ORU weekly e-mails checked
By ZIVA BRANSTETTER World Projects Editor

For more:
Read the latest ORU stories, view the lawsuit and other documents and watch slide shows and video.
The 2004-06 postings are purportedly to Richard Roberts from his political adviser and sister-in-law.
ORU President Richard Roberts is urged to use the ''voters and influence'' he controls to reap favors for Oral Roberts University in two years of weekly e-mails purportedly sent to him by his political adviser and sister-in-law, Stephanie Cantees.
''You intend to make ORU a political powerhouse where candidates will recognize that they will be expected to be asked questions and if elected when they come back for re-election they had better have some thing to show for the votes the students gave them,'' states one e-mail from ''Stef'' to Roberts' ORU e-mail address on Dec. 1, 2006.
''Thanks for the update and the suggestions. Keep them coming every week,'' was the response three days later, signed RR, from Richard Roberts' e-mail account.
That response and a similar one were the only e-mails from Roberts to ''Stef.''
''I remember a lot of these suggestions she made to me over the years but that does not mean in any way shape or form that I agreed with them believed in them or did them,'' Roberts said Tuesday when contacted by
the Tulsa World.
The e-mails span a period from August 2004 through December 2006, and in them, ''Stef'' advises Roberts how to curry political favor with a variety of elected officials.
''You have what they want -- VOTERS AND INFLUENCE. Not one big donor in this state has what you have, yearly new crop of ready made voters (18 years old out of state) doesn't get any better,'' states an e-mail to Roberts from ''Stef,'' on Aug. 19, 2004.
The e-mail, under the heading ''how to get your fair share,'' then urges Roberts to ''invite every elected official out to the campus for a personal visit, lunch and tour.''
The e-mails, which appear to be sent to Roberts' ORU e-mail address from Cantees through ORU's Internet server, were delivered to the Tulsa World on Tuesday by an anonymous source. The e-mails are quoted here as they were delivered to the Tulsa World, complete with misspelling, grammatical errors and abbreviations.
In a statement to the World, her attorney, Gerald Hilsher, said: ''It appears that Ms. Cantees is not the only one who has been the victim of a computer hacker. Even ORU appears vulnerable to the theft of computer data and the possible alteration of communications and the misidentification of participants.
''On Ms. Cantees' behalf, I have requested the return of her stolen computer data that is in the hands of the parties to the recent litigation, and I would remind everyone with a hand on stolen computer data that there is a state criminal statute against the possession, use, and disclosure of stolen computer information.''
Cantees was paid by Oral Roberts Evangelistic Association as a community and government liaison. Roberts said her job was to keep him informed of events and rumors in the community that may affect ORU.
Roberts has been on a leave of absence as ORU president since Oct. 17 while the school's board and independent auditors investigate allegations made in a lawsuit that he and his family misused ORU and Oral Roberts Ministries money and resources.
In the suit, former professor Tim Brooker claims Roberts improperly ordered him to use ORU students in Randi Miller's failed campaign for mayor. Miller was later elected to the Tulsa County Commission.
In one e-mail dated Jan. 10, 2006, ''Stef'' writes: ''Tim will have a minimum of 100 students to surround Randi when she files at 1:00 pm Wednesday.''
The e-mail continues, stating: ''Tim is locating 2 students to assist and if she chooses run her campaign. . . . I don't want my name on financial/ethics documents -- red flag for me to be signing as a family member of ORU.''
The e-mail later states: ''Tim and I are organizing a meeting with all to determine what students can do in the races for approved candidates. He and I are aggressively coming up with the dates and topic for me to 'talk' with students about their president and his behind the scenes efforts in recapturing the moral integrity in politicians.''
Roberts said he did not order Brooker to have his students campaign for Miller. IRS regulations prohibit nonprofit organizations, such as ORU, from lobbying and working directly for candidates.
''She was eyes and ears and she presented all kinds of ideas and concepts, some of which were good,'' Roberts said. ''She had all kinds of suggestions, a lot of which I threw out of the window.''
In an e-mail dated Oct. 25, 2004, just before a statewide general election, ''Stef'' suggests that Roberts remind students to vote.
If necessary, ''Stef'' advises Roberts to tell students during Chapel service ''you intend to obtain copies of every voting record name by name you will find out just who is participating in their Christian duty of being salt of the earth.''
In an e-mail dated Dec. 5, 2005, ''Stef'' advises Roberts to build connections with future Tulsa Mayor Kathy Taylor, then secretary of commerce.
''I suggest you mention Kathy, you know there are a lot of my staff being asked and accepting appointments to very important boards. I am hopefully the governor would include oru in those same areas at a state level.''
The e-mail also notes ''we have 42 oru grads on the hill in a variety of positions.''
It later states: ''Could you clear way for me to call Tim brooker to meet with him.''
Many e-mails refer to ORU's need for a tenant in the City of Faith buildings. In December, 2006, ''Stef'' reminds Roberts that city and county officials may want his endorsement on an upcoming tax for river development.
''To do that, what's in it for you. Can you spell either student center (log rolling or pork barrel call it what you want . . . or Citi-Plex center (I have a proposal for that when they come to you and they will).''
In one section of an e-mail, titled ''what can a commissioner do for the university,'' ''Stef'' lists ''industrial revenue bonds, student center, renovations, retrofitting, CitiPlex'' and other items.
Several e-mails refer to an organized effort to get students registered to vote, including passing out registration cards during ORU chapel services.
In an e-mail dated Nov. 2, 2006, days before a statewide general election, ''Stef'' discusses a goal to register 80 percent of ORU students as voters.
''Finally we have a way to show and harness your influence and power,'' the e-mail states. ''With this effort you would have the ammunition at all levels, local, state and federal to bring forth documentation to show you have such influence that 80 percent of your student body are registered voters.''
She notes that ''you get the power to obtain the much deserved funds resources that ORU has been overlooked in their dissemination by elected officials at all levels.''
She also refers to one candidate for state legislature who won after ORU students campaigned for him.
''We have talked and he recognized the impact your help made on him winning,'' the e-mail states.

