Richard Roberts: He’s taken a leave of absence as the university’s president following allegations in a lawsuit.

Read the latest stories about the ORU lawsuit, examine the lawsuit and other documents and watch slide shows and video.

He endorses "complete financial transparency."

Oral Roberts University President Richard Roberts said he wants "complete financial transparency" at the university if he is allowed to return to his position.

In an interview with the Tulsa World on Friday, Roberts answered criticism by tenured faculty members and others that ORU withheld information about its finances. He also discussed his practice of reimbursing the ministry for personal expenses, a student center that was never built and the possible sale of the university's television station.

Roberts said in news articles in 1997 and 2001 that ORU's debt had been cut in half when in fact debt had increased during those years.

He said Friday: "In the early years of being president I think I got some funny information. We had to make some changes in personnel in those years."

Roberts has been on a leave of absence from the university since Oct. 17 while ORU's board and independent auditors investigate allegations in a lawsuit that he and his family misused ORU and Oral Roberts Ministries money and resources.

A World investigation showed that ORU spent $73 million more than it brought in between 1993 and 2006. The university recorded only two years with a positive

operational balance: 1993 and 1995.

Tenured faculty members who met last week voted no confidence in Roberts as the president and CEO and voted for "greater faculty governance and transparency of university finances."

Roberts said that if he returns as president, he plans to meet with tenured faculty members every two weeks.

"The faculty, for whatever reason, have felt like they have not had a voice, and that's wrong, and I take responsibility for that," he said.

Roberts said ORU needs a "culture change," adding, "I would like to have complete financial transparency."

Roberts said he discussed the issue recently with faculty members and told them they might be "scared spitless" at times to see the university's books.

"I laughed and said, 'Can you stand it?' I said back in those early years when I was president and we didn't know if we were going to make payroll, how would you have felt back in those years if I had called you together for prayer and said, 'I'm $200,000 short for payroll on Friday?' "

He said the faculty "came to ORU to teach. You didn't come to worry about payroll."

Roberts said that although faculty members deserve to have more financial information, it is "a good question" as to whether all financial records should be shared with the public.

"You don't know what the media is going to do with that," he said.

ORU is a private university and not subject to the Oklahoma Open Records Act, as public universities are. The annual financial forms ORU files with the U.S. government, called 990 forms, are open under federal law.

The lawsuit filed by three former ORU professors alleges that Roberts and his family used university resources for personal use, including trips, clothing and other expenses. Roberts said the ministry -- Oral Roberts Evangelistic Association -- had paid for his family's personal expenses at times but he later reimbursed OREA.

"I didn't have a good system of paying for it in front. I paid for it after it was over, and that is a mistake, but all of it was reimbursed," he said.

"The charge was it was paid for out of the university, and that's not true. It came from the OREA."

Questions have also been raised about ORU's handling of $8.8 million in donations for a student center that was never built. The funds included $5 million from a donor who asked to remain anonymous.

The funds were raised in 2001 for the building, which was estimated to cost between $17 million and $25 million. After the World requested information about the project, an ORU spokesman said the university spent $3.6 million on demolition of a building and other preparation work before the project was put on hold.

With the donor's permission, other funds were spent on scholarships and operations, the university said.

But at least one donor who spoke to the Tulsa World said he did not give permission and was not asked whether his donation could be used for other purposes. ORU has refused to answer additional questions about the project.

Roberts said the student center was put on hold after Sept. 11, 2001, because donations slowed. Regarding ORU's account of the funds raised, he said: "I don't think the numbers are correct. I'm not in a position right now to correct them for you."

Roberts said he hopes the university can sell its TV station, KGEB, channel 53, to help pay down a $52 million debt. KGEB broadcasts shows such as "The Hour of Healing" featuring Roberts and "Make Your Day Count," whose host is his wife, Lindsay Roberts.

Roberts said: "My understanding is the current appraisal is $14 million for the TV station. . . . I heard this week there are currently 16 groups that have an interest in buying it."

Roberts said any sale would not affect his TV shows. He said he could buy time on the station or other stations:

"I'm not going off television, never. That's my calling."

You said you were joking about your offer. Notice how many gullible anti-Rs wanted to take you up on it? The mob mentality.

You often refer to Billy Graham. Billy NEVER endorses slandering people no matter what is going on. He does not believe in the kind of hate that is expressed regarding OR or anybody for that matter. He says his job is to LOVE others, period! People around here should try that route.

He is a weasel. At this point, RR will say and promise ANYTHING to be let back in. Plus, the BOR is likely scared to death of what RR could reveal if they don't vote him in.

Didn't you say your relative that works there is something like a "clerk"? You're not very personally involved, & your relative is on the payroll. I hope you're telling the truth that your "relative" is going to quit their job. Could save ORU some $ by getting rid of people that are only takers & not supporters of the ministry of ORU.

If you want to look at some great pentecostals that are so repsepcted, look at Jack Hayford, Bishop Charles Blake [who was a regent at one time] of the Church of God in Christ. to name a few. And by the way, I remember when David Boren spoke in chapel when I was there 88-92. Those were the days. Not to mention my close association with some of the Board Of Regent during that time, and no none of them who were WOF evangelist or preachers.

