Richard Roberts: God said to resign

Richard Roberts told Oral Roberts University students Wednesday that God spoke to him last Thursday — and told him to resign.

Students cheered and cried as Roberts spoke for a few minutes at the school’s chapel service Wednesday, five days after he resigned as the school’s president.

Roberts said that God told him to step down.

He said he initially resisted the instructions, but God told him that if he would resign, the school would be blessed ‘‘supernaturally.’’

Roberts resigned Friday. On Tuesday, Yukon businessman Mart Green promised the school up to $70 million, more than enough to erase the school’s debt.

Roberts was under pressure to step down after three former professors sued ORU and alleged excessive spending on the part of the Roberts family.

Roberts told the students the lawsuit nearly destroyed his family.

He said he has heard several lies and rumors about him and that he even contemplated filing a countersuit, but God told him not to do so.

“We love you, President Roberts,” one student shouted during the chapel service.

“We don’t want you to go,” another shouted.

Following the chapel service, students said they were relieved at the news of Green’s

promise to the school.

“I’m really excited and to be honest, we need the money,” said student Desire’e Mondesir.

“Roberts did a good job in turning in his resignation . . . (although) I know he loves the school.”

Student Evan Herrman said, “I wish he was still our president, but he’s doing what God asked him to do.”

You have to protect your family first, before you can do anything else, he said. Student Carmen Gonzalez said she is saddened and shocked by the lawsuit allegations.

While some students support Roberts, others do not, she said.

What I wrote about David Green first contacting Billy Joe Daugherty did not come from the Tulsa World Articles. It came from AP articles and NewsOK dot com articles and a NewsOK online video.

100. 11/29/2007 11:46:06 AM, Can't wait for you to fall..., Rochester

Your ONLY loyalty should be to God, and the Word as it is clearly written!

You think it is a commendation to go on supporting someone who preaches contrary to the Word?? That's rediculous!! I find your comments very enlightening as to the throngs who claim the name Christ, yet follow men and deny God. If you want to follow RR follow him! Nobody here will stop you. We all have free will to serve whoever we want. Go for it. God bless you in your walk.

Ol city boy, (11/29/2007 12:21:48 PM)
ORU has had other Angels come to its aid in time of need, but only to have their wings clipped. Here's hoping that Mr. Green will provide the oversight and accountability that has been so sorely lacking for many years.

Present students, alumni and those following this story may be learning some invaluable lessons in life that no professor or number of degrees would provide:

1) There may be Old/New Testaments with scriptures for all of us to use in our daily lives as well as Commandments, but He also gave us a good mind to use our intellect and judgment. You wouldn't put your purse or billfold on a Tulsa street corner downtown and come back in an hour and expect it to be there. Why, because not everybody believes AND practices the scriptures. Life is made-up of options and choices. Some in ANY position, industry or organization is capable of choosing the wrong options or choices.

2) Just think of those in leadership positions within religion that have fallen from grace....many with sexual promiscuity: Paul Crouch, Jimmy Swaggart, Jim Bakker, Robert Tilton, Ted Haggard and numerous Catholic priests across the country. This isn't confined to religion either. It happens in business/industry, the entertainment business, politics (both parties) and professional athletics as well. My point is whether the be called a congregation, fans, admirers, viewers, voters or a parish/diocese - they MUST to be accountable and held to a higher standard since they have the trust (if not dollars) of many in their control. We only have to look at the head of the Red Cross who wasn't in his new job 6 months before using more than poor judgment and having to resign.

"It's my ____________ (church, business, career, university, car, lethal weapon, etc.) and I'll do what I want." is unacceptable. Some people learn or are learning this the hard way I'm afraid.

I'm not charging anybody with anything as I don't have all of the facts like others, before someone wants to straighten me out. I AM saying that EVERYBODY in a leadership position ANYWHERE needs and MUST be accountable with full transparency....ESPECIALLY when other peoples money is involved - whether it be a university, church, bank, city/state/federal official (elected or appointed), mutual fund manager or CFO of a company.

With all the fringe/extremist cult like "religious" groups in this big country of ours we can all be thankful there are so few "colleges" feeding this delusional beast, ie BYU, Bob Jones, Liberty, Pepperdine, and ORU come to mind. When folks call others "haters" they do so to place the other person as irrational and therefore they do not have to present a rational or logical argument. Right wingers do this all the time by labeling those against the Iraq War or the rising and out of control deficit as "Bush Haters". There really is no logical argument that can be made for the Roberts' thieveing antics over the decades, but "faith", which is irrational. #99- Oral saw the 600 pound Jesus in the desert behind his Rancho whatever mansion so it wouldn't have been on the Jones Airport radar.

REPLY#37.Why bash all of TBN pastors? all are not bad. Some I wonder about but most of them are doing Gods work the way they should. Just because RR has fallen and will pay for what he has done. He may be fogiven by GOD, but there are prices you have to pay for breaking Gods laws that is the way it works.

No body is going to jail; either in Tulsa, Ft Worth, Atlanta , St. Louis, or Tampa. No ministry is going to be closed or lose the nfp status. Some may be down sized because their donations drop. The reality is that just because you think someone is a character, heretical, and dishonest doesn't mean they are or that they are breaking any laws. I can't see myself ever sending money to someone to buy a second, faster jet when they have one already. But apparently a lot of other people will. I would never give a donation to buy anyone a Roll Royce. But a lot of people will. Welcome to America. What goes on in other peoples churches is none of our business.

Support who you want. Believe what you want but recognize that others have the same right.

Yeah, gotta delete Pepperdine from the list, my point of reference was the 60's when pep officials were saying all kinds of racist stuff that they apparently grew out of, note that ole self-righteous Ken Starr is Dean of Law School-still shudders at the thought of that thong, I'll bet. Achievements of grads alone separates it from others mentioned, several beauty queens and major league ball players.

Your post encouraged me. My husband and I have " come out" of organized, denominational religion and for now fellowship online with the Unleavened Bread Ministry. Some have had dreams about "well known" ministers repenting for the errorneous doctrines that they had been teaching. It would be very hard I would think to stand in front of thousands of people and admit that the doctrines you have been teaching were false, but a few will ( very few). The group we fellowship with pray for those who's hearts God is really speaking too that they will humble themselves and love God and Truth more than man, money, fame and the world in general.

I do hope you are right as there won't be many that love the truth enough to come out. We continue to pray for those who will.

I just wanted to tell you that their will be some and perhaps you are correct, keep praying!

Well MO alum, are we a better people/country for allowing a system which rewards con artists for taking pensions from the gullible? As I recall, the Old Test mentions reserving all the hot virgins for the priests, who just so happened to write the thing. Tribal witch doctors expect and receive special consideration. What is the point of cultural/scientific advancement if supernaturalists are encouraged to rip off our fellow citizenry?

----------------------------------

ORU and Liberty are not cult schools. Both of these schools are interdenominational. RR was trying to change it, but he couldn't do it very well because he needed all the interdenominational IMO, any major influence would be in the theology majors which were a small part of the student body. Anyway, I would rather have the profs at ORU teaching my kids than the weirdo prof with the pony tail that was fired from a public university. I think my kids were better off with the stricter rules than public universities. I think my kids were a lot safer in the dorm with some like minded friends than some of the university catastrophes I have read about in the last months.

I do not have any personal knowledge with the other colleges mentioned. JMO.

i have just seen some things in the past were if the local ppl and the leadership doesnt jump in with the new prospect, the new prospect checks the temp and says it is not worth the cost.

i dont know about anyone else, i was hoping that would be different now, excuse me for thinking. i guess it had to come to this.
