Roberts resigns
Richard Roberts

Move follows lawsuits, allegations
Embattled Oral Roberts University President Richard Roberts resigned Friday following nearly two months of allegations that he and his family misused university and ministry resources.
In his resignation letter, Roberts states: "I love ORU with all my heart. I love the students, faculty, staff and administration and I want to see God's best for all of them."
Roberts' letter, sent to the Board of Regents, states his resignation was effective Friday. The board is meeting Monday and Tuesday to determine its search process for a new president, university spokesman Jeremy Burton said in a statement.
"Executive Regent Billy Joe Daugherty will continue to assume administrative responsibilities of the office of the president, working together with Chancellor Oral Roberts, until the regents meeting," Burton stated.
The announcement follows weeks of bad news for Roberts and the university, including an overwhelming faculty vote of "no confidence" in Roberts and a state ment by Provost Mark Lewandowski that he would resign if Roberts were allowed to return.
Several faculty members said
Friday they had heard the board was poised to vote next week on whether to retain Roberts as president. He has been on a leave of absence since Oct. 17, a few weeks after three former professors filed a lawsuit against him, ORU and other defendants in Tulsa County District Court.
Rhae Buckley, president of the ORU Alumni Association board, said he hopes the university moves quickly to find a new president.
"I'm not surprised. I know that Richard really loved the university and he wants to do what he feels is right for the university," Buckley said.
Cornell Cross, an ORU student who filed a suit against the university last week, said: "It's an excellent second step in fixing the university. Now we just need the board to continue to do what is expected of them."
Among other claims, Cross' suit alleges his degree has been devalued by the controversy.
John Swails, one of the plaintiffs in the lawsuit filed by the former professors Oct. 2, said Friday he was "completely taken by surprise" when he heard Roberts had resigned. Swails was professor and chairman of the history, humanities and govern ment department before he was fired.
"I felt like from all the indications this was going to be a fight to the very last. . . . It's kind of sad that it has come to this. Based on what we know, for the good of the university he should have stepped down much, much earlier. I understand that students are leaving and money is diminishing."
ORU announced recently it was $52 million in debt.
Tulsa attorney Gary Richardson, who filed the suit on behalf of Swails and two others, said he expected Roberts to resign.
"To those that know what the evidence is that's come forth and those who know what is anticipated to follow, it's absolutely no surprise. We wouldn't have been surprised had it happened weeks ago."
Richardson said the lawsuit will continue, regardless of Roberts' resignation. He said the plaintiffs are open to mediating the lawsuit's claims.
"It could be a move in the right direction to be able maybe one day sit down and discuss mediation," he said.
The other plaintiffs in the lawsuit are Timothy Brooker, who coordinated ORU's government program, and his wife, Paulita Brooker, an adjunct professor who was first hired for the ORU School of Lifelong Education.
They sued ORU, Roberts, Lewandowski, Dean Wendy Shirk and Vice Provost Jeff Ogle. The former professors also claim that the Board of Regents neglected to properly oversee ORU, Roberts and administrators.
The lawsuit claims that Roberts required Brooker to make his students work for Tulsa mayoral candidate Randi Miller's campaign, in violation of laws that prohibit nonprofit groups from getting involved in partisan political campaigns. It also claims the professors were fired or forced out after they brought the board a report containing a variety of allegations against Roberts and his wife, Lindsay.
The report contained allegations of misspending by the pair, including a $39,000 shopping tab at one store for Lindsay, a $29,411 Bahamas senior trip on the ministry jet for one of the Roberts' daughters, and a stable of horses for the Roberts' daughters.
Roberts issued a rebuttal to some of the lawsuit's allegations, saying many of the claims are either false or are misconstruing actual events. Roberts said some of the claims came from a report by his sister-in-law, Stephanie Cantees, who was paid to report rumors she had heard about ORU or the ministry.
An outside firm is conducting an investigation of the university. Sources said the report may be released to regents at their meeting next week.

Richard Roberts stepped down because the word was out that the Regents were going to ask him to do so during their meetings next week. He beat them to it.

God will take care of Richard and all of them.
they will be "called" to start a new religious scam in the near future. Meanwhile, i hope the IRS investigates too. Sounds like a lot of unreported income.

The Regents must judge themselves before the Lord because they have allowed fiscal irresponsibility to happen for many years. Nepotism and cronyism should not be a part of any decision making if we are living under the authority of the Holy Spirit's direction.

Look for "disposition of steph cantees out of ORU functions. There must be a house cleaning of all family and friends jobs that are boondogles. THose positions that are not producing and not necessary must go. This needs to happen quickly and susinctly. This needs to be reported so the public can know that things are moving forward.

This action needs to happen fast. It is part of the house cleaning..........

Dear Tulsa World, I am not sure if you are unaware.... But there are about 5000 other students you could quote other than that media whore Cornell Cross. (Who has many a skeleton in his own closet to be concerned about).
Thoughtfully,
Current Student

It is quite humerous. The level in which the faculty at ORU is perceived to be at. People need to take the rose colored glasses off. If students were to compile the stories of things that faculty members have pulled on them there would not be this blind faith that the faculty truly holds the best for the students. Ha.

