me to do, pray for them and love them all the more, have them to dinner, give to them, help them. Just what the word says, God also says not to gossip about them, because then you are worse than them.

My spirit has been vexed by the lavish living of the TV ministers and their false message of the word of prosperity. Senator Grassley a born again Baptist Christain and the oversight folks will hold them accountible.
I believe Richard Roberts is now being rightly being taken through the fire for the wrong reasons. I believe a Roberts needs to continue to be a part of thet great school and in a leadershiop role. That can only happen with a vow of poverty and humility coming from the Roberts. A life style change of the Roberts and a new Board of Reagents that has a cross mixture of cultural and spiritual backgrounds that is not loaded with Word of Faith ministers. Richard Roberts can change if he so desires in his spirit. My life has been of God, politics and I have made my share of mistakes but I have learned in the process. Can they?
