Roberts resigns
Richard Roberts

Move follows lawsuits, allegations
Embattled Oral Roberts University President Richard Roberts resigned Friday following nearly two months of allegations that he and his family misused university and ministry resources.
In his resignation letter, Roberts states: "I love ORU with all my heart. I love the students, faculty, staff and administration and I want to see God's best for all of them."
Roberts' letter, sent to the Board of Regents, states his resignation was effective Friday. The board is meeting Monday and Tuesday to determine its search process for a new president, university spokesman Jeremy Burton said in a statement.
"Executive Regent Billy Joe Daugherty will continue to assume administrative responsibilities of the office of the president, working together with Chancellor Oral Roberts, until the regents meeting," Burton stated.
The announcement follows weeks of bad news for Roberts and the university, including an overwhelming faculty vote of "no confidence" in Roberts and a state ment by Provost Mark Lewandowski that he would resign if Roberts were allowed to return.
Several faculty members said Friday they had heard the board was poised to vote next week on whether to retain Roberts as president. He has been on a leave of absence since Oct. 17, a few weeks after three former professors filed a lawsuit against him, ORU and other defendants in Tulsa County District Court.
Rhae Buckley, president of the ORU Alumni Association board, said he hopes the university moves quickly to find a new president.
"I'm not surprised. I know that Richard really loved the university and he wants to do what he feels is right for the university," Buckley said.
Cornell Cross, an ORU student who filed a suit against the university last week, said: "It's an excellent second step in fixing the university. Now we just need the board to continue to do what is expected of them."
Among other claims, Cross' suit alleges his degree has been devalued by the controversy.
John Swails, one of the plaintiffs in the lawsuit filed by the former professors Oct. 2, said Friday he was "completely taken by surprise" when he heard Roberts had resigned. Swails was professor and chairman of the history, humanities and govern ment department before he was fired.
"I felt like from all the indications this was going to be a fight to the very last. . . . It's kind of sad that it has come to this. Based on what we know, for the good of the university he should have stepped down much, much earlier. I understand that students are leaving and money is diminishing."
ORU announced recently it was $52 million in debt.
Tulsa attorney Gary Richardson, who filed the suit on behalf of Swails and two others, said he expected Roberts to resign.
"To those that know what the evidence is that's come forth and those who know what is anticipated to follow, it's absolutely no surprise. We wouldn't have been surprised had it happened weeks ago."
Richardson said the lawsuit will continue, regardless of Roberts' resignation. He said the plaintiffs are open to mediating the lawsuit's claims.
"It could be a move in the right direction to be able maybe one day sit down and discuss mediation," he said.
The other plaintiffs in the lawsuit are Timothy Brooker, who coordinated ORU's government program, and his wife, Paulita Brooker, an adjunct professor who was first hired for the ORU School of Lifelong Education.
They sued ORU, Roberts, Lewandowski, Dean Wendy Shirk and Vice Provost Jeff Ogle. The former professors also claim that the Board of Regents neglected to properly oversee ORU, Roberts and administrators.
The lawsuit claims that Roberts required Brooker to make his students work for Tulsa mayoral candidate Randi Miller's campaign, in violation of laws that prohibit nonprofit groups from getting involved in partisan political campaigns. It also claims the professors were fired or forced out after they brought the board a report containing a variety of allegations against Roberts and his wife, Lindsay.
The report contained allegations of misspending by the pair, including a $39,000 shopping tab at one store for Lindsay, a $29,411 Bahamas senior trip on the ministry jet for one of the Roberts' daughters, and a stable of horses for the Roberts' daughters.
Roberts issued a rebuttal to some of the lawsuit's allegations, saying many of the claims are either false or are misconstruing actual events. Roberts said some of the claims came from a report by his sister-in-law, Stephanie Cantees, who was paid to report rumors she had heard about ORU or the ministry.
An outside firm is conducting an investigation of the university. Sources said the report may be released to regents at their meeting next week.

Richard Roberts stepped down because the word was out that the Regents were going to ask him to do so during their meetings next week. He beat them to it.

God will take care of Richard and all of them.
they will be "called" to start a new religious scam in the near future. Meanwhile, i hope the IRS investigates too. Sounds like a lot of unreported income.

The Regents must judge themselves before the Lord because they have allowed fiscal irresponsibility to happen for many years. Nepotism and cronyism should not be a part of any decision making if we are living under the authority of the Holy Spirit's direction.

Look for "disposition of steph cantees out of ORU functions. There must be a house cleaning of all family and friends jobs that are boondogles. THose positions that are not producing and not necessary must go. This needs to happen quickly and susinctly. This needs to be reported so the public can know that things are moving forward.

This action needs to happen fast. It is part of the house cleaning..........

