House Speaker Lance Cargill: Additional restrictions might not have support.

A law making English the state's official language is all that is needed now, he says.

OKLAHOMA CITY -- House Speaker Lance Cargill said Wednesday that he thinks a bill to make English the state's official language is about as far as the Legislature ought to go next session in toughening laws on illegal immigration.

Fellow Republican Rep. Randy Terrill, who successfully sponsored a stringent immigration reform bill last session, said he wants more laws passed, including one authorizing the seizure of property and assets of people who hire illegal immigrants or knowingly rent property to them.

On the other side of the issue, Republican Sen. Harry Coates of Seminole is calling for repealing sections of last session's House Bill 1804 dealing with penalties against those who harbor and assist illegal immigrants. Portions of that legislation went into effect Nov. 1.

"Some on the right would like additional employer penalties," said Cargill, R-Harrah. "Some on the left clearly want to repeal House Bill 1804 outright, or at least significant sections. But I don't think the people of Oklahoma want the law to go away."

Making English the official language in Oklahoma, like 30 other states have done, would be a unifying force for the state, he said.

"English as the official language would have broad support," Cargill said.

But the speaker raised doubts that there will be widespread

support for further immigration legislation.

"I don't know what the support level would be for additional restrictions," he said.

Terrill said Wednesday that he has not had a chance to talk with the speaker about proposed legisla tion for the upcoming session that Terrill has labeled "Son of 1804."

"I am sure the speaker is aware of what I have put on the table," he said. "But I am absolutely thrilled that the speaker would give his blessing to proceed with a bill making English the official language."

The Rev. Victor Orta of Tulsa, president of the American Dream Coalition, said he is pleased that immigration legislation in the coming session might be limited. However, he said there is no need to make English the official language.

Regarding Terrill's proposal to seize the property of those who violate the new immigration law, Cargill said this is "a very complicated issue, and I don't know what the support would be at this juncture."

Terrill also has talked about denying the issuance of birth certificates for children born to parents who are in the United States illegally.

Some people question whether such a move would violate federal law, which recognizes the children as U.S. citizens.

"We need to tone down the rhetoric and try to work in a constructive way to do what is best for the state," Cargill said.

He noted that a provision affecting private employers does not go into effect until July 1. He said the legislation's effective date was intentionally set so that there would be time to "examine and refine to the extent that there are rough edges that can be smoothed."

Cargill said now is the time to listen to employers and find out how the legislation will affect their businesses.

"Certainly the business community will have thoughts and comments on further sanctions," he said, "and I think the majority of the Legislature will be cognizant of that fact."

Hooray for "son of 1804"! Make English the official state language. The politicos need to work on amending the US Constitution to eliminate automatic citizenship for babies born to ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT parents. The loophole for anchor babies needs to be closed.

We should also halt or reform the bilingual education provided in public schools at taxpayer expense.

The focus should be on immigrants learning English, not simply teaching them in Spanish.

Many have questioned the current policy of anchor babies being legitimate now. I haven't adequately researched it myself but it appears that the legality of granting birthright citizenship to children born on our soil when the parents are here illegally is based on interpretation of the 14th ammendment. The policy is questionable without changing the existing law.

I am all for efforts to stop the invasion of undocumented illegal immigration.

To those leaders who are working to protect Oklahoma, American and it's citizens - you have my applause and votes.

We are bound to hear lots of arguments and whining from businesses who have increased their profits by utilizing cheaper, undocumented employees.

Honest businesses managed before the invasion and they will manage once it's stopped. Those who don't want to do business honestly should find another way to earn a living.

go to mexico and you will find the official language is spanish and if you want english you have to pay to take english classes. when you come to america then do what our culture is, if not go back to where you came from. don't try to bring your culture here. you can get your culture where you came from.

"Go back where you came from"!?! Christ, you people are some ignorant fools. How many of you were spawned from Red, White and Blue American soil?

Yes, English as a unifying language has helped assimilate our country, including YOUR immigrant ancestors, but making it the official language is clearly just racist reactionism. Look at any study, second generation immigrants are almost totally bilingual, and 3rd generation typically do not speak the mother tongue. You people just don't want Mexicans here, legally or not.

And as for eliminating birth rights, that is ridiculous. How about we take away jury trials, the 2nd Amendment, or anything else that is unpopular at the moment.

English already is the official language of Oklahoma, oops, so is indian. We could have the English speaking sections of Oklahoma and the Indian speaking sections. Maybe throw in an Ebonics section, and have a speach police to write tickets to anyone caught not speaking English in the right section. Gonna be an interesting bill Cargill.

