Robertses face more lawsuits

A former ORU accountant and two students have filed suits.

A former Oral Roberts University senior accountant filed a lawsuit Wednesday claiming he was forced to quit because he refused to stay silent about ORU and others allegedly requiring him to falsely list assets as expenses.

Trent Huddleston's lawsuit claims "he was directed, against his will and over his objections," to defraud the Internal Revenue Service, the Oklahoma Tax Commission and the public "in particular for the protection of . . . Richard and Lindsay Roberts . . ."

Richard Roberts is on a leave of absence as ORU president while university regents and independent auditors investigate allegations made in an earlier lawsuit by former professors John Swails, Tim Brooker, and Paulita Brooker. That suit claims the Roberts family misspent ORU and Oral Roberts Ministries money, among other allegations. Lindsay Roberts is his wife. Both are defendants in the earlier lawsuit. They have denied wrongdoing, and Richard Roberts has said that he pays for his family's personal expenses.

Huddleston's suit was filed by attorneys Gary Richardson and Paul Boudreaux. They also filed the

earlier lawsuit, as well as two lawsuits filed Wednesday from ORU students, one claiming his potential degree has been devalued and the other claiming the history department has been decimated and he cannot complete his history degree. All of the suits were filed in Tulsa County District Court.

ORU Director of Public Relations Jeremy Burton said the university declined to comment on the student cases and was reviewing Huddleston's allegations. Richard Roberts' attorney did not return a call just before 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Huddleston and the two students each are suing ORU, the ministries, their governing boards and Richard and Lindsay Roberts. Huddleston is not giving interviews, Richardson said. His lawsuit alleges he was forced to quit two weeks after the earlier lawsuit was filed, the day a financial audit was scheduled to happen.

Huddleston's lawsuit alleges the Robertses spent ORU and ministries money for personal uses through this year, including $122,886.24 to remodel their home, more than $40,000 for a swimming pool, $4,780 for a pool table and more money for a wet bar.

Huddleston alleges in his lawsuit that he "was not allowed to question the authenticity of the expenditures or their legitimacy." He claims the Robertses used donations, such as from a church, in ways other than donors intended, such as for the Robertses' house.

Richard Roberts said last week that an Oral Roberts Ministries supporter made a donation in 1986 to the ministries to build the house his family lives in. He pays taxes and rent to the ministries for living there, he said.

The house has not been remodeled multiple times, he said, but has been repaired because of damage caused by improper construction and black mold. The university is responsible for repairs to the house, he said. Once, a wall in the house was knocked out to create a larger area for entertaining large groups.

Student suits

Cornell Cross II, a student studying government formerly under the ex-professors who filed the earlier lawsuit against ORU, claims the conduct of ORU, the ministries, their boards and the Robertses "devalued and ruined the reputation of any college degree" he might attain from ORU, his lawsuit states. He alleges he would lose about half of his credits if he tried to transfer to another college, putting him further in debt.

Cross also alleges the ORU administration tried to expel him.

Cross -- along with the former professors -- says ORU has canceled the government program since those professors are no longer working there. Cross alleges ORU has been unable to replace the professors who had doctoral degrees and extensive experience.

Cross said he wants ORU "to survive and continue," but he wants Richard Roberts' immediate family, not including ORU founder Oral Roberts, to be completely removed from the university and its daily operations.

Student David Brown also filed a suit, alleging he is unable to complete his history degree with a Middle East concentration because required classes now are being taught by allegedly unqualified instructors. Brown's lawsuit says he plans to transfer to John Brown University, another private, Christian school, in Arkansas.

What a whiner. Cornell is 30 years old and a super-super senior, and if he has had such a problem with ORU, there is no reason for him to have stayed so many years. He needs to get over himself, and realize that most other students on campus do not think nearly as highly of him as he thinks of himself.

The intersection is busy but I see now that Richardson is running ou of time. He is like a vampire in fear of daylight....a new day begins when ORU board of regents meet early next week. These simple men and women of God will listen, pray and set direction for the 2nd generation of ORU. If you think for a moment thst ORU will capitlate to the cry: "Give us Barabas"...you have missed the point, stayed up too late writing blog-fiction reflecting only the pANDAMONIUM SPIRIT INSIDE YOU.

this is really sad. I wish the best for Richard and Lindsay, but I think it would be best for them to completely step aside from the university. It seems as if the majority of alumni are united in this.