We will be able to tell if the regents are putting ORU on the right path by watching who they choose as the new president. If the new president has significant experience in academic administration, that's a good sign. But if it's just another preacher with no experience in running universities and no academic credentials (like Billy Joe), then the future will be just like the past.
.
Let's also watch the future role of Richard and Lindsay. If they are kept on the Board of Regents, it's a bad sign. Richard can still be the face of ORM, but since ORM spends more on its television shows than the contributions they receive, who needs ORM anymore? Shut it down! Richard can finish his career the way his father started: traveling around with a tent and healing people. Overhead is much lower that way.
.
As far as changing the name of the school: that will happen at about the same time that they change the name of the J. Edgar Hoover FBI Building.

on mediation of the suits,
-
Does mediation imply stopping the truth from coming out? Does it imply now settling for money and a job back? What does mediation imply or invovle?
-
The path of this suit will show the true heart motives of those who were invovled. If everything on their agenda does not get taken care of then they willl beocme part of the problem.
-
Gary richardson said that they want the truth out. What truth? When? How? Or will some of the truth get buried in a so called settlement? No gary, the public wants the settlement to include the settleing of the truth.
-
We want the truth. That has not changed gary. gary richardson and the plaintiffs, you said you wanted the truth out and you wanted real and perminent change across many different aspectgs of ORU. Has that changed? It better not or you willl look like bigger fools and money grubbing hustlers - bigger than the roberts............
-
You best be careful of what you do from here on in the suit. Truth is waiting to come forth. Gary, this is much bigger than you are isn't it? The spreading of the tenticles and the web that this includes.
-
if you setlte, you will become part of the problem -meaning burying things under the rug and the roberts will have won no matter how much money you get for the plantiffs and yourself. Isnt that right gary and the plaintiffs.

We are watching...............

Mediation, former... Mediation means resolving the problems w/o goint to court. Hiding the resolution is somewhat easier because the agreement is not binding.... Mediation means an amicable resolution. For all the idealists that think this suit is not for personal gain, wake up. In every suit there is a winner and a loser. This time it may be the gallery that is disappointed. Sure richardson will say we want the truth to come out.... He is negotiating.

I am deeply sorry to use the space of Tulsa World and the ORU crisis to express my indignation, outrage, and frustration at the current anemic, hypocritical self-centred Christian ministires that are visible to the whole world through television. Unfortunatley the services, preaching, singing, prayers, worship of thousands of genuine, godly, sincere, people of America are hardly seen on world wide television. What we see is pushing innocent people to give the impression that they are being slain in the Spirit, begging for money when those who do so are using gold and marble restrooms!
It seems, that preachers are praying for a financial miracle at most of the services. Is Christianity degenerated to only paying one's bills.
Hallulujahs and shoutings are a sign that there is much froth and bubble among them. It us time for all of us to spend some hours repenting and confessing our sins in such a time as this. Pardon my outrage. I love America and its churches and its preciouis people

expert in shortcomings
, Springfield, Missouri (11/24/2007 11:21:12 AM)
As a former ORU student(already condemned and ready for flogging in many people's minds), I urge caution and reflection about one's own shortcomings. I do not want to be misunderstood, we should always do our very best to exemplify the nature and demeanor of Jesus Christ and when we fail, be forth- coming and admit our sins/mistakes/bad decisions. And in so doing, whether we be the offender, and must humble ourselves and do everything that we can to repay and turn from our sins, or whether we be the offended, and realize that we also have a responsibility to understand that all have been offenders and offended, the only difference is the particular area in which we offend. Personally, my wife of 28 years (also a former ORU student) and I would like to see ORU pattern itself after Hillsdale College as concerning taxes and government financing(Hillsdale takes no tax financing, nor does it allow students to attend that take government financing). This one change would do one thing for certain if it did nothing else at all and that is, it would allow those who worship money to focus their time and attention on the
entities in our society that waste vast sums of money with little or no real benefit other than to line the pockets of a few power brokers. As for me and my house, we have received real and measurable benefit from ORU... the kind of benefit that is ongoing and will be acknowledged by the one "to whom every knee will bow and every tongue will confess...". I believe that we should always try to be more understand- ing, slow to speak, quick to hear and quick to treat each other the way that we want to be treated when we are caught in a fault, the benefits of this way of living will change society as a whole, for the better.
Remember the principle of forgiveness, those who have been forgiven little, love little and those who have been forgiven much, love much.

21 your point on forgiveness is well taken, but we are not talking about forgiveness. The full truth needs to come out so that the whole process of forgiveness can be done. Keep in mind, there has been no admssions of guilt in the specific areas, the truth has not been owned and so how can forgiveness be given. Some will cry oh lets forgive richard and moe on, but that is a lessen in stupidity, foolishness and lack of wisdom. Should we be willing to forgive, yes. Do we need to forgive - yes. Do we need to hold richard and lyndsey and others accountable, yes - Accountability comes first, then they can decide whether they will humble themselves or not. The carpet is still being peeled back...

Everyone should forgive Richard and Lindsay for their misdeeds (whatever they may be) and move on. But forgiving them does not mean placing them back in positions of trust and responsibility. They seem to have proven that they are poorly qualified for that.
.
Forgiving doesn't mean turning a blind eye. If Richard and Lindsay have any future role in the management of ORU, then ORU is doomed.

Richard and Lindsey are doing the right thing. They should also stop all their ministry tv programming. That would save money. The university needs to stay afloat as it does serve a great need and the students need to stay focused. The city of Tulsa needs that university as well as TU. (Both private universities) One forgets that TU also was a Christian university when it started. As a former employee of ORU, I knew one day, this would mushroom one day. Selling off the tv station, getting rid of uncessary equipment is the right move. ORU is a great university and a beautiful campus. The Mabee Center is a great facility for South Tulsa. I hope it all works out.

Doesn't the act of forgiveness follow an acknowledgement of wrongdoing, of someone acknowledging they've wronged another and they are sorry, and they are seeking forgiveness of the wronged party(ies). Has that happened? No, I don't think so. I believe everyone involved on these blogs would be more than willing to forgive--if a humble RR & LR actually acknowledged what they've done to people over the years, said they were truly sorry, and repented (changed directions). We're not monsters on this blog. But we're not gullible either.