I''m not an RR fan, but nothing earth-shattering with this. Was there supposed to be something in this that was wrong. Looks like all it shows is how politically motivated SC was/is.

The story about ORU being 50 million in debt makes me much happier. What a charade that place is.

Keep in mind that the board of regents are
"going through the motions" and they will never, never, never ask richard to resign or let him go.
That would be like cutting off their own right hand.

I wonder who Richard relies on now for advise. It seems he could certainly use some from someone with a healthy amount of wisdom.

This is not a smoking gun, but it definitely ties RR much closer to Tim Brooker's story of the Randi Miller campaign. Clearly RR was involved and aware of everything Brooker was doing. SC was certainly pushing RR and ORU in the direction of more involvement in local politics and things that would certainly endanger tax-exempt status for ORU.

Anyone who is unsure about Richard being passionate about politics should have been in chapel when he asked everyone to stand. Then he instructed those who were registered to vote to sit down. The unregistered voters were left standing. He made his point. Could this be part of the "culture of fear?" It is very sad that some of the people in the room could not vote because of their international status.
This happened in the fall semester of 2004.
Also, RR has peple sign voter registration cards in chapel every fall.

Religious goups should stay out of politics or be taxed!!!!! I wish I could us my tax money to support who I would like to have in office. It would not be for any of the Collection Plate Politician Republicans around here. This is disgusting!!!!!This so called Christan President should also be put on trial for TREASON now! Leaking a CIA agent's name is a crime and he should be punished. I wonder how much RR sent to Bush?

This is so not right!!!! These are impressionable young kids, and Roberts is taking advantage of his position to influence what should be their private, precious voting rights. It's no one's business how or if or for whom anyone else votes! He didn't do this in the best interest of his students, he did it to promote himself and his "business." Parents should be outraged!