While that may be true,

Cornell might have a hard time getting a job (if he ever graduates) with so much press about how much he loves lawsuits.

-

Because last I checked, employers care more about how you do your job and make yourself an asset to your company (instead of a liability), rather than what school you graduated from. Or even how long it takes you to finish an undergrad degree.

-

Just sayin.

Yes I do. I have got to know Cornell through this whole thing and he is a sharp man. However, I don't know David that well.

Do the people realize that absolute outcry and fallout that will take place if the BOR reinstates RR? It will be messy. Very messy.

He must go.

Suggestion to current students:

If Richard Roberts is reinstated as president it would be wise for you to transfer to another school. You do not have years to hang in there until Richard gets his act together.

Already enrolled in another school. If RR was gone I would consider staying but if he returns I am GONE.

Jag,

Have you read Cornell's allegations. He has a pretty good story of how he got fouled up by the firings. A better story, perhaps, than Brown. If the firings can be proven to be wrongful, he is arguably a victim too.

Sam,

Do you have any sense of how many will exit ORU if RR stays vs. goes? Are many people making alternate arrangements like you?

Cornell, Tulsa (11/22/2007 1:53:05 AM)
I do not know where this rumor about me began, but I will state this one more time, "I am NOT a super -super senior". I started college at ORU on January 3rd, 2005. That would make me a normal senior from all my calculations. Jag, you dont know me, and you really need to stop pretending you do. Get off Stephanie's payroll, she can't be paying you that well.

I really don't know. That is something kept very quiet to avoid a mass exodus but I think their would be a significant exit of students if RR remains. Not to mention the students who were thinking about going to ORU who will no longer go. (I have a friend and my sis who are no longer considering ORU)

Cornell,

Are you 30 years old? That is what is being said. Many folks would take that as someone likely to have been at the school a long time. In many cases underclassmen don't know when upperclassmen started and make assumptions.

Cornell (or Sam),

Do you know if anyone is still at ORU, or even around in Tulsa, who worked on the Randi Miller campaign? I'm sure TW, not to mention Gary Richardson, would be real interested in talking to that person.

Cornell, Tulsa (11/22/2007 2:02:00 AM)
qqq~ The answer is yes. I am 30 years old... but that doesn't mean I have been in college since 1995. I worked for almost tens years and then decided that I wanted to make an investment in my life by getting a college degree. Hence my decision to go to ORU. However, as my comments have stated, this was not the outcome I was seeking when i came here. Needless to say, I am not a bad student, but nearly all the faculty would tell you that I am respectable and friendly. People can say as they wish, but that little rumor needs to go away.

Jag, (11/22/2007 2:04:13 AM)
Actually, Cornell, I see you around campus all the time, and I've worked with you on several occasions. During those times, you acted like you had the school's best interests in mind, or at least the commuters'. Which is why it's really sad to see you actively trying to drag ORU through the mud some more.

David, Tulsa (11/22/2007 2:05:20 AM)
Forget about the student suits, they are what they are, huddleston adds merit the Prof suit. Huddleston will absolutely finish RR as it will factually discredit. The real issue now that the BOR cannot cover is the IRS. This will officially require RR to step aside for a long period while the invest grows.
Report Comment
Cornell, Tulsa (11/22/2007 2:09:41 AM)
Believe me when I say, I do not feel that I am trying to drag anything through the mud, but if you truly knew me, you would know that I never do anything unless I am passionate about it. I love what ORU stands for, but what has taken place at this school is a crime, and soon, literally, there will be criminal charges made to that effect. How that affects my degree is important to me... further, because I was peacefully speaking to students about these things, I was subject to intimidation. I will not stand by and allow that kind of culture of fear to continue, and if I am mocked and criticized for it... then let God by my Judge.

Sam, (11/22/2007 2:09:42 AM)
Yea, we talk about it a little...ok, quite a bit.

My circle of friends have no reservations of saying what is on our minds...it's refreshing. I wish more students would participate AND be willing to be enlightened.

Jag, the person dragging ORU through the mud is Richard Roberts. His actions and inactions have brought and continue to bring this mess upon ORU.