If we make English the state's official language, the public schools will have to revamp their programs to start accommodating English speaking students. Aren't the children of illegal aliens more important than our own children? Don't they have more rights than our own children do? An Oklahoma that addresses the needs of it's citizens' children first ... I am so confused....

#9 - English is currently NOT Oklahoma's official language ; hence the proposal. One of the tangible tax-payer funded practices it would seek to eliminate would include bilingual driver licensing. Again, why should we have to fund programs for people who want to be on our highways but may not even be able to read the road signs ??

CG in sand springs...'

What's ridiculous is an illegal immigrant mother eight months pregnant crossing the border just to give birth to her child on US soil. It happens ALL THE TIME. Ask the border patrol, they deal with women constantly that are in their third trimester, and who admit they waited to cross for the very purpose of birthright citizenship. It's an archaic law, and only liberals and Mexicans are against repealing it, as everyone with common sense knows that the 14th ammendment is being abused. Which are you? Liberal open borders type, or Mexican surname?

The real issue is, why are people in Mexico making more kids, when there are no jobs for them?

Jason, what other parts of the Constitution would you like to drop? Maybe the whole thing? Are you some traitor or anarchist?

Why do poor white trash (any race at poverty level) make so many kids when there isn't enough income to support them? Are you thick? Do you really want the answer? Because poor people can't afford entertainment the way you or I could. Pillow talk is cheap.

Kind of negates the arguement of Oklahoma being a backward state when 30 other states have already made english the official language. Massachusetts was the first back in 1975 and they are hardly a "redneck, southern state" as most of the pro-illegal traitors try to paint anyone that disagrees with their insane policies.

Millions of dollars have been spend to accommodate those who don’t speak the language. They are the ones who what to live in our country and reap its benefits. Yet despite all the time effort and money we have spent to facilitate immigrants in our country, many find they can’t be troubled enough to become a citizen. It isn’t asking too much

Of course English is Oklahoma's official language. Everything is in English first, by sanction and practice. We could have two or more official languages. Official simply means it is done by official authority.

Massachusetts law requires a person to be able to read the Constitution and write his/her name in English in order to be eligible to hold a state office. How far are Okies trying to go with English as official language in Oklahoma? Denial of due process if the applicant can't read or speak English? Arbitrary execution of those who don't understand English? How far?

#17 - English is currently NOT the official state language; hence the call for the bill, Also, your argument is clearly flawed. Part of the criteria for someone to be a LEGAL immigrant is command of the English language. Therefor, if a person cannot read street signs, ballots, voter registration apps. etc. , then obviously they are most likely NOT legal and so should NOT be afforded any taxpayer-funded assistance. Seems fairly logical to me.

From the accompanying pic, Cargill looks like a fairly young guy. For those of us who have been around a while longer and watched through the years as our state and country has become more and more hispanisized, while the powers- that-be turned a blind eye in favor of "business" and foreign interests above those of ordinary American workers and taxpayers, Cargill's plea for calming the rhetoric shows a lack of understanding. Desperate times call for strong actions and we have sat back and waited and waited for years for SOMEONE in our state or national government to recognize what has happened with the invasion of America and start doing something about it. Finally we had this recognition in the form of HB1804 and we sure won't sit back and see it watered down into meaninglessness. Let's see, won't be long till Orta's press conference. Better get ready and get downtown.

To the anti-illegal conservatives. Watch how you have been manipulated. They gave you the 1804, but put a delay on the effective date beyond an election cycle. Now you are fired up. As soon as you are done voting for your heroes, they will pull any enforcement provisions because the Oklahoma Republican business lobby. So go ahead, be sheep - again (remember the gay marriage amendment?) Oklahoma used to be Democrat at its core - supporting the working man and staying out of the fray with abortion and gun issues. But the Republicans have found issues to excite you into voting against your interests. You will vote Republican and then they will take away your jury trial rights so you cannot recover against a business, undermine your labor unions, and then still give your job to an illegal by diluting this populist law. Sad, but true.

One more thing in response to #21, some of us do not identify ourselves with Democrat or Republican labels, as these parties now represent the same thing - sellout of America. They and the media keep the political process so buttoned up that we have no alternative but to work within that framework. The only label I will accept for myself is concerned, patriotic American who will fight to keep our language, culture, and heritage for my grandchildren.

Illegal immigration is like a home that has been neglected, weeds overgrown, trash overflowing. It's a dirty job to clean it up, but needs to be done before the place falls completely apart. Clean up the trash (illegals) and mow the brush and weeds (illegals) and take them to the dump (mexico)....
