E-mails' topic: ORU, politics
MAIL CALL
Roberts:
He says reading an e-mail doesn’t mean he heeded it.

Postings bolster a claim that students were coerced into a campaign, an attorney says.
E-mails reportedly sent to ORU President Richard Roberts back up a former professor's claim that Roberts ordered students to participate in Randi Miller's mayoral campaign, attorney Gary Richardson said Wednesday.
Miller, meanwhile, said she entered the mayoral race after a call from U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe, R-Okla., and discussions with Roberts.
In e-mails obtained by the Tulsa World, a woman named ''Stef'' sent regular e-mails for two years to Roberts' ORU e-mail address advising him on a variety of political issues. Roberts' sister-in-law, Stephanie Cantees, was paid by the Oral Roberts Evangelistic Association as a community and government liaison.
Cantees' attorney, Gerald Hilsher, said: ''Stephanie Cantees remembers the topics of some of the e-mails, but knows definitely that she did not write at least one of the e-mails'' that were provided to the Tulsa World. That e-mail concerned an alleged meeting in January between Roberts and Inhofe about the mayoral race.
Roberts said he recalled many of the subjects outlined in the e-mails but
that does not mean he took her advice. He has been on a leave of absence as ORU president since Oct. 17 while the school's board and independent auditors investigate allegations he and his family misused ORU and Oral Roberts Ministries money and resources.
Richardson filed suit in October against Roberts, Oral Roberts University and others on behalf of three former professors. The suit includes a claim by Tim Brooker, who coordinated ORU's government program, that Roberts required him to make students work for Miller's 2006 mayoral campaign.
Such a requirement could put ORU's nonprofit status at risk. A complaint was lodged with the IRS, and Brooker claims he was told to take the blame for the plan.
''What I read in the paper is consistent with what Dr. Brooker is saying and has said as set forth in the lawsuit, that there was an effort to do things in the political arena to bring power so to speak for Richard and the university,'' Richardson said.
In one e-mail dated Jan. 10, 2006, ''Stef'' writes: ''Tim will have a minimum of 100 students to surround Randi when she files at 1:00 pm Wednesday.''
The e-mail continues, stating: ''Tim is locating 2 students to assist and if she chooses run her campaign. . . . I don't want my name on financial/ethics documents -- red flag for me to be signing as a family member of ORU.''
The e-mail later states: ''Tim and I are organizing a meeting with all to determine what students can do in the races for approved candidates. He and I are aggressively coming up with the dates and topic for me to talk with students about their president and his behind-the-scenes efforts in recapturing the moral integrity in politicians.''
Richardson said he had not seen the e-mails obtained by the World and added, ''I wasn't the one who sent them.''
ORU has said the IRS ended its investigation in October with a list of recommendations to the university but no further action. ORU denied the World's request for a copy of letters it received from the IRS.
Richardson said he believes the e-mails and other documents that have surfaced since the lawsuit was filed may revive the IRS investigation.
''I would say with the scrutiny that the IRS places on the 501C3's and in view of the evidence that is coming out, it would be hard for me to think they would ignore it.''
Richardson said the e-mails reveal that Roberts is very interested in local politics.
''It's hard for me to see that that's what the university is about. For me it is about educating students. To be looking at a university as a political power base is kind of an interesting concept.''
Miller said she never would have run for mayor if she had not been told that former Mayor Bill LaFortune was accepting a private sector job and would not seek re-election. She declined to say who told her that.
Miller said she got into the race at the urging of Roberts and Inhofe.
''I was devastated. I was just uncomfortable with the situation because I had always considered Mayor LaFortune a friend, and we had a great relationship,'' she said.
Miller said about 30 ORU students worked in one of her campaign offices, and one ORU student was her campaign manager for about three weeks. She said the student, named Toby, was the college roommate of Brooker's son.
''I knew nothing of them being forced into it,'' she said.
Miller also responded to contents of e-mails that indicated she was being urged to place ORU officials on county boards.
''Stephanie Cantees wanted on the fair board, and I did not appoint her. I appointed Clark Brewster. I never appointed any of the ORU people.''
LaFortune appointed Cantees to the Tulsa Metropolitan Area Planning Commission.
Miller said she and Cantees were friends but have not spoken in more than a year.
''We just kind of lost track of each other,'' Miller said.

No wonder all the republicans around the country get all the money in their political campaigns. They are all collection plate politicians. These freeloaders are taking tax free money collected at the churches. They should be put in jail instead of put in office. Religious groups need to stay out of politics or be taxed like everyone else is in this country.

Wow.... I have never been this close to the top of a thread before. The early bird does get the worm! Trouble is, the worm is RR and that sort of leaves a taste in the mouth. Hmmmm, who would have ever guessed that Stef is saying she really didn't write the emails? Gotta love this bunch. They are providing more entertainment than Turkey day football.

ORU is not a church, its a college. We have to provision for separation of college and state.

George, separation of church and state is designed to protect both church and state from each other. If you like religion running the state, Iran is a good example of how that works out.