I don't believe there's any evidence that RR told students who to vote for..I'm not an RR suporter, but I DO applaud his efforts to encourage them to vote-whoever they chose to vote for.!!

#12: Get your head out of the sand. RR wanted those students to support the candidate who would do the most for him/ORU. Go back and read the emails. He didn't care if those students voted or worked for the candidate of their choice, he wanted them to support HIS choice. It's none of his business whether they voted or not--that's a private issue. He never should have embarrassed any student by making them stand up alone in a crowd just because they hadn't voted (see #8). Sounds like you were brainwashed by the Roberts machine while you were there, too.

Good story TW.
Just more evidence of manpulation of students, the climate of fear and playing very loose with IRS reg
This is part of the reason the legal case will not be settled for dollars.
Those who filed it did so for reasons of principles, not gain.
They know a ot more than they have revealed.
It will come out in due course.

Nope, NOT BRAINWASHED. As a private citizen, RR can support whoever he chooses...just can't tell others who to vote for. As I understand it, he encouraged them to get involved with candidates as the students saw fit as well as for their government class.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with getting students to register to vote. Quite the contrary. Likewise, there is nothing wrong with seeking help from elected officials. ORU and RR are, unfortunately, an important and interesting story but the media should stick to reporting the SIGNIFICANT news about it, not the irrelevance.

I really dont see much in this either except it does show that RR was involved in the campaign as alleged AND it serves the Roberts Weekend campaign of denial and misdirection. I predict we will see similar stuff all weekend from the RR political machine. This one defers stuff to SC, the meeting deferred stuff to Lew. Everybody but RR. The LR story is funny, meaningless until Richardson gets to depose people, then the "rest of the Story" will come out.

I loved my time at ORU. When it was announced Richard would be taking over as president rather than Roberta, I was part of the group of students who wanted Roberta in and Richard out. Roberta had a real degree and a real job. All I remember is Richard had wanted to be a lounge singer and professional golfer and had run off to Kansas University before being pulled back to Tulsa to be groomed to take over.
As a student I was registered to vote in my hometown and voted by absentee ballot in the state I was born and raised in. If we were encouraged to register to vote locally, I did not. I remember once that our RA told us about an upcoming protest at an abortion clinic that some community group or church was planning. We each had the individual ability to say no and not participate.
After seeing the emails mentioned in this TW piece, all the more reason to get all of Linday's relatives away from ORU. There should be one house for the President and his family to live in. Not a compound for relatives.
I am glad to hear that Lindsay's brother and SIL have moved on.
As a student I enjoyed the variety of speakers in chapel. But as my time there progressed, the speakers were more from the Roberts clan than outside speakers. I would have loved to have had the professors/teachers/staff be chapel speakers.
I specifically remember one chapel service where Cheryl Prewitt Salem was the speaker. During the first part of the chapel service she and Lindsay sat together in the chairs on stage where the Roberts family sat. They looked bored to death of being there. When it was time for Cheryl to speak, she put on her pagent face, perked up, pranced to the podium and went on and on.
I don't have any first-hand knowledge of LR and the culture of fear. The thing I remember about Lindsay and being shocked by was that my former roomate who became pregnant while dating an ORU baseball player was not sent home to have her baby, but rather given a job in Lindsay's office.
It is time for fresh leadership at my alma mater.

Give me a break. All this proves is computer hacking by the Brooker assoc.
Been on an American campus lately? They all try to get kids to vote. I know about him saying students need to vote. It's called civic duty. Never was told who to vote for, & neither was anybody else. Students also worked for different campaigns, their choice.

# 17 and 22: It's not even simply a matter of private citizen vs university president. He's illegally using his platform as leader of a tax exempt entiry to strong-arm and influence his subordinates into furthering his politcal agenda. That is, quite literlly, a federal crime.