I can tell you it is discouraging and breaks my heart to hear so many bitter people who seem to see a way to get back at ORU. You were not forced to be there and those of us who went and love the school are the ones who have a voice. Don't try to tear apart something you don't even care about. ORU is an incredible place and most ORU students and Alumni agree...everyone makes mistakes and has issues...don't take your problems out on the Roberts when your realy angry at the fact that you couldn't find a place to go that would pat you on the hand and justify your actions...no compromise or else we are like everyone else

REPLY TO :29. 11/24/2007 1:11:28 PM, Barbara,
"Praise God! He is finally moving to remove all the Word of Faith false prophets. The cutting will be precise. This is only the beginning. Oral will be brought down with the rest of them"
Let me tell you something, Oral had done more on accident for Tulsa, and bringing back the gifts of the spirit to churchs knowledge, than you smarmy right wing fundalmantalist ever did for anybody, truth be told I put you and the Word Of Faith[while I do not share their prosperity message, and it is different that Seed Faith] crowd in the same boat, except at least the WOF does not think they have a corner on church doctrine. You almost sound like that group from that baptist church in Kansas that pickets funerals of American soldiers.

there is NO WAY that RR is going to be completly out. So I can see him becoming Chancellor. He is too used to the money, the power and huge house which is more like a compound (I've seen it). This is just like Jim and Tammy Bakker revisited, I hope even if they do "mediate" that the facts and tax information is still released to the public.
I don't think it's about money because the plaintiffs are only asking for about 20,000.

Don't worry about the Roberts family, or the OREA. Soon both the IRS and Senator Grassley will be "inviting" them to chat about financial matters.

Incidentally, the weekly take by the OREA and all the other crooked TV "ministries" is now declining even faster than real estate in California. Thanks to the scandal at ORU, religious fraud for profit is getting the exposure it deserves.

Finally a step in the right direction.
Now ORU Board of Regents needs to find a President far, far, far removed from all this controversy.
I respect Dr. Lewandowski and hope he remains as Provost, but we truly need an outside President.
A true, respected Academic whose degrees are not from ORU. We need a President not listed in any lawsuit and not part of the good-ole-boys club of the BOR.
Hopefully, ORU BOR will have enough intelligence to find someone:
1. Not from Tulsa
2. Not a graduate of ORU
3. Has earned a Ph.D.
4. Has experience in higher education administration
5. Is saved and Spirit-filled
6. Would focus on instilling high academic standards and ethical leadership to the university.
I challenge the BOR to step up to the plate and find someone fresh -- not another carbon copy of the current leadership.
I challenge you, BOR, to do the right thing for the university...for once, quit thinking about yourselves, your mega-ministry status, your popularity, and make a solid choice for this University.
Regards,
* B.S. in Business Mgmt., '99 ORU Alum
* M.B.A., '07 Texas A&M

RR and his wife have redefined irresponsibility to the nth degree. I mean come on...800 dollar a month cell phone bills...20 some odd cell phones for LR in a 21 month period...horses and house for the girls...trips to the islands for the girls...selling a Benz paid for by the University and pocketting the funds...then buying it back probably with more ORU funds to cover your tracks...19 year "boyfriends" living with you...Does anyone know if RR regulary visits Amsterdam or Thailand it wouldn't surprise me at all...and the list goes on and on and on...well my point is when you have that much responsibility one must conduct and carry oneself appropriately...RR and crew have let it go to their heads...happens to better people all the time everyday...he has been forced to resign a 180K a year job...what a loser...
GOOD RIDDANCE!!! Now if you and your clan will move to California we'll all be so much happier in T Town... :)

There is no way that Billy Joe "MP' Daugherty needs to be president, although I have now been told by a very reliable source he is more openly promoting himself to his fellow WORD OF FAITH friends on the BOARD OF REGENTS. Folks this is the problem with the school, we need to get back to our PENTECOSTAL/CHARISMATIC moorings, and the leave the Copelands, Creflo Dollar et al behind. If they truly gave a D@#^ about ORU, with the massive wealth they have, they could have paid off most of the debt, instead they used ORU and Oral to build their massive ministries.
Truth be told, I wish Oral would "cash in some of his CHIPS", demand if these people who want to be on the BOR, that they cough up more than their paltry $10,000 that most of their ministries pay so they can sit on the BOR.
Billy Joe is not the answer to the problem, THEY ARE PART OF THE PORBLEM!!!

Doesn't the act of forgiveness follow an acknowledgement of wrongdoing, of someone acknowledging they've wronged another and they are sorry, and they are seeking forgiveness of the wronged party(ies). Has that happened? No, I don't think so. I believe everyone involved on these blogs would be more than willing to forgive--if a humble RR & LR actually acknowledged what they've done to people over the years, said they were truly sorry, and repented (changed directions). We're not monsters on this blog. But we're not gullible either.

Just keep in mind that Richard Roberts
is still chairman of Oral Roberts Ministries
and ORU is still part of Oral Roberts Ministries. Also, Stephanie Cantees is
employed by OREA nor ORU so her status is for the OREA Trustees and management to decide not the ORU Regents. as far as I am concerned that
is an internal matter and you people should lay off and shutup.

Two down and three to go! Namely, the 3 hypocrites who swilled on the teats adjacent to those suckled by Richard and Lindsay all those years and who only complained when they themselves were cut off. Hopefully their suit will get tossed out of court. If they were naive enough not to know about this stuff 30 years ago, they had no right to the title of "Professor"

Praise God! He is finally moving to remove all the Word of Faith false prophets. The cutting will be precise. This is only the beginning. Oral will be brought down with the rest of them. His seed faith theology and all that goes with it has produced rotten fruit. Many, many people have been seriously harmed by these monsters. The seed in Scripture is the Word of God and never money. This is a perversion of God's Word and you cannot twist Scripture without paying a price. To all those reading this who think they can buy their way into heaven by giving money to these "ministries", please know that the only way to be saved is by giving your heart, mind and soul to Jesus Christ, nothing more and nothing less!