The days are coming to a close for the WOF gimme crowd, because too many people are living in a America with $3.00 a gallon gas, their insurance has gone up 3 times their what they could afford.

So what now, is it because they did not have enough faith Kenneth Copeland with your 18,000 sq ft house or did they not just believe in themselves enough right Paula or Joyce?, or I guess they just are not blessed because they are infidels, right John Hagee, Richard?, who do not even mention their children from their previous marriage, but parade their children around from their present marriage all over their TV programs.

We better wake up, I believe in the God of a second chance and the God of Israel that Hagee preaches about. I do question his recent comments said on TV from Thomas Road Baptist Church recently that we should bomb Iran for their Nuclear ambitions.

This is the crowd that preaches and prospers from the Word Of Faith, yet their taxes were cut, while their Kids were not sent to fight the "War on Terror".

Please tell me what I am missing here, the Word Of Faith works for the people preaching it and the rest of the people are holding the bag to pay the bills.

The Gospel is Good News, it should not just be for the people who twist the Gospel for a GIMMME GIMME crowd who thinks it is their Divine Right to get wealthy however the Republican Party says they can and the amount of politicking and public endorcements by this crown for the Republican Party is astounding.. Because to hear some of them tell it, the Senate has no right to investigate and they are being persecuted. The fact is if this was a Democrat leading this, the howls from the Republican WOF crowd would be deafning. Well at least one of their

own[and previously mine as well] is trying to fix that.!!!

ORU IS WORTH SAVING!!!

RR is setting the record strait now, he has been thrown under the bus, lied about, spat apon but the gloves are off now. Many were critical of the TWorld for not doing a better job of covering things, They are doing a super job of letting RR set the record strait,,,,must run, George of the Jungle is on TV soon.Hope he watches out for that Tree.

These articles planted by RR make me laugh. RR has thrown so many people under the bus over the years now I guess its Dave Ellsworth's time. Its one thing to say you got bad information if the difference in debt was say $11mil vs $10 mil but not $20 mil plus difference in the reported numbers. Trust me RR knew all the numbers. Any fabrication of the amounts occurred at his level not his subordinates. I realize people need jobs but why would these people stay and work under a guy (family) that blames everything on his subordinates and takes no responsibility for his own actions nevermind the organization's. As for the comment about personal expenses it is laughable. Her is a guy who is taking out $700,000 plus in cash from the organization per year and he doesn't have a good way to pay for his pers expenses? Maybe RR should have a little transparancy in his own financial situation. People don't let RR throw the messengers (CFO's or accounting personnell) under the bus. Understand that CFO's and accounting personell do not spend the money they just account for it.

What exactly are the qualifications of the current management team?

.

You want financial scandal. We got 'em. You want sexual scandal? We got 'em. You want low salaries and bad maintenance? Natch. You want accreditation heading downhill, possibly to a really bad end? Check. But they have the ONLY important qualification---the right last name.

Please clarify what you meant by sexual scandel...

In Wash DC we call this "puttin' the spin on things" which makes RR "the spinmeister!"

.

There sure has been a lot of talking to the Press for someone on a leave of absence AND someone who requested a gag order - which is it? Gag order of spinspinspin 24/7? Choose one or the other. Put up or shut up.

Under the bus is such a popular phrase on these boards. Sounds like the same poster. Certain posters have their pet phrases, "Titanic", etc.

.................................

Remarks about personal expense reimbursement........Most who post on that obviously have never held positions high enough to have to deal with that type of thing because they don't know what they're talking about when they make their accusations.

I watched Orals' speech this week on the 'The Hour of healing.' He read bits from the book of Acts and attempted to use these excerpted and out-of-context fragments of scripture to explain to us how Pauls' adventures on his journey to Rome are analagous to the toils and trials ORU is presently going through.

.

My first conclusion is that there is absolutely NO limit to the egos possessed by these people. Memo to Oral: You sir, are no Paul, and Richard is definitely no Luke. You two need desperately to get over yourselves. You clearly believe this university is all about you. And it isn't. Secondly, this personal fiefdom you call a university bears NO resemblance to the mission and calling that Paul received from God.

.

The faculty is sick of the the Robertses. Students are nervous and wonder what their degrees will be worth. Meanwhile, Richard continues to fiddle while Rome burns...spinning yarns about "funny info" and how there was no real way for him to pay his expenses up front.

.

It is past time for the Robertses to leave. And get that smell out of there too.

.

Reggie Walker believes that everyone who has ever taught at ORU is a false prophet.

. . . When I went to ORU, "False Theology" was NOT taught at Oral Roberts University. None of my theology/Bible professors with doctorate degrees and none of my theology/Bible professors with Masters degrees were expounders of the Word of Faith Doctrine. Not a one of them taught Oral Roberts' Seed Faith doctrine in the classroom either.

. . . None of my professors at Oral Roberts University even claimed to be prophets.