If we are going to have Christians in politics, we need them to have genuine honesty, integrity and to truly live on principle. We already have more than enough self seeking arrogant liars involved in our nations politics.
This kind of political involvement in order to gain influence in the system is what leads to corruption in government.

EXAMPLE OF CORRUPTION:
When any individual has enough influence in city government that the Police take a false report on what is NOT CRIMINAL, but a civil matter...then we have an example of corruption because of illegitimate influence.
Case in point: Stephanie Cantees and the Tulsa Police Department.
No other law enforcement agency in the United States of America would have taken a trespassing complaint against individuals who were representing the owner of the home in securing of her personal items.

Stephanie’s daughter is moving out of State, so I think your information is wrong. And yes, it is so sad what has been done to Vicki by her assistant Judy Upjohn. She stole Vicki’s money, has her living like an animal, and Judy is now in trouble with the Tulsa Police for breaking into Vicki’s old house (with a bunch of ORU people) and trying to take pictures and run someone over!
*************************
Of course, this is the kind of information that gets promoted when law abiding citizens are under gag orders and matters are all handled in closed secret court hearings.
Is Tulsa in the United States of America?

this whole situation has been hitting in crashing waves, some larger, some smaller, but all reminding us that it is far from over. the waves are weakening the walls, the hurricane has yet to hit full force. if we are not prepared for the brunt of it, i would think the time to get out would be now. quit while we are behind. cut your loses, head for high country, dont look back, god will meet you there.

I am a republican and I can honestly say that even without the ORU debacle, Randi Miller has been a total bust as a County Commissioner. I was already sorry i voted for her and did not to intend to vote for her next time. This is more affirmation of her bad judgement(Bells, the river tax...). Do Tulsa County and the city of Tulsa a favor and don't run again, Randi. We can't afford you any more.

All Tim Brooker had to do was; JUST SAY NO!
Tim Brooker, the know it all budget/financial/political smarty pants that got thrown out of Federal Bankruptcy Court in Arkansas; knows all about running a political campaign and the laws that guide a campaign, (according to Tim Brooker himself) should have said; I can't do that. If you force me to do that, I am out of here. Did Tim Brooker do that? NO! Why did he not do that? Because he has a history of associating with known criminals and he thought he could get away with it. And at best, make a few dollars with some interesting blackmail. Guess what? Just like his Bankruptcy got thrown out of court, his Blackmail scam got exposed.
By no means am I saying ORU does not deserve what they are getting, but, this is what happens when you bring a snke into your house.

It was Richard Roberts' and Billy Joe Daugherty's friendship with LaFortune when he was mayor that got the city to install signal lights at the entrances to ORU and Victory Christian Center. LaFortune bypassed the regular channels to have those traffic signal lights put up and he just authorized them himself. ORU and VCC should have been the ones who paid for the lights which the city would have installed for them.
Churches should not expect the city to grant them special favors.

There is no question that much of what is going on here is very sad. I could list a dozen ways easily. The Roberts family will never recover. How deeply they will be hurt only time will tell. No one wants their dirty laundry washed in public, and this, unfortunately, is a family with a lot.
.
The real question is whether it is necessary to take ORU down in the process.
.
Oral was/is a builder. His ambitions exceeded his abilities. But, isn't ORU better than His & Her jet planes. CityPlex too. Not what was intended, but no Rolls Royces.
.
I hope some of what Oral built outlives him. The irony is that their success requires that he lets go. If he had let go back in 1993 it would have been much easier. Richard hasn't built, he has consumed. He hasn't been a big financial abuser, but a petty one. That is why we see Chico's bills instead of Tiffany or Paris designers. Million dollar houses, not $20 million dollar ones. $500 hotel rooms, not $10,000 ones. There are many very rich in this country, and there are places that serve them. These folks are not in that bracket.
.
Worse, Richard isn't loved, not even particularly respected. When that happens only fear is left, and the collection of hanger's on who share some of the droppings from the king's table. Oral is too smart not to see what is happening here. What a bitter blow for him.
.
I don't know what Oral would actually have done if he had won over the faculty. Unfortunately, he is very secretive and whatever he did would have been done in secret. I find it very hard to believe he would just have put RR back in place and retired back to CA. I think he would have moved to Tulsa and led from behind the scenes for as long as he is able. But then what?
.
If you read Jerry Sholes book he talks of how worried folks in the organization were about succession. This is back in the late 1970's. There is actually not a huge amount about Richard in the book. What there is isn't complimentary. I don't think anyone really imagined Oral would trust Richard. That is probably one of the reasons why Oral hung on until he was 75.
.
At this point, the Richard Roberts family are damaged goods. They will never be able to lead a University effectively. I even have doubts whether the Ministry will survive. Oral used to be number 1. Now, they are certainly smaller than any of the 6 ministries under investigation by Grassley.
.
I very much hope Oral opts for a physical legacy at ORU rather than continuing his attempt at a Dynasty. That hasn't worked very well to this point and looks like it would work considerably worse in the future.
